What happened to steamOS and gaming on Linux?
Thinking of building a shitbox for steam games on my big screen telly and I'm curious if I should go windows or steam.
Please don't post bullshit one year old benchmarks, I'm curious about CURRENT performance.
Also has AMD or Nvidia drivers improved on Linux much?
You could always use steam link so you can just run the games off your powerful gaming PC and just have a cheap HTPC in your living room.

I do this sort of. Keep my powerful computers in the basement which is always cool temperature wise and have a fanless shitbox in my office. Nice and quiet but I can still do gayming.

Is it time to install?

reinstall gentoo

>steamOS
Once they realized windows 8 wasn't going to cuck them gaben lost interest and even the most faggoty steamfags can't live without their precious windows.
>>53837305
They've given up on it?
What about games on steam?
And drivers?
>>53837095
Nvidia drivers on Linux are in pair with Windows.
SteamOS is a meme, you might as well just use a normal linux distro

>What about games on steam?
There's like 500 Linux compatible games. The vast majority are either ancient or indie shovelware.
Go with Windows if you want to game.
>>53837658
Fuck.
>>53837637
I doubt that.
>>53837609
>They've given up on it?
I hope not. If SteamOS and Linux gaming fails, we're all fucked.
>>53837095
Windows 10 didn't lock out steam so SteamOS is just a half assed plan B for source games.

Can confirm >>53837637
steam OS is just ubundu running with big picture mode. Its designed to be used with a steam controller. At least alchemist and brewmaster were. They name the releases after dota characters.

But with Linux being less resource intensive as long as I'm using nvidia I'll see better performance?
>>53838287
Pretty much. I had a big performance boost coming from windows. but my experience is not applicable to every situation. Im on a T530 thinkpad running arch linux with the zen kernel.
I say steamOS is bad bc it is pretty graphics intensive by nature. On decent hardware it wont matter, but I am working with limited recources so I just use xfce which is pretty small compared to unity and bigpicturemode in ubuntu based steamos
>>53838287
The OS doesn't use a real significant amount of resources compared to the games. You'll probably get better performance on Windows just because the drivers are written better
>>53837267
That's some sexy rice.
>>53838364
>>53838287
You get better performance on Linux with Nvidia drivers.
>>53838410
This is what I was trying to say. AMD is garbage on linux. Nvidia was finally nice to us.
>>53838432
So if I limit myself to steam games if I run Ubuntu mate instead of windows I'm going to see identical, if not better, performance?
Would I be able to get away with something like a gtx 650 then?
