head pressure is a total non-issue.
If you're not a complete vegetable, you can figure out how to tighten it so that it stays in place and doesn't hurt.

Eyestrain is a real issue, but it depends on what you're looking at. If you're staring at a bright image, it's no problem to go at it for a few hours, but if you're staring at a dark image, for example the new Godzilla movie, you'll feel your retinas burning within 10-20 minutes.
>>
>>53841046
shouldn't the retina problem happen in the reverse order?

when I look st my monitor in the highest brightest setting it does cause eye strain

Eyes have muscles. If you look at same distance for a long time your eyes will feel sore.

With these VR hmds due to optics, you're in fact looking at screens at great distance. With vive your eyes are fixed to infinity, don't know how's with rift because its a piece of shit.

In any case, you should take breaks every once in a while should you be working with monitors or with hmd. I like to keep my workstation next to a window so I can look outside every now and then. My eyesight is tested every year and I've sat in front of a screens my whole life. My eyesight been pretty much the same for ten years now.

>>
>>53843295
>Am I being memed upon? Did you seriously believe your parents when they said that looking at monitors close up is bad for your eyes?
It's not the distance that matters, it's the focusing strength.

The more your eyes have to focus, the harder it strains them. That's why it's physically painful to look at very close things while trying to keep them in focus. Focusing on close things over longer periods of time deteriorates the muscles in your eyes.

The Oculus Rift and other HMDs have a very distant focal plane. (I think the Vive focuses at infinity, not sure about the Rift but it might either be a few meters or also infinity)

Ergo using a HMD is actually healthier for your eyes than using a standard display.
>>
>>53843359
Deterioration in these muscles is also why old people begin to have trouble reading and need reading glasses. The muscles have deteriorated so much that your eyes can physically no longer focus on things that close.

Bought the Rift for sit-down experiences because it got a better solution on how to display the content with the use of better optics etc... (The FOV difference seems to be so small it wont be as noticable as people think according to all the sites that has tested both. Check vrnreds.de and flyinside studios).
Rift got better ergonomics, integrated sound fabric cover to let your face breath while having it on.

Bought the Vive to give the the roomscale and controllers from the start.

Will most likely be keeping the Rift at the end of the year because of the touch controllers since it doesnt seem like the Vive will be any better when the Rift gets Touch.

Also, Vive doesnt have VorpX yet, but it will most likely get it soon as the developer gets it.

There are more positive sides on using a fabric cover than something that's airtight like plastic.

The fabric cover makes it lighter, lets your face breathe, fog on the lenses because of high temperature from the display etc...

If you use some water and some microfiber cloth it's actually quite easy to clean it.
>>
>>53845589
It literally still has plastic on the inside, there is no weight saving. Lycra for the IPD adjustment was neat, though. However, it seems like for the outside they just wanted something that lets IR through, which you can do with plastic as well.

>>
>>53845611
With the fabric they where able to use much less plastic.

Rift is at 470g with integrated sound, Vive is at 555g without sound.
The rift is a lot less front heavy which lets it rest on your face more easy for longer sessions (this is extremely important).

>no eye relief adjustment

Okay.
>>
>>53845662
The Rift CV1 is 6.6% heavier than the DK2 (470g vs 441g) 18% lighter than the Vive (470g vs 555g). Nowhere near as much of a difference as people made it sound like.

The eye relief in the Vive is nothing.
The distance pre-set on the Rift is the best distance for that optic and display. The IPD is the only important adjustment inside the headset itself.

The lower FoW is so miniscule its nothing like everyone that uses both are saying. The comparisson pictures people are throwing around doesnt mean shit.

You forget to take into calculation that Rift has lower weight and lower SDE while the Vive has at least 200g more weight with headset and a more noticable SDE.

The only reason to use Vive is to get roomscale.
The Rift will dominate when the Touch arrives and hopefully Oculus will add more cameras to give it a bigger roomscale capability.

(The FOV difference seems to be so small it wont be as noticable as people think according to all the sites that has tested both. Check vrnreds.de and flyinside studios).

Vive can do sit down stuff as well. Optics are equal according to n^x+1 media reports. Well rift's optics are shittier as you have to manually slide your rift up and down on your face to get clear picture, vive has a dial to move the screens. Rift has smaller fov and it hurts oculus' people as they have not said anything about the fov in a long time. Nate told tested some time ago that cv1 will have bigger fov than dk2, but now all are tighlipped about it as they don't want to lie.

>Rift got better ergonomics, integrated sound fabric cover to let your face breath while having it on.

Ergonomics, integrated sound, if they are important to you. Both are way better than dk2 and I had no problems with it whatsoever.

Under the fabric is normal plastic shell. Fabric is just a gimmick. There are multiple reports that rift cv1 feels hot, so "breathability" is a moot pro.

>Will most likely be keeping the Rift at the end of the year because of the touch controllers since it doesnt seem like the Vive will be any better when the Rift gets Touch.

We'll see, can't say yet. But by the looks of it, oculus home doesn't appear to have anything but exclusives going for it. All sales are final, no user reviews, no interplayability with steam titles with project cars, no friend chat, no easy way to join friends games.. oh yeah and reporting to facebook every 30 secs, too. I wont be using Oculus Home. I'm not buying the Rift for the exclusives.

I bought the Rift since it has less SDE, ATW (I know Steam has an equivalent for longer periods of screen-delay), better ergonomics and reportivly better controllers (still Beta, I know).

I think most of my time will be with the Vive purely because I love roomscale and having controllers at launch, but that's pretty much it.

>Did anyone ever find out who they contracted to make the Steam Controller? Did they? From that video it almost seems like they did it in house.
They did it theirself.

HTC on the other hand manufactures the vive so it'll be made by small taiwanese sweatshop children
>>
>>53843460
They need more videos like this. It almost makes me want to buy a Steam controller... almost.
>>
>>53846585
I know EXACTLY how you feel.
Watching the video really made me want to buy a steam controller; but then I remembered that I really have absolutely zero need for one because I've got an old X360 controller for those times I rarely do want to use one (mostly back when I used to play GTAV and wanted to fly. Was a lot more natural feeling.) and even then, there's just no reason to have a controller because I won't be using my 720p slightly damaged TV for PC use anyway.

But god damn, did I want one.
>>
>>53846567
>They did it theirself.
Wrong. They outsourced it to Flextronics.
>>
>>53846733
Ok. Their own info page for steam controller news says

http://store.steampowered.com/controller/update/dec15

> When we first started designing hardware at Valve, we decided we wanted to try and do the manufacturing as well. To achieve our goal of a flexible controller, we felt it was important to have a similar amount of flexibility in our manufacturing process, and that meant looking into automated assembly lines. It turns out that most consumer hardware of this kind still has humans involved in stages throughout manufacturing, but we kind of went overboard, and built one of the largest fully automated assembly lines in the US.

Could you link your source for Flextronics? I didn't find it quickly on googol
>>
>>53846797
Not him but you can see the Flextronics logo on the top of the warehouse in the video. Apparently it's owned by them. Not sure how involved Valve was in the process but they probably got help. Flextronics also makes the Xbox One so it would make sense.
>>
>>53846844
Yeah I saw that but I thought that maybe line manufacturing robots etc came from flextronics, maybe on a lease or something.

Not that I care that much in the end. It's a cool video nevertheless. I hope they'll make more eventually.

One of the machines is made by this company. You can see the logo at 0:47

Not sure how much of the line up they did though.

I always wondered how these machines can be so precise even under such huge workloads.

Also how do people even design and assemble all this? Modern technology is incredible if I think about it.

Doing mechatronics, it's not as hard as it looks. Just takes time and a LOT of upfront money

The next generation is basically cheap robot arms that are general purpose instead of specialized.

Worked fine here. File a charge back with your card if they send you one, and send your bank the messages you sent them to cancel. Free Rift.

Games have to be designed to be forward facing at all times. It's a bigger difference than you think.

Yea but how would that matter in rift vs vive?

As the post said, Touch only supports 270 degrees by default. Only in non-supported configurations will it support full 360.

Vive supports full 360 in the default config.

Well, yeah, but some of those are already shipped in more rural and shittier places. By luck one can get it already on monday.

My vive hasnt been shipped yet, and somehow I'm guessing that I wont get it by tuesday because my country has prettty shit tier logistics on all stages

It's two screens glued to your head, plus a gyroscope. This achieves nothing more than a legitimate computer interface except to showcase features of tech demos made specifically for this device.
