Software? Yeah obviously you're an idiot if you don't install security patches.

Hardware? Veeery unlikely. Maybe for out of commission routers and stuff. I know some early generation Intel Core CPU's are vulnerable to a specific attack that can run OS independent (e.g. survive a reinstall) but even that can be patched via the BIOS

What makes you think updates protect you from this shit? All the hotfixes in the world aren't going to stop some dipshit from outright authorizing the owning of his system.

>exploits
Maybe if you're running an outward-facing service on an old software platform like a web server, in which you will surely be hit with attacks from automated bots. If you're just a home user surfing a few trusted sites on an older system with no open ports? Less likely. I've never had a single problem with any unsupported systems I've used for such a role, nor have I really seen anyone else who has.

But obviously, in the face of a motivated individual, these systems will be swiss cheese, but so would many up-to-date systems as well. Proper security isn't a matter of updates alone.

My Razr V3 died two days ago on Saturday.

I flipped it open and it was a bit stuck. I tried closing and re-opening a few times but it kept getting stuck less than halfway open.
I used some force and heard a snap, the screen and speaker are now RIP.

Replacing with a 5x and google fi - is there any easy way to get all of the data off of my old phone?

Thinking of just throwing NetBSD on it and using it as an easy SSH/Telnet gateway for shitboxes.
>>
>>53856899
If I recall, the indigo2 requires irix 6.5.22 to run modern firefox for TLS to support shitposting, but I don't have it installed. ( which won't work on an indigo2 but indigo2s are nice for irc / RasMol )

idk i'd help you fix your shit if you lived near me (773) but you probably don't.

This glorious fucking bastard.
Had it about a month, just bought a second one from the same seller (same pics, hope he actually had another and didn't accidentally post the same auction twice)
It benchmarks worse than a 2012 phone but it's just so fucking nice.
No EFI bullshit, 1000m ethernet, handles stripped debian like a dream. It's the perfect storage/everything box.
Sure it takes 5x as long to run shit in ffmpeg as my laptop, but it's the perfect mix of size, power efficiency and utility.
Fuck a $400AUD nuc when I can get this qt for $60.
They just look so nice. Using it for basically everything my mac mini did.
Also, lumia 530. Had a razr i but the amoled fucked itself and my friend said he didn't want me not being contactable for a week while I got a new screen, so he dragged me down to dick smith and bought this fucker. The only change I'd consider would be going to a 620 when this thing's dead beyond recovery, but I have a spare with a fried mobo so fuck it. Bought a zenfone 2 for VR and deving shit, but I wouldn't use it as a daily driver.

Also 2010 mac mini, sure it's kinda young (Fuck, 6 years ain't all that young when I think about it), but why bother upgrading, especially with the little 500 geek bench fucker in pic related?
I don't think I'll upgrade much of anything I have for 5 or so years, I just don't need to (even though some stuff's a bit young now, it sure as fuck won't be when I replace it)

Also 160gb iPod classic/4GB mini (Depending on my mood).
Not gonna lie, I have a 7th gen nano, but it was $30 on eBay so fuck it.

It's funny, for the last christmas and birthday I've been through I didn't want anything. I am utterly happy with what I have, and that feels better than any purchase I've ever made, because it always stays with me.

I barely play games anymore and I give no fucks about new releases.
I don't hoard much data so 1TB is more than enough.

-Galaxy S2 - rooted, debloated. Stock ROM, works fine.
-Compaq SR1920nx - Domain controller and file server at work running Server 2003. Set it up in like 2005, and still works fine.
-Compaq SR1720nx - Running Ubuntu server for a company intranet. Serves a single page for centralization of company credentials. This ones power supply did catch fire at one point, and take out a hdd. I was able to clean up the connector and the hdd is still usable, but I probably wouldn't.
-Dell inspiron laptop - I forget which model, but it is a P4, and works fine with any linux distro for networking things.
-A pair of Radeon HD 6970 - One is in my music production / gaming machine, and runs STALKER just fine. The other one is in my work computer just chilling.

I just don't see the point in chasing after new tech these days.

it would be perfect if not for the fact that some options are limited if you don't have the bis
bis was already almost useless in 2011 with ever cheapening mobile data and it's obsolete now but instead of adding a patch that would make it optional bb still keeps some features locked behind it
the hardware is godly though

I also have a laptop from around the same time, maybe a year or so older, that's pretty fuckin decent. Picked it up for $500 at costco and it was running a radeon hd 6650m (equivalent to a 6550 iirc). Using Xperia Arc S. I guess, it should count, since I'm probably not moving from it any time soon. It still holds up pretty well, and it is a pretty old phone.
Honestly, it got a lot better once I installed CM on it. The default ROM was kinda garbage, no internal memory to speak of limited me a lot (which is fixed by Marshmallow and also by custom LegacyXperia Lollipop that allow to use SD Card as /data partition), the battery life was horrendous (it isn't now that I actually changed my governor), and it certainly was a lot slower than this supposedly heavier version (probably something to do with Dalvik/ART).
Well, OK, Lollipop was sometimes kinda slow too, but Marshmallow is just perfect.
I have no idea why I even riced it, honestly. I only use it for calls and as a portable map. Rarely, as an MP3 player. But it is a lot better that way.

Wanted to brag for a second about the best computer I've bought in terms of value and performance and hopefully help someone out who wants a top-tier 'cheap' laptop that's very capable of gaming.

Got this mint Dell Precision M6600 for $460 shipped last summer when I didn't have room for a desk and it's been really fucking awesome. Came with a Sandy Bridge i7, 1080p (FHD) excellent display, upgraded Firepro M6100 graphics from a newer Precision 6800, 8GB of RAM, etc.

Processor is several generations old now but still very fast even at 'only' 3.4ghz and it feels every bit as fast as my new desktop, especially with the Cruicial MX100 in it. I couldn't recommend it more highly if you want a nice 1080 laptop with a quick processor and relatively high-end graphics for sub-$500.

>fans are dead silent even when gaming/stress testing for long periods
>Firepro M6100 graphics are slightly faster than 960m, 770m, AMD M385x, AMD 7970m and on-par with Desktop 7870
>runs modern games at 1080 with good settings
>temps never get above 68c GPU and 70c CPU even with overclocked GPU and aforementioned silent fans
>reasonable portability for a powerful 17" laptop with build quality, hardware and design that shames a Thinkpad

Seriously, if you were struggling to find a gaming-capable 1080p laptop for reasonable money this is a steal, and the Sandy Bridge i7 surprised even me with how well it's held up. Exceptional piece of hardware and probably best value I've ever bought electronics-wise.

Can you flash Ubuntu Touch on it?
>>
>>53879684
Why wouldn't you upgrade to something like a Q10 or Classic?

All I need a phone for is a basic calendar, texting, and notes. I can do that on literally anything. This was the absolute cheapest option. Next time my phone breaks, if I can't get anything locally with a nice keyboard, I will probably get something very similar online.
>>
>>53879835
Well yes you can do that on anything, but why restrict yourself to shit just because you can use that shit?

Usually the antennas are standard and the wifi chip just goes in the minipcie port.

I think that antennas for 802.11n and 802.11ac standard are different.

Enjoy your stage fright.

Because I got it locally. It took me 30 minutes to get a replacement.
>>

They look the same to me. Here is the first AC card I found:

http://www.amazon.com/Bplus-7260-HMWG-Wireless-AC-Bluetooth-HMCPartner/dp/B00HJCBV64/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459867910&sr=8-2&keywords=laptop+wifi+ac+pci

I don;t see why they would change the standard. Unless you need more antennas than you have. Open it up and count the antennas, sometimes there are extras for upgrades.

And? That makes sense for a temporary replacement but not a permanent one

I still use Paint Shop Pro 8 for all my photo editing needs

I think it was released in 2003, still works wonders
>>
>>53880026
But other phones would be functionally the same for my purposes.

since you guys are pros in old shit, i'm looking to buy a previous generation laptop for everyday use.
i need the laptop to prioritize the GPU over the CPU, to have 6GB of memory or more and for it to not be power hungry. any recommendations?
>>
>>53852450
can 2005 call you on that and ask for it back
>>

>Dedicated gpu
>not power hungry
Pick one. There was a lenovo that kept being shilled that was actually quite good that fits your bill. Cant remember the model. Also maybe a used RoG asus laptop.

I still want to try if I could live with my Pentium III 800Mhz build from 16 years ago.

Good point. I bought a GT 720 low profile card for my refurb thinkcentre and it runs just about anything but super modern AAA trash I don't care about anyway.

How did I not know about this? I only really hear about Thinkpads here and afaik none of them have good graphics or 17" screens. Will check out ebay

Cameras are more /p/ than /g/ related but it is a digital one.
Got her about 3 years ago from a war journalist. She was already pretty beat up and her shutter count was on the high side of 400K. Dragged her through snow, mud, rain and literally fire that one time. She never gave me any problems. Shutter count is about 750K now and everything is working like the day she left the factory in Japan. I'll keep her for the rest of my life even if I stop using her as my main camera.

I still use my nokia from early 2000 as my backup phone in my backback.

Oh and i use old mp3 from 1999 or 2000. It cost over 400 back them and it still works like a new.
