Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Well shit I erased the wrong post!

Here's what I wrote:

Just got a free x201 from a buddy. Catch is the back light is fucked. I can see the Thinkpad logo at startup when I pass a flashlight over it, but unless I'm running in safe mode, I can't see anything from the login screen onward. I took it apart and stuck an ohmmeter to the F1 (back light) fuse and it seems to be fine (getting a resistance ). The inverter also seem to be in good shape. Any thoughts?
>>
>>53858396
I haven't tried that, will do. Would any monitor work? I only have an old inspiron 1525 and x1 carbon to work with. I should also add that, when connected to a VGA cable, the x201 can't detect it's own screen

gaiz, i have a T430s that has Mini DP (but no Thunderbolt) (it's the i5 Intel iGPU model). i want to hook the laptop up to a TV I have so I bought this cable:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00YONKZ72/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d1_i1?pf_rd_m=AN1VRQENFRJN5&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1Y0GZZVARSXV8B8FSG5Q&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=302362649&pf_rd_i=desktop

Windows 10 x64 recognises the TV and will let me change resolution etc. but nothing is showing up on the TV

Someone told me I need a Mini DP to HDMI adapter that is ACTIVE, and then use a normal HDMI<->HDMI cable. I'm confused cos Windows seems to recognise the TV

What you think?

So I'm getting a X220t for $500.
It has:
IPS display in 1366x768
250gb mSATA SSD
8GB of ram
Intel Core i7 2640m 2.8ghz
And the Bios is already unlocked by the user and it comes with Windows 10 and Office pre-installed. Which I may play around, but would just turn it into a Debian/Arch portable machine.
>>
>>53858535
If you do both ways, you should be able to find out the source of your problems. Inspiron 1525 is fine to work with.
>>
>>53858608
Also is it worth modding this display to a FHD format? Although I see more mods for the non-tablet version of this. Which is making me question if the digitizer/screen is even moddable. I'm also considering getting the 6 Cell Splice Battery for it.
>>
I just replaced the display on my X220 with an IPS one, should have done that long ago, now i like it even more than my X220T

Unfortunately the only thing you can do is replace the keyboard to get it looking tip top, and then keep those hands clean, as well as wiping the keyboard with a microfiber cloth after every session to keep the grease off, and preserve it. that's what I do, and my keyboard looks pretty decent.
>>
>>53859330
It's just normal wear.. Preventing it will cost you more than just replacing the keyboard when it gets all too ugly..

I consider buying a T420.

my shop offers the following screen resolutions for the T420:

- TFT 1366x768 Pixel LED
- TFT 1600x900 Pixel
- 1600x900 LCD LED
(copy & pasted)

What are the differences? Should I get 1366x768 or 1600x900?

All I plan on doing with it is programming.

If you want CAD, light gaming (wow, lol) and performance in PS pick the nvidia one.

Afaik there is only one 900p screen and is shitty tho. But fairly superior to the 798p meme.

Is the main difference between T4xx and T5xx series the size of the screen ? T4xx have 14inches or something like that, while T5xx have the more standard 15.6 and similar size screens
I would assume the 5 hundred series is also a little bit more powerful ?
>>

Posted in the previous thread, would like some more opinions:

My budget is £350 tops. I'd like to get one from somewhere like Amazon, certified refurbished, rather than second hand from some random seller.

I was looking at the T420, and everything about it is perfect, except I really would like a better screen as I'm quite used to my 144Hz BenQ one and too much of a step down would probably annoy me, so I don't think the T420 is an option any more.

My girlfriend has a Lenovo with the same type of chiclet keyboard as the newer models (she has a G500), and I like how it types, so the newer vs. older keyboards isn't too much of an issue for me (I don't think I'll be particularly bothered by the function row of keys), but obviously I would agree that the older ones are better.

I'd also like one with an SSD, and preferably 8GB RAM, but 4GB is fine I suppose as long as I can upgrade it easily enough.

So long story short:
1) Budget of £350
2) I don't mind the newer chiclet keys
3) I want a screen that isn't terrible
4) SSD is preferable, and preferably 8GB RAM but wouldn't mind 4GB.

What would you recommend? Currently been looking at these two:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T520-Laptop-Notebook/dp/B00UHY0ZO0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1PE185HUIC6C4

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-ThinkPad-i5-3320M-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B01C6WNEL6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A1CSPH6UNIUWE0

Cheers :)

>ThinkPad

>>
>>53867155
OK, i see your point.

In that case:
1) Definitely a thinkpad
2) Budget is definitely £350 tops
3) The best screen I can get given that ^ I'm not expecting it to be "good", but are there options that are better than the T420 screen that also fit my other criteria? I've heard the T420's screen in particular is notoriously bad with the anti-glare matte stuff

I'm not sure. Last time I checked the T400 line was compatible when not using quadcore processor. But some displays were not working and something about virtualization? Since I have to solder something apearently I'm going to wait until someone tells me it's totally working and not going to wreck my shit.

I got a T500 and the "v" key on the keyboard is a bit dodgy. I never noticed a problem until I had an occasion to try and type softly to be quiet - the key works fine when I type normally, but type softly and sometimes it won't trigger.

What is that? Dirty contact under the key or something? Can I take the cap off and clean it?

Get your finger nail under the top right or left corner and pop it off. And stop hot gluing the keyboard, it isnt healthy.

Quick followup question for what I'm gonna be getting and using soon

With an eGPU, do the video out ports from the laptop still work? I would have thought not.
My X220 model is only capable of up to 2 screens at once, but I know some iGPU models can display 3 screens at once.
With an eGPU, will the CPU limit me to a max of 2 screens, or can I display 3 or even 4 screens?
