Hey /g/uys, so I'm a broke college fag persuing a degree in software development. My previous laptop broke so I've budgeted out about $800 for a new one.

I play some games and I'm gonna be taking programming courses, so a good gpu and a fair amount of RAM would be nice.
I plan on dual booting winblows and linux.
Winblows for games/linux for the superior development environment

What would be the best laptop I can get for 800$ or less?

Ive done some searching and this seems to be the best option.

I own an Asus K501UX-D. It's a pretty decent laptop with an amazing battery life. Only thing that matters is it has an TN display but I don't view the screen in a fucked up position so I Don't really care.
>>
>>53818687
Thanks, I'll check it out.

>I play some games and I'm gonna be taking programming courses
Just drop out now and save your parents' money.
>>
>>53819318
My parents don't pay for my college, I do.
And when I say "some games", I mean on weekends after all my work is done.
It's my way of getting through college, which isn't easy. Some people drink and party, I play games.

You aren't fooling anyone "Jay" or should I say "Pearl" Benitez.
>>
>>53819396
Okay.
Could you be helpful or should I fuck off to /v/
>>

Similar price you can get one with Skylake but less RAM, like single stick 4 GB. I have an almost similar model but its not in bought in USD. Skylake 6700HQ, same GPU, 128GB Samsung m.2 AHCI SSD with a Hitachi 1TB 2.5 inch spin drive.

Its been pretty good for the past few months, but the lid does wobble a bit, the IPS panel is nice and handle most of last years and earlier games at MAX SETTINGS at 1920x1080.

Parties are funner loser. I do both anyway
>>

What a loser.

Continued

And if you remember to configure it in Windows, you can limit the Skylake model's TDP from 45 watt to 35 watt. I can last close to 5 hours of your usual browsing the web with music or your usual text editing like programming or your usual essays.
>>
>>53818609
>I play some games
quit it, buy a light weight business laptop without VGA that can boot Linux. 500$
>>
>>53819520
Wow you must really know how to have a good time.

I don't know why you put talk in quotation marks either
>>
>>53819498
>>53819520

Look, depends on who you hang out with. Parties are great with a bunch of friends. Or to socialise with new people.

Don't go to a party just for parties sake, don't go to party /just/ to have fun. Go do something else to have fun.

tldr; don't waste your time.

>>53819547
Oh yeah? I raise you a Thinkpad P50 configured with everything at 3200 USD, PLAY GAMES AND SERIOUS BUSINESS WORKSTATION STUFF
>>
>>53819485
>>53819537
Alright I'll do that.
Is there a way to lower the TDP under Linux?

Try more showering and less Witcher and maybe some day you'll realize that making out with a hot girl is something that happens IRL as well and is not limited to american teen movies.
>>
>>53819657
You know you can do both, right?
>>
>>53819644
I don't know, never tried it. It is part of the "Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework Driver", its used in ChromiumOS. And I remember reading people having used it on your usual popular flavoured linux distributions so shouldn't be hard to configure it.

Dell 7559, for $750 you get a skylake i5, 8 GB of RAM and a 960M with 4GB, been reading good reviews about it anon
>>
>>53819714
That's actually pretty damn good
>>
>>53819714
Overheats half the time though.

The Asus GL552 runs really cool like CPU and GPU maxed out and its always under 75C, even in my current grueling 32-35C ambient temp and humidity levels of 80%.

I've heard that asus has poor build quality though, what's your experience with this?

Fuck off normalfag, stay in /r9k/
>>

That's /g/ for you.
Mention video games and chaos breaks out.
Probably should have just said I needed the gpu for video editing or 3D animation or something of the sort.

My old man had an Asus (business series) from 2005, lasted till today with broken hinge from a few years ago. Now recent brochure from Asus they have half the pages plastered with "durability assurance" adverts.

He bought the new all aluminum ROG model as replacement.

Refocussing on topic, from my experience and research, Asus do prefer to use cheaper caps and etc on their circuit boards, but they have much lower failure rates than Gigabyte and MSI even with those two liking to put "superior durable caps from Japan!" on their motherboard boxes. tldr Asus doesn't really advertise how much more durable their stuff are compared to the rest, lol.

My ROG GL552 has been pretty good, its all plastic and can be... wobbly at times, I already got a few scratches on it from dropping it a few times from 1 meter up. I guess as long as you don't DROP it hard, no cracks and breaks.

The hinges still bother me though, but I seen the ones on other brands and they are worse... unless its a Thinkpad. Thinkpad hinges from my own experience can even destroy the case if seized up... (Yes, I broke my thinkpad like that when trying to open it after many years of leaving it lying around close...)
>>
>>53819870

Oh, uh and the Skylake GL552 version needs DDR4 if you plan to in the future give it more memory.

I remember looking on Amazon that you can get 2 X 8GB sticks for under 80 USD from Kingston. The chipset limit is 32GB.
>>
>>53819870
>>53819949
Alright sweet, maybe Asus isnt as bad as I thought they where with build quality.
That wobbly feeling with the screen is a bit of a deterrent, but I understand that operating with limited funds, I'm not gonna get the best compy in the world.

Alright I'll keep that in mind if I wanna upgrade my RAM.
>>
>>53819989
You're welcome, and I'm off to other things. I wish you good studies in your education.

You have autism. Stop pretending you have the slightest bit of hope for your life
>>

>gimped 960

Gaymen laptops are shit, OP. No exceptions. Get a cheap, decent laptop for college and a nice desktop for gaymes.
>>
>>53820053
Thanks man, take care.

>>53820066
>oh this guy does things in a different way than I do, he must be autistic
Makes total sense.

I still talk to people and socialize, I just like to play some games every now and then. What's the harm in that man?
I don't play as many games as i used to cause school is so time intensive, but the comfort of knowing that I could if I wanted to is important to me.
>>
>>53820120
Pretty damn good for a cheap laptop that fits all the specifications I require.

I know that Desktop gaming as apposed to gaming on a laptop is, and always will be, far superior.
I'd build my own pc if i had the funds and the time, but I don't right now.
>>
>>53820066
WTF is up with the /g/ attitude of "you're always wrong"? If he said he liked partying and not games, people would be saying instead

>fucking normie, just switch to switch to business already, Chad. install gentoo! xD
