Lots of development applications & tools like Ruby, MySql, MongoDB, etc run exceptionally well on Linux but somewhat crappy on Windows. The Windows 10 Ubuntu thing bridges the gap for Windows. The Linux community gains exposure from this.
Someone who dual boots will now stop booting into Linux and do everything in Windows 10 Ubuntu, devs will prefer to develop on Windows 10 Ubuntu and these new tools allow them to. Devs won't have to reboot in order to use Adobe Photoshop or play BF4
Who is this semen demon?
I agree. Quite literally the only reason why I installed Ubuntu as dual boot was because of the native Bash shell. This is a complete game changer for Windows. At this point there isn't a single good reason to go to Mac or Linux.
>>53868274
Linux users are still angry for some reason.
>>53868274
Why don't they start from scratch and base their operating system on the Linux kernel?
It just seems like a half-done job...
>>53868323
That would be dumb. They already have the Linux kernel running on top of their OS which already supports thousands of better applications than Linux
>>53867936
Embrace.
Extend.
Extinguish.
Although, this time maybe it will just move devs over to Ubuntu since they can play around with even more tools that aren't available on Windows.

Cause Linux users know it is over if Windows seriously focus on their development. A multibillion dollar company is going to win against a bunch of neckbeards who bicker over the most mundane shit ever all the time. It could actually wipe the linux scene out entirely.
Also it is a bit ironic that Linux was started as a free alternative to windows. I mean, it kinda defeats the whole purpose.
They are more scared than angry.
>>53868371
This is basically reverse WINE.
It's a compatibility layer that translates Linux APIs into Windows APIs.

>is going to switch to Windows because of command line implementation
Are you mentally retarded OP?
Those who dual-boot Linux and Windows, they do Windows 7, for gayman and adobe only.
Windows 10 is irrelevant in terms of gayman, and irrelevant in terms of adobe.
You have no convincing argument anon.
>>53868323
It is funny you think that they are trying to promote linux. They are trying to kill it along with the scene, they want to be the only alternative os.

Bash isn't a good enough reason to suffer windows.
Neither is photoshop for that matter.

I'm neither. I dont plan on using windows 10 and I don't know a single person who was swayed by this. I find it funny that they're doing this because it speaks to their desperation(? Or more like effort or output) to get EVERYONE on earth to use w10, which I just plain refuse to do. It literally means no nevermind to me that they have enabled bash.

Please tell me which OS is the most popular if you count the number of running kernels right now. I can be confident when I say that the "Linux scene" is not going to disappear when Microsoft integrates a couple of syscalls on their bloated desktop OS.

Have you even looked at how this works?
They are not "running the Linux kernel on top of their OS". It's still the NT kernel, it's a subsystem within the kernel that translates syscalls from the Ubuntu Userspace into the NT kernel. It's Ubuntu without the Linux kernel.

This is barely relevant to most people who use Linux for desktop. Most desktop users just like the freedom and customization, not bash. If they work on this more though, it's going to destroy the Linux server world which is scary as fuck.

GNU was started as a free as in freedom alternative to UNIX before windows even was a thing. Linux was started as a hobby kernel.

The only reason to put up with Mac is for apple's god-tier hardware. Otherwise the Mac workflow doesn't hold a candle to Windows or Unity desktop.

So, what's the use, really? If it's only for bash and POSIX, they're already ported on Windows. At this point, the Linux subsystem is pretty much a toy. The main incitive for using such and such program on Linux is not the programs themselves, which are all ported to Windows pretty much, but the Linux kernel and its underlying architecture, without depending on Windows licences. Microsoft misses the point completely here.

I thought people dual-booted because Windows provided more games... ;)
Microsoft literally let Ubuntu step on their turf, and by doing so admitted it isn't good enough on its own for developers. They practically admitted powershell was just a power lel. If they are trying to do their old "embrace, extend, and extinguish" trick, I'm anxious to see how exactly they plan to extend Linux features. I don't think it could work.
The truth is, free software is developing faster than Windows, from early 90's it's had some features Windows is only now half-assedly implementing, it's free (in both senses) and standardized which means it can be used wherever and whenever by whomever. Microsoft is just trying to keep up in this age of servers and clients.
The only thing they can do is make Windows more Linux-friendly and hope developers stick to their paid bloated spyware OS instead of going full Linux.
UBUNTU WON
>>53869356
This but Linux as a whole pretty much. What was Linus' quote "If Microsoft ever does applications for Linux it means I've won."
While not quite what he meant, it does mean that Microsoft concedes that Linux has superior tools for development.
>>53887195
He was right though.
>>53877669
So the fact you still can't modify the base kernel is something server admins think is a good thing. The whole reason to run Linux on a server is just for bash?
