So I am intrested in computers, but no idea where to start at. My teachers and some people I work tell me I should focus on a CS degree but I honestly do not find programming all that exciting. I guess I am more of a Hardware person than a Software. I know eventually I have to learn to program no matter what but I at least if I focus on hardware it wont be so stressful. Personally, I just love fixing computers or experimenting with parts (reusing or making a small embedded-like PC for specific tasks.). What kind of career can I hope to get? My dream is to one day be able to develop new processors or other embedded chips.

Repairing computers and engineering processors are kinda two different things, anon. Go study electronic engineering and pick up some certifications (CompTIA, MCSE, Linux, etc) on the way so you can get a job part time fixing computers (technical support, help desk or desktop support) while you're working your way towards a degree. The practical experience from working in an entry level position will help solidify fundamentals you'll need.

Thanks. I wasnt really sure of what was the correct term, I thought it would be IT but that was too broad.

Looking this up, specifically it would be Computer Engineer. Average six figure (under 110K salary), only bachelors needed. Only downside is the outlook isnt that great so it should be slightly more competitive.

Networking / System Administration
Take classes, work towards certs, get a part time help desk job while you go to school to build your resume or an internship.

I don't know who your teachers are. I'm assuming they're High School teachers? They don't know shit about the industry. Really you'll be spending years studying and grinding and you'll find no one cares about your degree without experience and if you have experience with no degree and certs you'll get underpaid.

I went all the way through writing this before realizing >>53834355 said basically the same thing.
