The 3000 had a bad capacitor somewhere and would randomly shut off, then it shut off during a firmware flash. Bricked. Now I'm down to a single 2000 which I can't remember what was wrong.

You need a flash cart such as an R4. Recently the Supercard DS TWO came out which is compatible from DS all the way up to 3DS so get that IF YOU CAN. It's sold out everywhere. Otherwise just about any NDS flash cart will work. Check out the GBAtemp forums, there are probably some suggestions.
Once you have the flash cart you just copy-paste some firmware files and soem ROMs onto a microSD card and pop it in.
