I have this Weller station.
I would highly recommend an adjustable station over anything that plugs directly into the wall. It's much more manageable and versatile.
>>
>>53853849
a multi-station that includes hot air (rework) and a CV CC power supply.
>>
Yes, I do.
It's whatever they had at Radio Shack when I needed it; good enough for the 2-4 soldering projects per year I have.
>>
I've got a cheap ass chinese station from ebay as well as a Hakko FR-300.
>>
>>53853876
This

That said, I bought s shitty Chinese iron first time and it couldn't even melt the flu. Replaced it for 20 bucks

I have a cheap no-name station I bought from Amazon.

But I recently bought a wireless Hakko and it is fantastic. Heats way faster than the station. Devours batteries though.

Yes, plus a couple of different iron tips (but I'm partial to the flat one because pic related) and also a hot air station.

I'm pretty sure that's a scoop tip

I have a question related to soldering, I fucking suck at this

Soldering and the solder sticks to the iron rather than the piece I'm soldering, I know I'm doing something fucking stupid wrong but I can't figure it out

Also my hand shakes like a motherfucker, how do I get surgeon hands?

Solder iron is a station but isn't adjustable, just on/off, solder is 60/40 rosin core
>>
>>53854568

Probably not warm enough.

My wireless does that when low on batteries.
>>
I have the good ol' >$10 RadioShack special. It get's the job done for every project I've tackled.
>>
hakko 888 or whatever it's called
i should've just bought a chinese knockoff

I have a crappy $10 one at home that I use if I'm impatient. Otherwise I use the sexy Wellers we have in the university labs where I work. Really nice. Heats up in seconds.
>>
>>53853849

Hakko 888D, worth every penny

1. apply flux liberally. use gel/paste flux. use leaded solder. clean your tips before use. use a nice, temperature-controlled soldering iron. use good tips (I like hakko chisel tips).

2. Rest the palm of your hand and your arm on the desk/work surface when soldering. Put the workpiece in a vise or clamp of some sort so it doesn't vibrate or move around on you.
>>
>>53854568
You probably aren't heating the component and board enough.

For shaky hands, you kind of find good ways to keep pressure on the joint as you get experience so that you aren't really freestyling. Just keep practicing, my hands are shaky as hell too. Sometimes a beer or two helps.
>>
Hakko 936, probably the best money spent on a tool.
The clones are good for the price if you are on a budget.

Makes sense, the one I've got is a bit of a shitter, I've been told adjustable is really the best type to have

Luckily mine was like 20 bucks from radio shack and easily replaced
>>
>>53854800

The wireless Hakko I got was $20 and is even better than my cheap adjustable temp station.

Only problem is lack of tips, but I can use the station for big projects.
>>
Some cheap shit I bought from a surplus store for $3. I don't know how, but the tip somehow developed a little scooped out gouge.

I use it maybe once a year, so it hasn't been a big issue. One of these days I'll actually have to look for a replacement.

Got a hakko 508 from Fry's. I melted the metal contacts in my headphones right off, destroying them for good.

Also, the outer metal part turned all brown/black the first time I used it.

I am not good at soldering.
>>
>>53855629
The outside discoloring isn't much of an issue as long as you managed to tin the tip and keep it clean. The tip is all that really matters because it's where you are trying to make good contact to transfer heat.
>>
>>53853849
I have a soldering gun, I should get an iron though

this one, generic russian-esque light-dimmer-as-a-temperature-regulation $10 station. But i don't really care about its cheapness, i was soldering small things (like microusb ports) with this thing and it's more than enough for my needs.

A cheapo Radio Shack/hardware store one my dad bought me when his got too old to melt anything anymore. I still have his dead one, and wedge it in the stove burner to heat it when I misace my own.

In a manner of speaking.
>>
>>53854568
Breathe in and out. Breathe in before you solder. Start soldering as you slowly release your breath. Breathe in slowly. Lather, rinse, repeat. Be confident in yourself. Buy some quick projects from radio shack or a hardware store to improve yourself. They don't send doctors into neurosurgery the first time, they'd get them to practice on dummies/duplicates a lot before they get anywhere near the real thing.
>>
>>53856950
so for quick solder projects what am I looking for?

Like LEDs and a board to put stuff on? Any specific names of the stuff, I have a radio shack right down the road
>>
>>53857154
Something like these will do. They should sell them (aussie site because aussie). Don't worry, it gives you an instruction manual to learn from. You get to learn more about electronics and get hands on experience. All the parts in the image and you just solder them onto the board. Very invaluable.

Dick Smith soldering station.
>I remember the days when Dick Smith was good and not bankrupt.

For the Americans here, Dick Smith Electronics was essentially the local Radioshack clone, and once Tandy/Radioshack expanded to Australia (branded as Tandy Electronics) and then went broke, they even actually owned Tandy Australia.

And their fall from grace was EXACTLY the fucking same.
Apparently no one will learn.
>>
>>53857304
Do they still sell them? I might see if they got a good deal before they sell everything.
>>
>>53857326
Looks like the quit the last of them in 2014, online only back then (so the stores probably actually stopped stocking them in ~2012)

It's not even the website any more though.

Who knows though, maybe a local store might still have one.
Went to my local DSE a few days ago to check out the sales (which are pathetic) to find they still had a fair supply of iPhone 3G/3GS cases...
>>
>>53857304
As a 22 year old New Zealander, Dicksmith has sold over priced junk as long as I can remember. Went to see their closing down sale and they're still selling HDMI cables for $50.

I have one pretty similar to this, it's a Weller but it's not blue like that one. I only use it for basic automotive wiring shit, not any fine electronics work, so it's more than adequate.
>>
some cheap 60W I bought for about $10

works well, since I only solder wires
>>
Hakko 936
Whatever you buy, just make sure it's a hakko

I got an hakko 936 chink clone for 15$ from hobbyking. Works bretty gud for my occasional soldering.

>>
Cheap as fuck 30W one. Bought it for like 5€, and used it 2 times to solder a jack to my AKG K701 wire.

I learned with that experience that I'm terrible at soldering and that I shouldn't ever try to do it if I can't try multiple times.
>>
Would call mine a heat producing resistor
>>
Yihua 936 + real hakko tips, it's done everything I have asked of it so far.

i just replaced my chinese soldering station with a hakko fx600 and it's so much faster at heating up and heat distribution
