Why are you choosing this over a flieger? I've heard that historically pilots wouldn't use such a complicated looking watch. This style definitely has actually been used.

Bought some denim today, decided to make a strap. Not sure how to get the end not to fray, but I think it turned out well. Probably gonna throw some glue on the end and let it dry hard. This is the only watch I have to show it off with, so shut the fuck up about non-bracelet/nylon/silicon on a diver.

You put a layer of rubber/leather on the bottom, and fold it so the ends are tucked between the rubber/leather and the strap

The 7546 wasn't even Seiko's best effort. In terms of accuracy and refinement it was decidedly below stuff like the 0852. But it is still miles ahead of most modern movements. Jewels and quartz, a match made in heaven.

Re. the coil, this is something my watchmaker has commented on. He is also surprised at how big it is for a "dressy" watch, but he chalks that down more to older design rather than the need for more power, since I believe Seiko was still using mechanical movements in their divers into the 1980s since quartz was not quite strong enough.

To start with, vintage slav watches like Poljot,Slava and Raketa. Will usually work without servicing for a good number of years. Vintage swiss pieces are another option. Most of them come with 18mm lugs, Soviet watches rarely come with anything but 18mm.

Maybe you could get a decent looking Poljot 3133 for slightly above the 200$ mark.

And not all vintage watches need to be serviced immediately.

Made a mistake, it's actually the 059. It's the latest Alpinist range, on the right on the picture, the one of the left released 10 year ago.
>>
>>53843978
Good luck finding one.
>>
>>53843989
Yeah that might just help me make this decision. It's only sold in Japan like the rest of the Alpinists, seems to be still produced, but impossible to find on the internet.

I'll go to Tokyo in a few months, could wait until then perhaps, buy a whole box and then sell them a fortune on ebay.
>>

>>53844066
If it was still produced then it would be as common to get as the 017. I like it more as well, but i'm probably going to get a SARG009 with a bracelet to replace all the watches i've sold recently.

Though i don't think you'll have any luck on this one, but good luck famalamas and search for vintage King Seiko's while you're there.

It just seems to be less popular, and there are plenty Japan only models that remain relatively unknown. It's more recent than the previous gen of Alpinists to which the SARB017 belongs, and it wasn't a limited run. Everything points to it being a current production model.

Will investigate on nihon websites.
>>
>>53844256
Well, the SARB017 does have a very interesting appeal to it.

And the more i look at it the more i think if i want the 017 or the SARG009 as the first watch i've paid more then 150$ for.

I am surprised how I have yet to see someone wearing a mechanical watch yet there is this whole market for entry-level mechanical movements. To be honest it kinda seems silly to me. I would think you would buy a mechanical watch out of admiration for the craft and because a nicely decorated mechanical movement is nice to look at. So it doesn't make much sense to me to buy an entry-level mechanical with a movement that has no finesse, barely any finishing and that is basically disposable. Quartz makes more sense for me there. The only downside really is the 1Hz second hand.

>>53848061
>Newsflash: not everyone has enough disposable income to spend 2k+ on a watch.

But then they should just buy a quartz watch. A mechanical watch is purely a luxury item. So there is no rush to buy it. So save up and buy something nice.
>>
>>53848109
Again you've completely failed to explain how to someone who finds the mechanics of a mechanical watch intriguing an entry level mechanical is not better than a quartz.

I focus on reputable brands, value for money, and style/functionality in that order. Look at watches for long enough (try them on, too, if you can) and you'll find a few favorites that you keep coming back to. Also, knowing what measurements will for your wrist helps narrow the selection down.

>>
>>53857284
Blue/green
>>
>>53856880
Its been a rough process for me.

-First I figured out what I could comfortably spend (which also factors in the replaceability factor, yeah I could shell out 800+ but I would become parinoid about damaging or loosing it and hence wouldnt be able to enjoy it)

Second, the longest stage and one which is under a fair bit of change is figuring out your own tastes (ie do I want a buys watch or a minimalist one, bigger /smaller, bezel style ect) and whether quartz or mechanical

Third, where it gets more serious and where you have to ask questions rather than just lurk is determining issues of quality and value for money.

Final stage, actually getting the watch this is the stage Im currently in and because I was after a vintage watch one of the more difficult ones as it invovles a lot of waiting for items to appear on ebay as well as asking yourself how much does that particualar damage on it bother you

Black/blue if you want it to be slightly more understated. Pepsi if you want a more sporty look.
>>
>>53843814
I had the opportunity to see both side by side like on this pic. I guess it depends on what you're looking for: the 017 has a dressier look, and pretty much seems to come from another era, while the 059 looks more like an actual outdoors watch you wouldn't really mind to scratch. Also note the 017 has a unusual color palette which makes it look like shit on anything but leather, while the 059 allows for more variety.

They indeed appear quite different, but they're closer than you'd think. Both go for an outdoors/adventure look, except 017 is more Indiana Jones, while 059 is more Jason Bourne.

>>53846170
>what are the indicators for in the inner bezel?
Air to ground signals reminder, so you know how to communicate with a search plane or helicopter which may not be able to land on your position. Not a bad idea to keep a memo card in your pocket when going >>>/out/, so it's a good idea to have it on your watch as well.
