>>
>>53829462
Yeah, Microsoft's aggressive tactics have really paid off for them. Windows 8 never gained any traction because they didn't force it on people and Windows 7 was fine. Windows 7 is still fine, but this time they're all but forcing people to upgrade, unless they have a decent level of technical expertise to avoid it.

In a couple of years all the people pooperpained about their methods will have simmered down and forgotten about it, and Microsoft will have them where they want them.

For both 64-bit and 32-bit versions, the most popular is Windows 7 by a small margin.
>>
>>53829539
So what happened, did Microsoft suddenly automatically create a ton of Steam accounts from a Windows 10 server farm? Seems more likely than a bunch of Linux users switching to Windows 10.

The funny thing is that even if every single Linux steam user switched to Windows 10, it would only go up by 0.83%

Windows 10's share has been rising for months. Linux's share has been falling for months. The two aren't related. It's just more people being badgered/tricked into installing Windows 10, and interest in gaymen in Linux dropping off further and further as Valve try to pretend SteamOS doesn't exist.

Not like no one saw it coming. I'm surprised it isn't higher seeing as you actively have to avoid the Windows 10 update. Unless you have disabled Windows Update, which many people do because "updates slow down your computer".

>The two aren't related.
They're directly related. Steam is gaining new users, mostly on Windows while the Linux numbers are growing slowly or staying relatively static.

There's also the Wine factor which falsely decreases Linux numbers, and the whole SteamOS situation where users who install SteamOS either on a dedicated gaming machine or as part of a multi-boot or virtual machine setup no longer count in the Steam stats at all.

No they aren't, and nothing you said implies they are in any way. Linux's share has never risen much above 1% and falls by fractions of a percent each month. It's completely and utterly irrelevant to Windows 10 storming up the charts. These people aren't switching from fucking Linux. They're upgrading from previous versions of Windows. If every single Linux user who's ever been counted on Steam migrated to Windows 10 within a month it'd barely be noticable.

As someone that voluntarily installed W10 it makes me feel guilty. I avoided it for a long time because I don't want to make Microsoft feel like their borderline forced upgrades work out for them.

But I was installing a new SSD so I figured I might as well get the move over with now. W10, at the least the Pro version, is tolerable once you get rid of basically everything they added after W7. I'm effectively left with a metro themed W7 now.
>>

At what point did Microsoft care about PC gaming beyond plans to lock it down? Their current plan after all is to add a new 'console execution mode' that removes many of the benefits of PC gaming in order to offer a more Xbox-like environment.

It seems entirely plausible that at some point Microsoft will push to label Win32 and older applications as 'legacy' that won't be available to all Windows 10 users.

I think you underestimate how much Windows and the entire PC platform is actually dependent upon gaming.

Gamers are the guys going out buying the newest hardware and software and telling all their friends about it, they are essential to Windows livelihood.

Microsoft would never shoot themselves in the foot like that.
>>
>>53830838
If developers used standards from the start it would be cheaper for them to produce games that supported more platforms. Right now they sometimes even have to produce multiple backends just to support different versions of Windows.

OpenGL 4.1 + SDL would get them support for Windows 7, Windows 10, Linux with all drivers, and OS X.
OpenGL 4.3 + SDL would get them support for Windows 7, Windows 10, Linux with Nvidia, AMD Pro drivers and soon other drivers would work as well.
Vulkan + SDL would get them support for Windows 7, Windows 10, Linux with Nvidia, and AMD Pro drivers.

If Apple would update their GPU handling and developers got on board they could greatly simplify their workload by picking one of those solutions instead of DirectX.

Think how much of Windows gaming Microsoft has already shifted into their closed ecosystem with the Xbox. Their next step is expanding that into Windows 10 with UWP and DX12.

If they were to do it now to kill Steam it would be a bit like cutting off their own nose, but what about in a few years when Windows 10 is the only widely used version that Microsoft still officially supports and most Windows developers are on the new UWP bandwagon.

Microsoft has thrown away backwards compatibility before and left it to third parties who still cared about niche legacy software. Is there any reason to think that we won't see Windows go UWP-only in the future with the Windows Store as the only easy source of UWP software?

I can see them trying to go that direction, but I can see them failing horribly at it. Much like Windows phone, Microsoft is bad at that kind of shit. Steam is already so heavily entrenched and quite good that I can't imagine anything overtaking it this century.
>>
Remember when Steve Ballmer went like "developers developers developers" on stage? That's exactly the reason why gaming (among other things) is more popular on Windows.

Make it easy for devs to make software on your platform and the rest will come on its own. Linux is fine and dandy but it's kind of a headache at the end of the day. Ubuntu had the right idea but their whole system stinks to me.
>>
>>53830315
It actually is, tinkering with linux can teach you the skills required for sysadmin job. Playing gaymes can teach you the skills required for manchild in moms basement job.
>>
>>53831451
Normal people aren't going to understand what's going on if Microsoft soft locks Windows to their store and the UWP format. Its just going to be "What, Steam doesn't work with the new update? Why do I have to click through these warning boxes every time? Fix your shit Valve!"

It may not kill Valve, but it would certainly erode their marketshare substantially.
>>
>>53831533
Funnily enough, people actually make money playing video games these days.
>>
>>53831329
Because I like to experiment and learn things, with Linux its easier (unless you use Ubuntu...).

But for home use I see no reason if you have no problem with an non-legit copy.

On the other hand unless you like games or need a very specific software for Windows only, I see no reason to prefer Windows either, today you can do everything the easy way in Linux too.
>>
>>53831540
That's just not going to happen though because it would break tons of other software as well.

The only way for them to pull that off would be to slowly increase Windows Store integration over the course of say, 10 years, until people become familiar with it and actually use the Windows Store.

Then they can pull the plug and lock it down, but I highly doubt they will ever be able to pull that off.
>>
>>53831540
The problem with this theory is that it implies they would do this to make money when it would obviously make them lose billions from all future installments of windows. It would also force steam to make a decent OS and make it good.

Why would you sabotage your billionare corp to do this? Every developer thinks they can make their games piracy proof but it will never happen as long as people want to do it.

>>
>>53831616
Its not impossible and its not 10 years away, and it is going to happen. They're already clearly in the process of deprecating Win32. Windows will get soft lock to Windows Store/UWP at first and maybe it would stay that way, but even that will deter the majority of users from installing software that isn't from the preferred source.

I'm really not sure why people think its impossible that Microsoft would be able to do this. Apple and Google have both proven that most developers will happily switch APIs and put up with the demands of app stores. In a business environment Microsoft is adding ways for IT to add in-house applications to the store, and IT already typically has to come around to install software not in approved lists anyway.

Most users won't blame Microsoft, they will blame the applications that don't work even if there's nothing their devs can do about it and they'll just use whatever is now easiest. Knowledgeable users will install Wine for Windows for legacy software just like they already install Dosbox.

The idea of trying to start a "console war" between Windows and Linux is retarded. Linux has no exclusive games. In fact, the very concept of "Linux exclusive" is dumb because OpenGL and Vulkan work on Windows, so it would be trivial to port. Even if the company didn't want to fans would probably port it somehow. So people don't switch to Linux to play games. Rather, people switch to Linux for other reasons, then play games once they get there. If a game isn't for Linux, they use Wine or VM with GPU passthrough. Basically people use Linux for reasons other than gaming, and happen to game while using Linux. However there are some people who use Windows solely for gaming. Basically it's an apples and oranges comparison. People who use Linux are usually technically knowledgeable to emulate Windows to play Windows games, while a Windows user would never need to emulate Linux. This isn't like PS4 vs. Xbone.

>>53836471
The sad thing is that because its trivial for Linux games to Windows developers would save a ton of time and money going Linux-first. Just like a number of times in the past developers have targeted lesser used platforms because they made multi-platform easier through support of standards. Except that this time its unlikely to happen because the eye of watchdogs are off Microsoft and they are once again free to engage in monopolistic crap like paying developers to target their new 'Universal' application platform that only works on Windows 10.
>>
>>53836753
Spending any time at all developing for Linux is just throwing money down the drain. Even developing for Mac is a losing proposition, and they have 4x the market share of Linux.

And Pro costs a fuckton.
Even if you have a normal license, the upgrade is fucking expensive.

It was the same for Win8.
Luckily the only trouble I had with the regular Win8 is that stupid "Sonar" thing that pops up a window when you play games - saying you are running out of memory.

It was possible to disable that shit through regedit.
>>
>>53831881
that's the best part.
win10 offers literally nothing for gamers.

it's all about the DX12 buzz-word, yet no current game is using it.
and there is one big fucking thing that people forget.

- If the game is poorly written, see Korean free-2-play titles like Blade & Soul, TERA, or even APB:R.. these games will still have shit framerates.
- IF the game was properly written, see Battlefield 4 for example, or Black Ops 3, it is already using all the cores available, thus you don't have any performance issues anyway.

So it's basically kinda pointless.
I understand it will kick up the performance a notch IF you have a fully supported DX12 GPU (which most people don't have), and IF the game implements DX12 properly.

I've rapidly lost all respect for Microsoft, and consequently have lost a great deal of interest in anything to do with their products. Microsoft's clumsy, desperate, visionless push to get PC users to adopt dumbed-down mobile-oriented apps purely for their own commercial benefit; the unrelentingly persistent, unethical, and highly deceptive way they're trying to trick less tech-savvy Windows 7 and 8.1 users into "upgrading" to Windows 10; and their insistence on reducing user choice and control over Windows have all left a very bad taste in my mouth. This is an inept company struggling for relevance in the mobile era by shamelessly abusing its monopoly on desktop operating systems, and I don't want to play any part in helping them do that.

if you had actually paid attention instead of being a winbaby cuck you'd realise that the 30.9% in the "unknown" section falls under the "unix, unix-like" category which is almost always going to be linux, but the shitty testing methodology w3techs use can't get reliable operating system statistics because websites like to fuzz that information

see the statistics by w3cook that aren't shit at what they do to to get reliable operating system data from within the "unix, unix-like" category

and the 67.8% to "unix, unix-like" category is heavily biased towards microsoft as w3techs use shitty testing methodology that state that any technology that is found on a single page will count for the whole website (and any subdomains), and that subdomains aren't counted - great, so any website that uses a microsoft front end for whatever reason (employee login) but uses unix backend will be counted towards microsoft

windows 32.3% market share i.e., "can't get closer to 50%"; linux 68% market share not a majority, where the fuck did you learn maths
