Get a good TCP/IP reference guide.
CCENT books will teach you the absolute basics of the basics.
After you should have a better idea of what you're interested in and can research accordingly.
Ciscos CCNA books are pretty good. Some of the information is specific to their hardware but most of it will be applicable across everything.

Beej's Network Guide is a pretty good overview. It's not as in-depth as the TCP/IP Guide, but it's great for brushing up.
