Is a high end gaming pc wasted without a 144 hz display?
There isn't a GPU yet that gets more than 60 FPS on Ultra in modern games like Quantum Break so a 144 hz display is useless.

the clarity at a high refresh rate and low g2g monitor is excellent and i wouldn't go back to 60hz even if i can't get all games above 90 fps. i'd say go for it, it's night and day in stuff like first person anything, racing games, anything else that is semi-fast pace.

It's hard to tell the difference between 60 and 96 fps in games from my experience. It's mostly noticeable on the desktop. 96 to 144 would be an even greater diminishing gain.
Get a 27" 1440p Korean monitor and OC it.
Since you had to ask, no. I wouldn't recommend high refresh rates to people unless they were using a CRT monitor. If you're not good in games then you should buy a monitor that is nice to use for other purposes like movies. Get an IPS panel.

144Hz is noticeable but the returns definitely diminish after 60Hz. I play fast paced shooters and I recently had to buy a new monitor. I had enough money to choose from 3 of the following: 144Hz, IPS, FreeSync, low lag, 1440p, and ultrawide. I decided to try a 29" 1080p ultrawide IPS freesync monitor. Ultrawide is great for >muh immersion and >muh multitasking but it's definitely still a meme. The monitor only goes to 75Hz but FreeSync helps it feel much smoother and I'm satisfied with what I got. So basically 144Hz is only for hardcore gaymers and I would recommend spending the money on other monitor memes like IPS or adaptive refresh unless you're literally making money from playing the games. Also, Source engine games like CSGO still get screen tearing with adaptive refresh unless you enable VSync, which adds lag.

1440p@144Hz didn't exist when i bought my 1440p@60Hz, though the price is about the same now. My laptop has a 1080p@75Hz display, though. difference in refresh rate is not that noticeable.
I have a 60hz tv and a 75hz monitor, and I can only notice it in the blurriness of words. I wonder how a 144hz monitor would be like in that topic.

I don't really play fps much due to "motion sickness" symptoms. But what I've really bought into is the idea that 144hz monitor is great for browsing internet and just general uses.
