Works fine for me and I doesn't need to resort to hacks to root and custom om to make it bearable to live with. It gets the job done great for me than any android I owned in the past.

I stupidly signed up for outlook mail for school, just to keep everything distinct from my main address.
The spam filter is atrocious. Default filters let through almost everything, and the next filter up from that sent some important emails into spam.
This is an address that I've given out only to my school, nowhere else.
Compared to my gmail account, which I used to sign up for absolutely everything, even shit I'll only need once. Years and years I've had it. Never once had a spam problem.
Not only that, but once in a while outlook will suddenly decide I need to "update my credentials". Don't know what that means, but it stops my emails from getting through. Couple of times it's happened and it delayed some important mail for about a week.
All I had to do was click the "update credentials" link, and suddenly I get my emails. I didn't have to type in a password or anything. God knows what that was about.
So yes, google has made something better than the competing microsoft product.
That said, I love my windows phone.
