if you're trying to build a dead silent, 100% passive, no-moving parts machine, then yes

else no

Added my afterburner profile
>>
>>53847422
Fanless PSUs don't come in ratings much higher than 550 watts, and they're expensive (~$200 for some of them). It is because of those heat reasons. Both all the extra heatsinking, and because it needs higher-rated components (normal electronics are only rated to 85C)

You also need big heavy heatsinks on the CPU and (if present) GPU that are specially designed for no-fans work. Plenty of "passive" sinks don't have a fan on them themselves but implicitly assume that there is one in the case somewhere. You also need to think about putting some beefed-up chipset/mosfet cooling on the motherboard, since it assumes it'll have airflow.

The case has to work with you on all this and provide for it. It's easier now that top and bottom vents are common though, since your airflow is gonna be all convection, which is a bottom-to-top pattern.

oh yeah and if the point of all this is absolute silence you have to make sure you don't manage to put something with coil whine in it.

Overall it's a expensive, a lot of work and the poor ability of convection alone to dump heat sharply limits how powerful the machine can be. but if you want 100% suitable-for-a-studio dead fucking silent, it's what you gotta do.

should i return my SSF case so that i can go mATX/ATX and grab a x99 motherboard?

was really hoping to stick to the SSF but i don't think i can adequately cool a 5820k in the case since it won't fit a radiator and the cooler height restriction is pretty bad.

I was having an issue where my two 1tb mechanical drives kept disappearing from both windows and Linux. Was driving me insane! Finally figured it out. The molex to dual sata power adapter was shit and was dying. It would work intermittently. Nothing is more infuriating than being unable to replicate a problem to troubleshoot.

My 1tb drives are now humming along happily in a striped array and giving sustained 430MB/s write speeds for work space.
>>
>>53847707
you aren't living in a capsule hotel in Tokyo, anon. An ATX midtower will make your life a lot easier with that CPU
>>
>>53847707
Depends on your use case. Do you actually need the 12 threads of a 5820k and quad channel memory that x99 would provide?

I'm not shilling for skylake, but if you're just gaming with occasional VM or encoding usage, just get the 6700k. Less thread sure, but runs cooler than the 5820k allowing for lower and smaller coolers which would fit in your case.
>>
>>53847760
I was about to yell at you for being wrong but then I looked it up and apparently they put vt-x in K chips now. huh.
>>
>>53847760
that's the thing though, i can go either 5820k or 6700k for roughly the same price, and i don't see any real edge that the 6700k has over 5820k other than allowing me to stick with SSF.
>>
>>53848207
Are you playing gaymes or what? The 6700k kicks the 5820k with gaymes
>>
>>53848207
Yea but it also comes down to overall price to performance. A z170 motherboard is usually cheaper than even the bargain bin x99 stuff. And a 6700k overclocked to say 4.5ghz will run a helluva lot cooler than a 5820k at the same speed because keep in mind the 5820k comes out of the box at 3.2ghz I think compared to the 4.0+GHz stock of the 6700k. Plus their memory controllers are different. I've seen 5820k chips that were unable to handle ddr4 over 2400mhz if you're looking to overclock the chip. Meanwhile most 6700ks I've seen will handle ddr4 at 3200mhz and then some while also clocking the chip too.

If you truly need the threads of the 5820k, go for it. If not the 6700k is the better option.

This is mine. Before anyone comments on the 980ti and 1080p, latest games at 1080p with settings maxed out (minus AA) do drop below 60 fps quite often. 980ti is definitely not an overkill for this resolution.
>>
>>53858962
Tell me you're at least utilizing that hardware for something beyond 1080p gaming that can't even hit 60fps.

My GPU died last night. I had a Gigabyte GTX 970.

Today I have the choice of buying a MSI GTX 970 or a MSI R9 390 (they're both on sale and they're both the same price).

It seems that the R9 is superior in every way, should I switch?

Great argument
That is how air pressure works, if the exhaust (140) fan is spinning faster than rad fans (120) then then air will be sucked out before touching the GPU backplate.
>>
>>53862566
Wouldn't it need to spin faster than the rad fans, and the intake fans in the front?

>>
>>53862655
>Yes ... intake fans do not matter as they are much further away and have object in their way.
How is that "Yes"? That would be "No, it doesn't need to spin faster than the rad fans, and the intake fans in the front".

Also, doesn't pressure increase because of those fans anyway, even if they're slightly further away and have a GPU slightly in front of it? It's a closed system mostly.
>>
>>53862661
Except this isn't about heat transfer or convection. It's about air pressure, something you can literally not argue about. After playing just cause 3 for an hour or so, even with my overclock that max temp is 64C.
>>
>>53862699
No there three hard drives in the way. That front area is where all the drives go. They actually obstruct the airflow a lot and I need to jerry rig a better solution. I mean "Yes" as in the exhaust matters, I should've worded it better.

Shit finally someone gets it
I thought he would realize I was fucking around at the ms paint diagram but I guess not. The reason why the fans are intake is because I do more CPU work than GPU so those temps are prioritized. Surprisingly though my GPU temps are low, fuck if I know why.
>>
>>53863007

It really has a lot to do with your standards. For me overkill means that I can easily turn the settings to max (minus performance eating ones like high levels of AA or DSR) and still have the card be constantly above 60 fps.

Let's see now. Rise of the tomb raider: with maxed out settings (aa is off) the game drops quite often below 60 fps in late soviet installation and in geothermal valley.

The Division: With almost every setting maxed out (minus the shadow that are not the nvidia exclusive ones) the game drops in the low 50s high 40s.

Assassin's creed: drops below 60 a lot whenever he pleases apparently

Witcher 3: drops to the low 50s in dense forests, like the one in white orchard.

GTA 5: drops below 60 fps too

The card has no trouble in granting an average of over 60 fps however, the card can't keep CONSTANT 60 fps in the latest games with settings maxed out (again, with no AA)

I didn't fuck anything up, that was my first thought as well and my results in firestrike, valley and heaven are perfectly in line with how my system should perform when confronted with other online results.

This whole overkill for 1080p buzzword has been thrown around ever since the release of the radeon HD5xxx series and fermi but that's not the case.

Numbers are indisputable and so far even on an oc (5820k is @ 4ghz and the 980ti is @ 1350) games at 1080p maxed out (again things like AA are off) isn't enough to keep >60 fps at all times.

Perhaps it's because games aren't optimized as they should be, perhaps is something else but, as thing stands a 980ti is definitely not an overkill for 1080p.

If games drop below 60 at 1080, 1440 would only exacerbate such a phenomenon.
>>
>>53863292
Seriously, that shit is annoying and just gets in the way. Any decent case should have mounts on the backside for SSDs and HDDs.
>>
>>53863485
Rise of the tomb raider- Never go below 60 at 1080p
The division-Never go below 50 at 1440p, I think you might have supersampling on
Assassins creed-Bad port, simple as that
Witcher 3-Never go below 60 at 1440p, turn off goyworks
GTA 5-No, even 1080p 8x msaa never drop below 60

I think you've fucked something up

CPU: Athlon II X2 220, OC'ed to 3.1 ghz from 2.8
GPU: Zotac GeForce 630GT Synergy Edition 2 GB
Mobo: MiniITX from an old eMachines 1352 (AM3) with the PCI-E 16x slot OC'ed to 2825 from 2500 mhz
RAM: 2x2gb DDR3 1600 mhz
HDD: 500 gb 2.5" WD Caviar Blue i hauled from my laptop to replace the 500gb Hitatchi 3.5" that died (laptop has a 120 gb i had laying around in it now).
DVDRW: old DVDRW MultiWriter i had laying around from the eMachine.
PSU: Kenntech 680W i had in an old Dell.
Case: Compaq Presario 6000 series ATX case.
Additional stuff: Mobo doesn't have a connector for the case fan (came from a miniTower) so i had to use a direct connection with a Molex plug i had laying around, and due to running hot from overclocking, i added two more fans as well to give additional cooling. Shit works - GPU is running about 20-30 degrees cooler, depending on what is running, never going above 60C (ran hottest around 85C), and the CPU is running around 50C with the overclock.

There are just two many options to make it worth while, certain reviewers pick and choose their comparisons and then it's up to the buyer to compare multiple reviews.

The reason that video didn't compare the 950s to a 780ti is because there's such a large age difference, not so much betwen the 970 and 780ti, and because you can interpolate the relative performance from the 970 comparison. Also the 780ti isn't available new any more and when that happens that particular card is no longer included in most reviews because the availability and price can vary a lot.
