My desktop and laptop are 1080p. Thing is, most phones that come with 1080p right now tend to have an SoC that can't reliably deliver a smooth experience at that resolution. The phones that can handle it end up getting cranked up to 1440p and higher, as if I really need a resolution that high on a screen that small. I'm happy with 720p on my M4 Aqua, just as I was happy on an iPhone 5c which despite being lower resolution has vastly higher pixel density anyway.
And Android without root is pretty damn restrictive, just like iOS.

I can extract a zip file full of mixed work documents like .docx, .xlsx, and .pdfs and organize them like I would on any sane PC. On iOS I have a heck of a time just extracting the zip, and after that even opening the other files becomes a whole new headache. Organizing them at all is straight up impossible. I personally went for the SE, and I had the z5 compact in mind as well. Ultimately, I wanted to try out iOS after having had a Note 2 for years. I've also heard the compact has build quality issues, with reports of cracking screens literally for no reason. Design also played a factor - I simply dislike the compact look. Not the only factor for me, but it was close enough for me to err on the side of the SE.

I want a small phone that does all the usual smartphone tasks perfectly, has no bloat and get's updates on time. There are no decent small alternatives (Xperia series is a quality nightmare) and even if you buy a phablet, the performance problems remain because every single Android handset uses cheap ass NAND and the software is an unoptimized mess.
Oh and it looks damn nice, the only phone that comes close at design is S7 Edge but paying more and finding a custom ROM that isn't shit is way too much trouble.

I've only ever owned Nexus Androids (I have owned iphones). No reason to switch to another Android, because you are right, a lot of 3rd party phones have big issues.
However, Nexus does not. If the software on my phone is by Google, I might as well buy the phone they test the software on, help make, and use to show off new Android features.
