Egypt just blocked Facebook's Free Basics service because Facebook wouldn't let them spy on its users.
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-facebook-egypt-idUSKCN0WY3JZ

>Free Basics, launched in Egypt in October, is aimed at low-income customers, allowing anyone with a cheap computer or smartphone to create a Facebook account and access a limited set of Internet services at no charge.

>Two sources with direct knowledge of discussions between Facebook and the Egyptian government said Free Basics was blocked because the company would not allow the government to circumvent the service's security to conduct surveillance. They declined to say exactly what type of access the government had demanded or what practices it wanted Facebook to change.

>Facebook said more than 3 million Egyptians used the service before it was suspended, and 1 million of them had never had Internet access. The main Facebook site and app are still available in Egypt, which has a population of about 90 million.

Discuss.

Knowing Egypt gov it was bound to happen. But free basic it's far from ideal. Although it can give access to poor people to more information in the long run they'll lose.

>in the long run they'll lose
Why?
>>
This just shows that the Egyptian government is as fucking mentally retarded as its people.
Facebook only cooperates with corporations.
If you are a government, of course you will get denied.
That's why a government gets a privately run company, such as an ad company which Facebook will gladly serve, to serve as a mediator for the government.
Dumb fucks.
>>
>>53859233
But they are cheap so they want direct access without paying
>>
All egypt had to do is pay for the information on the users
>>
You know you got a shit govt when it's willing to give you free internet to spy on you lmao
>>
Still terminally spooked after the western backed Arab Spring I see.
>>
>>53859350
>western backed
>imblying that egyptians are or were content with the government
>>
>>53859384
Being content doesn't equal to a push being possible.
Most of the world is not content, on an equal margin as Egyptians before the Spring. Even more so USA.
Why isn't the whole world descending into chaos then?
>>
>>53859384
They weren't. But that doesn't mean that the West didn't help push it. I dare say that the CIA was on the phone with twitter the whole time to set the hashtags just right.
>>
>>53859384
Ukrainians also weren't content in the early 2000s, when it turned up proven in the past year, that USA was dumping millions in support of uprising and destabilization.
The current leader of the democratic movement is even on the list of the corrupt hoarders that was released in the past few days.
Meanwhile USA pretty much funded ISIS/ISIL in Syria, and the forces in Libya too via France in addition.
If you think Egypt wasn't influenced the same way, you are sorely retarded.

Zuckerberg pls frick off

If only they'd ban social media outright, then I might consider moving there.

Well, probably not, but it'd still be a nice place.
>>
Why is /g/ not interested in this? For all the shit you give Google and Facebook (and the NSA, and they at least ostensibly only target criminals) over privacy concerns it'd seem like you'd care about a government spying on all its Facebook users.
>>
Fuck facebook and fuck its userbase. Why should I care ?
>>
>>53860216
1. Only faggots use Facebook
2. Facebooks already sells out to ad companies
3. It was already confirmed Facebooks saves drafts of replies users type out, before they are even posted, including the portions that are erased as they are being written.

So none of this is surprising.
The only reason most people here would give a fuck would be if they were as retarded as yourself over being in awe of finding out that the Sun is made out of nuclear explosions and not cheese.
>>
>>53858177
/g/ doesn't care if fecesbook was blocked worldwide, why would it being blocked on some shithole country be any different?
>fuck off shill
>>
Facebook is doing such illegal invasive shit and nobody cares. I don't know why.
>>
>>53859420
Actually it's the NSA, they got a program to influence on social media for political interests and you can bet twitter and fb are in on it.
It's not really that hard to have thousands of human-like bots posting and reposting crap on twitter, many advertisement companies already do it.
>>
>>53858177
>Facebook wouldn't let them spy on its users.
Yea because it's a real pain in the butt when someone else is trying to spy on the people you are already spying on.

There won't be incentive for real, cheap, "full" Internet to come along. Free Basics is basically undercutting ISPs out of business. Also it's the Internet according to FB with websites and content that only it approves. It's the literal opposite of Net Neutrality.

That's why it got kicked out of India before it launched because of massive public opposition. At least the Pajeets get their tech right.

There is a reason why freebasics is free, and a reason why doesn't offer the internet but instead only a few major companies sites.

Those people are better off, there are many ways to find people giving out free dial up. It may be slower but at least you actually can view the internet as opposed to a marketing walled garden.

And it's pretty obvious why Shekelberg is doing this. Once you have monopoly over a country's Internet you can start charging websites that want to be served through that internet. Fuck that shit.
>>
>>53859058
Facebook is in charge of the info a big percentage of the population is consuming.
Also will probably increase the price of normal internet so most poor ppl will be stuck with free basics and will think Facebook = internet.
You can also add imperialism, but idk. Poor countries need to be careful because the need for inversions can push them into real bad deals.
