Why does Cruise Control for Cool even exist? I mean in what scenario did computer scientists find they were holding down the shift key so often that they needed a dedicated button to lock it in place?
>>
I haven't heard that term for a decade.
>>
>tfw typewriters have caps lock
>>
>>53840850
Back when people used typewriters they used CAPITAL LETTERS to write titles since that was the only way to control the typeface. It was also easy to implement Caps Lock as a Shift-without-lock-feedback. Know your history.
>>
Full cpaital letter usage was mostly much more readable on a TTY back in the day.

Let's talk about other useless keys like Scroll Lock (used only in Excel) and Pause/Break

i'd argue that NumLock should be removed and leave the numeric pad as a numeric pad

altgr isn't really necessary either i think?
>>
Most architectural and engineering documentation relies on block caps. It's a carryover from the days of hand drafting in ink and having to maximise legibility.
>>

Pause/Break is an extremely useful key you dumbass.

>>
>>53840850
I use it when editing mp3s and what every word starting with a capital letter, say "Niggers In Paris" instead of "niggers in paris".
>>
>>53841008
Just gggUG to capitalize entire buffer.
>>
>>53840850
When you look at coding conventions of programming languages like COBOL and even modern languages like SQL that were influenced by COBOL, you can see why CAPS LOCK was useful.

Nowadays, I just map it to another Control key. It's friggin' great.
>>
>>53840945
Certain languages need Alt Gr because they have more than two variants of letters or too many letters in general.

But it's technically the same as Ctrl + Shift

But since I'm using a custom layout, I'll actually be dropping Caps Lock and replace it with something more useful.

except its not, you can only assces the tertiary function of a key with AltGr while ctrl+shift does nothing or thiggers some program specific hotkey
>>
I remapped my Caps Lock key. It now works like a smartphone shift buttons - it capitalizes a single letter and then turns off. I like it, helps the RSI. I don't have to stretch my hands goofily while holding shift.
>>
I prefer using the caps lock key twice to holding for shift
I type faster being able to tap caps lock with my 2nd finger than trying to hold my pinkie over shift or move my 2nd finger down.

Holding a key slows the entire hand down (at least for me) more than adding an extra keystroke.

There are two shift keys for a reason. Use your other hand.

Other useless keys:

/ on numpad, even though we already have it elsewhere

-Right shift - for what? probably everyone uses left shift

-clear/escape on numpad - for what purpose?

- insert - again, for what purpose in 2016? why not have an insert mode toggle from a system hotkey instead, it's not such a used function anymore

The problem with remapping Caps Lock is that on some keyboards it has a LED toggle which is a hardware function, if I'm not mistaken. So if you remap it to something like a left Enter, the LED gets toggled on everytime.

I was talking about the keyboard layout in general, not about edge cases for people who spend most of their time in the terminal. The terminal is obviously not the prevalent use for a keyboard.

Actually I'd go so far to say there should be keyboards for the general public and keyboards for different categories of niches, like programmers, gamers, typists, etc.

Then there should be a general layout for most typical uses, which doesn't have to include keys like Pause/break, insert, scroll lock, etc, which are useless for most people, but maybe are useful for some niche categories of users.

I gotta agree here, we have keyboards where you need everyone to be on board from people who only use email/facebook to programmers, people running servers etc.

But generally people probably care less about a handful of seemingly redundant keys than they would like to learn a new keyboard layout.

I did. While I appreciate the performance of mechanicals, I don't appreciate the noise they make nor the fact that the keys are quite tall, which leaves a lot of room for dirt to collect between and underneath them.

That's why I'm actually using a chiclet keyboard right now, even if the performance sucks ass, at least it's not noisy and it doesn't turn into a mess full of lint and fluff every few days. I hope one day they will build mechanicals which aren't noisy and don't have so much key travel, so dirt won't gather in those frames.

>>
>>53844510
I guess not. IDK. It works fine otherwise.

I did have to reboot my teensy though since I believe that holding both shifts and pressing one of the buttons I hit is a shortcut or something.

The original keyboard I built this one off of would only let you hit three or so keys and the mouse buttons (which were under zxc) were part of the key matrix so hitting those by resting your palm would trigger it. I was quick to cut this thing up.

I write software in C-family languages and have zero need for a numpad. In fact I've come to hate numpads because on laptops, they shift the trackpad 50,000 miles to the left which is uncomfortable as fuck and on desktops they make reaching for your pointing device a three-month pilgrimage. I can only use 60%/tenkeyless layouts now.

in mid 90's I learned foxbase+ and this text editor called 'sidekick' which runs in the background so you don't have to quit fox to edit the querys, alt+tab hides it and scroll lock moves the frame (window?) across the screen, print screen sent directly to the printer, men MSDOS 5.0 was the shiet!!
Windows 3.11 was too expesive and makes the hardware obsolete

Not that guy, but if you're running OS X then insert-based copy+paste really is unnecessary because the system-wide shortcuts of Cmd-C and Cmd-V work fine in terminals.

Alt is Opt on Macs. They're the same key.

Ctrl in caps lock position is amazing if you find yourself using Ctrl-based key shortcuts at all. It's so much easier to reach than either of the standard control positions, and caps is pretty fucking useless on modern PCs anyway. If I for some reason need to set cruise control all I have to do is hold down Fn and Ctrl turns into Caps.

What else?

Why would I want a numpad, further decreasing ergonomity by forcing the mouse to be even further to the right?

I'm a programmer, not an accountant. Numpads are mostly by people who do a shitload of work with numbers or by people who don't know how to touch type.
>>
>>53845593
it's useful when you don't have a mouse.
>>
>>53845593
So you can get a context menu with just the keyboard if necessary, or just if useful since you can push the button faster than you move your hand to the mouse.

The vast number of your symbols are on different keys than you're used to with 101/2.

sudo -e /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-keyboard.conf

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
EndSection

ctrl:nocaps makes capslock into ctrl key, ctrl:swapcaps will swap capslock and left ctrl

Agreed OP. What a useless button.
>>
i use cap lock more than any of the 12 F keys.
>>
>>53840850
I don't mind capslock. I think it's a moderately useful button that should certainly exist on a full size keyboard. However, for historical reasons (The capslock key on old typewriters is simply a mechanical lock of the shift key) it lies in one of the more attractive positions on the keyboard, whereas it isn't used nearly as much as, say, punctuation keys or backspace. The question we should be asking is why capslock hasn't been moved to the other rarely used IBM standard keys, such as scroll lock, numlock, end, sysrq, pause etc.

Then again, chromebooks have already replaced it with a search key. I would wager that this will become something of a standard in the future.
