Actually they are. Because android is open source if there were backdoors people would have already found them and made noise about them.
You're also right, most android phones are not encrypted but this is done for better performance which most people appreciate.
But once encrypted and google removed as a phone admin, an android phone with a long complex password is impossible to hack. Meanwhile iPhones have backdoors which can be accessed by governments and hackers who know about the backdoor.
