So I have this Lenovo Ideapad U510 and decided it'd be perfect for Ubuntu. The problem is that it utilizes UEFI which I am not too familiar with and snooping in search engines yields nothing about my particular problem.

So it had win8.1, I made a bootable Ubuntu live USB and did a clean install (wiping my windows cause I had nothing I wanted to hold on to and dont game a lot). Ubuntu installed no problem, my issue is different. Win8 took like 15 secs max to boot since it utilizes the SSD for boot files. Ubuntu takes 35 secs to boot, does it also utilize the SSD the same way? Should I have done something different since its UEFI?

you can get like 30% more performance by spending less than 10% more up front.

that means you dont have to upgrade again as soon. you're wasting money in the long run by getting a locked cpu.

and have you compared benchmarks on the CPUs to make sure you actually get more performance per dollar by getting the older one?

>>
>>53831004
You might want to increase a bit because a decent gaming build is around $850-$1100.

You need a I5 or I5-K.
8-16GB RAM.
A really good Videocard, this will tell you how good your perfomance will be and around 50% of the budget.
A good HSF if you get a K CPU.
A SSD.
650-750W PSU.
Z97 motherboard for 1150 socket or Z170 for 1151.

err... you're right. He can cheap out on things like case or hard disk though if he doesn't give a fuck about noise or doesn't place it literally right next to him. Maybe an AMD cpu would be fine as well for half the price of an i5. Still, in total it would be about a ~$150 save.

The motherboard is just bad in general.

Look for GA-Z97X-UD3H, ASUS Z97-A, MSI GAMING 5 if you are looking for Z97 motherboards.
Get a I5-4590, and since you are looking for a Z97 motherboard get a unlocked I5 like the 4690K.

PCpartpicker its not shit, helps finding cheap prices, try it on, make a list with your build.
>>
>>53831781
Fans don't consume much. Keep in mind future intel processors and AMD gpus will be stronger and more power efficient. They'll most likely consume less than current gen esp the gpu. 650W should be plenty.

Also why are you going with old hardware? Newer ones cost pretty much the same.

Get an Asus Z170A, an i5-6500, a $60 128gb ssd for games/os, a cheap 5200-5400 rpm 1tb hdd for pictures/videos (go 7200 if you won't get an ssd), the cheapest case you can find with 4 frontal usb ports, cheap ram (8gb=$35), a $50-60 650w tougherpower or EVGA or xfx etc and you're set. Don't update the bios and you can overclock the cpu just fine if it need be. You can bump it up if you have more case i.e. 850 evo, case, ram.
>>
>>53831844

>>
>>53832287
>haha nope, intel has done that like ONCE in the last 12 years.
Wasn't sure where I was going with the other post. Point is intel might do that, and if they don't then he can just get a cheap i7 that fits his socket a couple of years down the road and maintain a decent pc. Buying like 3-4 year old processors when the differences in price aren't that significant doesn't make much sense to me. Especially if the accompanying motherboards come in cheaper if you compare the price of a high-end z97 mobo to a newer mid-level one like the Asus Z170A with features like an m2 slot at 32gbit/s, can overclock great, ram oc up to he 4000mhz range, better sli/cf support, usb 3.1gen2/usb c, etc.
>>
Is there like a /g/ overclock sticky or general or some shit.
>>
>>53832493
Why exactly do you think a 6600 can't be overclocked?
>>
>>53832443
Well I just figured since they didn't have their own power source that it was fine if they dried before plugging them back in.

I've done the same thing with keyboards that had stuck or double-triggering keys and they've worked fine after being soaked. Just let it dry for 24 hours.

>>53832530
water can get stuck and once you plug them in they go poof. and keyboards are quite sturdy and dont have many small components or nooks and crannies where water can get stuck.

also 24 hours is not nearly enough to be sure it's dry.
put them in a bag of uncooked rice for several days to properly dry.

i dont think it would be too hard since windows already can control those things itself, you'd just need a program to output it through a port to a controller with knobs and link it somehow. something with USB would probably work best since the audio ports are single channel each.
