Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Is anyone using MythTV or related?

I want to watch and record TV (digital free-to-air broadcast TV, idgaf about cable) on my Linux machine. The MythTV pages for all the tuner cards are ancient, and talk about how support for a certain card will be in the kernel when 2.6.34 comes out and stuff. The Newegg reviews of all the Hauppage cards say they got an update at some point that breaks the Linux compatibility. Somehow. I can't seem to find much recent info on this. Any recommended hardware or sites to find out current news?

Are there any ideological reasons (other than inclusion of nonfree software) not to use Fedora?

(in the vein of "Don't use Debian because of SJW outreach")

For some reason my autism seeks to use only distros which are tolerable ideologically to me. I could write a book on my ideological outlook though, so basically I just want to know petty reasons I shouldn't use it.
>>
>>53805796
I'm pretty interested why so many people ask if they should use Fedora. Is there some recruiting going on somewhere?

Personally I BARELY see anyone actually using Fedora.
>>
>>53805823
Might just be because Linus uses it.

It's one of the worst distros I've used. It can't even render font correctly by default. I don't understand why it doesn't include freetype, considering it's FREE.
>>
>>53805823
In my case:
Dislike Canonical
Mint is okay, but I'd like some variety
Debian, I had some reason more than SJWs but I can't remember it right now
Arch, Gentoo, etc are too high effort
I have nonfree software I enjoy using so the FSF approved distros are out.

(Incidentally another pedantic point I have is that I take the GNU/Linux side in the naming debate, but just "Fedora" instead of tempting fate by mentioning linux is a nice compromise.)

I'm a complete noob to Linux. At work I decided I want to use Ubuntu a) to have an easy start into Linux Distros and b) because my colleagues use it too.
Now I'm setting up Eclipse for my work, got it to run and PyDev so I can code and manage my projects. Since I'm working in a team, I need Subversion and this is where I'm having trouble. I installed eclipse-subclipse and libsvn-java and edited eclipse.ini so the java library path is correct and the VM can find libsvnjavahl-1.so (that was the first problem that I solved). Now in Eclipse when I go into Preferences -> Team -> SVN it should show me the installed version, but gives me an error message and tells me that the Subversion Native Library isn't available because the JavaHL library is incompatible -- Subversion 1.7.x is required.
Can anyone please help?

Also what the fuck why does 4chanX make the site look like I'm browsing on a gigantic iPhone? Why are there fucking UPVOTE buttons?

KDE3 was good. When I started using LInux, I was on KDE2. It was beautiful. KDE3 was just a polished KDE2. KDE4 and Plasma is where I said enough. I haven't looked at Plasma 5 but I might consider trying it out. I haven't used any DE in years.

I still miss my fuzzy clock. That thing was built for NEETs.

>>53807294

>>53807380
So I guess then sell me on MATE or Gnome 3. I have used Xfce for the short period of time between being disgusted by KDE4 and realizing that I don't need a DE at all, and what bothered me about Xfce were the visual ugliness (like the way it displayed the names of files on the desktop or the chunkiness of the panel) and very limited config tools. This was on Slackware, so IDK if that's just because it was vanilla and maybe a distro based entirely on Xfce would put effort into theming it and making it look nice and adding pretty GUI system management tools.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

You could just use openbox or cwm or something. They're fairly bare bones though.

It's not 2004 anymore, mate isn't good. Gnome has it's issues but is alright. 16.04 unity is nice. If you just want a complete distro that's nice out of the box, regular ubuntu is fine.

I'm mostly asking for someone else, a Linux beginner but not a total idiot (more like a total un-idiot). For the past five years, I've been using dwm and fluxbox on different machines. Since I'm going to be installing Linux for them and their primary means of (remote) support, I'm debating whether it's better to get them Xubuntu/some MATE/Gnome distro and they can try figuring it out for themselves, or be like: "This is fluxbox. It's really simple. If you want to add menu options or keybindings, just edit these text files. Here's my .conkyrc and some utility scripts I wrote for myself. Call me if you need anything."

I personally don't use GUI file managers or configuration utilities, but Thunar would work just fine in fluxbox too desu ka?

Sorry Kenny, but in his case he's not even fully aware of the ideologies. As in: he has no proof of them, except for memes spread on the internet. As far as software is concerned, the only relevant ideology that can apply is its license. Even if Debian is "SJW", it's irrelevant, because it's free software. I assume he doesn't have an aversion towards free software, since he's considering using an OS built around a kernel licensed as free software.
>>
>>53808669

What do you think you'll gain by switching to Arch? Note that Antergos isn't Arch.

>>
>>53808683
>Even if Debian is "SJW", it's irrelevant, because it's free software.
It's not irrelevant at all.
Taking SJW as shorthand for "pisses effort on an outreach program", it stands to reason you don't want to show implied support by using a distribution developed by these people.

Other completely irrelevant ideology can also apply. It's petty as fuck, but it's not completely irrelevant. I'd give consideration to swapping one piece of software for a comparable alternative if the developer expressed an alternative political view firmly enough to annoy me. (Because I'm a spiteful asshole, and while it'd do him no harm it would do numerous small things for me.)
>>
>>53808745
>rolling distro
there aren't really any significant benefits to this. if you constantly update packages as soon as they come out, you will inevitably run into dependencies becoming incompatible and then parts of your system will start to work funny. besides, most distributions (i assume most, Slackware certainly does) will keep at least one branch that receives new package updates rather than just security/bugfixes

>lots of help online
most other popular distros will have a large online support community, and the Arch wiki (as noted in OP) provides a general enough explanation of most topics to be useful for any distro.
>problems you find usually are solved in the same manner as in regular arch?
this would only matter for problems that are specific to arch, which arise from arch's sometimes eccentric solutions to non-problems that then necessitate actions you would not have to do on a different (sane) distro. choosing to use something on the basis of it's faults seems kinda retarded to me desu

continuing from my first post, I've installed KDE, but I'm not yet as cool as Tyrell.
In case anybody cares, my mini-review of Plasma 5.4: it's ok, but GNOME seems to be a lot more stable. Got a random crash 5 minutes in and when I started Amarok half it's scripts broke (why were they even enabled from the beginning..).
as someone transitioning from Windows or looking for thousands of customization options I would be happy though.
Oh, and it's impressive that it's so bloated it has it's own bootsplash.

Does KDE not have an American English package? I'm trying to install it for the first time and all I can see is a British English option.
>>
>>53808980
Yeah KDE has been like that since Plasma came out. It's a shame, because it was the best DE hands down, partly because it was developed by an actual company, and partly because it was from the time before OSX and Vista came and started changing the "classic" desktop paradigm and style. You can try Trinity/TDE if there is a package for your distro, but I haven't had much success with mine (Slackware) either building or using precompiled binaries.

Plasma is KDE's unified DE architecture/WM, akin to Windows Aero/Metro/whatever they have now.

Before KDE4, all the different components of KDE were just that - different components. So you had the window manager, the panel, etc., all as different applications that communicated with each other. Plasma was a total rebuild that tried to unite everything under one core process, but in doing so it focused a lot on eye candy and widgets. As a result, it has had stability problems, forever AFAICT, usually because if one thing goes they all go.

yeah, KDE is designed to be used as a whole and if you're not using KDE as your DE/"GRAPHICAL SHELL" then you shouldn't use anything related to KDE at all because it will automatically start a bunch of servers and daemons so that the KDE program thinks it's in a KDE session.

I just want to clarify that as a former user and lover of KDE, if she ever wanted me back and could prove that she was mature, stable, and not unreasonably demanding, I'd invite her over in an instant for some DRM-free video entertainment and chill. I'm very sad that she turned into such a cunt.

the default gtk2 file picker that my firefox uses shows previews in the right pane. if you have so many images to scroll through that you can't handle going one by one, a better and more platform-independent solution would be to organize your files better, for example in a multi-level hierarchical directory structure grouped by use or mood or character, using hard links when necessary to facilitate sorting images that could belong in more than one directory.

in other words, what >>53809529 said.
using the file system as an intuitive, application-independent database structure is about as Unix-way as you can get, and it will make your computer use more efficient and practical

>>53809543
you don't have to rename them as long as you group them into directories where at most you have to scroll through 5-10 to find the one you need.
