>tfw you will never spend thousands of dollars to listen to weeb music like pic related only to realize that in your advanced age the high quality gear you have is no different than using earbuds from the dollar tree
Why even go on?

You realize there's very little information above 10kHz to begin with anyway right?

t. 22 year old who can still hear close to 19kHz.

It's a hobby, plenty of people spend tens of thousands on stupid shit they don't need so they can pursue their hobbies, like golf or yachting or anime garbage.
The only problem I see is that none of the ridiculously overpriced crap they buy offers any provable advantages over regular cables and so on.

Wasn't there some study where they used coathangers vs. pear cables and most audiophiles weren't able to tell the difference?

>earbuds from the dollar tree

ok now there is a difference between your shitty dollar store earbuds and a decent pair of cans. There is a threshold of diminishing returns however, and that is reached around the $100-200 mark.

What would be the point. That stuff is all synthesised and recorded digitally. There would be no difference in using some shitty $5 earbuds (besides placebo). I thought the point of audiophilia was to keep every part of it as close to analog as possible.

It's best to alter the distance setting on the subwoofer in your receiver. For instance, in the Denon receivers, all speakers by default are set to 12 ft distance. If your sub is at this distance, enter the distance as 3 ft further away than it actually is. The receiver will then delay the signal to the other speakers by that distance. Naturally, a greater difference in distance will result in a greater degree of phase adjustment. It is recommended to start with flat frequency response. An uneven response can be an indication of more serious problems, such as resonances. Notice the notch on 1B at about 800 Hz. That is a resonance. Similarly, some minor resonance above 500 Hz for SB2/SB3. For bass frequencies, the roll-off can be modeled so close to ideal low pass or high pass filter, it is not really as crucial. One rule of thumb is that if we use 6-1/2" woofer based front speakers in a sealed box, they can be comfortably crossed over at 80 Hz without much phase/delay time adjustment (the SB2 without delay time adjustment is already quite good). For anything equal to 4-1/2" for smaller, crossover at 100 Hz may cause localization. Placement becomes important. For vented box front speakers, large delay time adjustment may be needed. Then be sure to play at maximum volume, don't be a pleb:

don't be a trog

there are three kinds of speakers:
1. cheap plastic shit drivers (JBL LSR 305, logitech, pioneer Best Buy)
2. mid tier good drivers with wood cabinetry
3. cant afford tier drivers with excellent crossover circuitry and cabinets

tier 2 is available used everywhere for between $250 to $700 for a pair of speakers; speakers being the most important component

there are three kinds of amplifiers/receivers
1. cheap tier -- good enough
2. good tier -- very good - toroidal transformer(s), large 4+ capacitors
3. cant afford tier -- very very good - as in tier 2 but higher end components

tier 2 can be found online for between $100 to $500 used

so there's your very good system for about as low as $350 to about as high as $1200 -- it will sound substantially better than a cheap tier system

not really unaffordable, and close enough to higher end systems to approach diminishing returns

I'm putting together a little home audio system mostly because I love staring at spectrum analyzers and vu meters bounce around.

I came across this guy for 200 dollars. Not the actual picture, but in nearly as good of condition.
I'm going to look at it tomorrow before work and probably buy it. Anyone know if it'll be worth a decent penny if I ever get bored of it?

I tried using a free pair of earbuds and would recommend them over being stabbed in the back.

That being said, no. I will not spend thousands to be an audiophile.
