Why not just cut of the USB connector, strip the wire, and plug it directly in?

Generally a terrible idea.
If anything goes wrong in the power circuitry for them then the wallls on fire and they're always powered, unlike your standard jacks.
>>
>>53795554
good idea if it actually works. i watched a youtube video about them and for some reason when there was only one device plugged into one of the ports the power was flickering on and off and android phones wouldnt take it. was fine with two things plugged in though.

Are there any usb power outlets with surge protection for the usb?
>>
If you could make a LAN out of USB wall outlets these things would be GOAT.
>>
>>53795554
Shitty idea. Reasons:
>USB is not around forever
>Needs some circuitry that can break easily

Also, who needs that many USB ports ready. I honestly only need one for my phone. The cable + adapter is always plugged in so I only need to plug in my phone in the evening. I don't know anybody who searches for an USB port every evening or something.

eh, put one or two in spots they'll be used regularly. theyre only $30-ish each. 5 years from now replace them with usb c or whatever the new standard is
>>
Why not just use an adapter?
>>
>>53796463
>Only moving parts can break

You don't charge your phone with 230V/50Hz AC (or whatever your country uses). The transformation requires some circuitry that doesn't have infinite lifetime.
>>
It's not a bad idea + doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to swap out your current outlet with these. Newer power strips come with USB ports for charging as well.

>>53795785
you mean like ethernet outlets???? That's already a thing they are all over campus

Yeah I bought a couple for my place. Fast charging working confirmed on apple and android. Charges usb headset at 5v 1.0a safely as well. This is the only brand that had the fast charging. It's not a meme.
>>
>>53795652
I'm sure your phone won't notice a difference between 8v/1.5a dc and 120v/15a ac.
>>
We have all seen usb chargers for Apple and other devices explode, melt or burst into flames.

You're basically putting one of those inside your wall socket. Even better, they're fucking generic designs.
Compare an Apple charger to a fake Apple charger. Apple's charger has a lot more circuitry for things like current and overload sensing.
You'll be lucky if your jack mounted usb chargers have any of that shit in them. Plus they constantly consume power even while nothing is plugged into them.
>>
>>53796513
He meant power + data transmitting (in this case an internet connection) usb ports.
>>
>>53795818
The concept is you can charge your phone and shit while freeing up power plugs whatever else. This way you're not dedicating a wall outlet just to your USB charging.
>>
>>53796559
>Phone chargers do not fail within your lifetime
Usually the cable craps out from being bent and twisted so much. I've had both hardwired ones and USB adaptor ones crap out left and right. Maybe if untouched they won't but with average wear and tear most don't last a year
>>
Needs a teardown to see internal circuitry. You'll either get a shitty chinese design with no protection or get a nice quality one. Not all charge circuit designs are the same.
>>
>>53795554

I've got a Belkin, the type that screws over the existing jack. It's worked great for several years, but doesn't supply enough juice to charge my newish Lumia 640 reasonably fast.
>>
>>53796731
The CABLE can fail, not the transformer. And if you have ever broken a fucking usb cable you can go back to making those garbage fucking threads about it to make shit up.
>>
>>53796720
I literally have free USB ports on my stereo, my computer, my laptop, my display, my keyboard, my printer, there's even two in my power strip.

Nah m8, there are USB ports literally everywhere, don't need even more.
>>
I put a bunch on my house that I got from a local electrical trade store. Had them for about a year and used them to charge Nexus, OnePlus, iPad and iPhone devices with no problem. They're all 5V 2A.
>>
>>53796802
Right, same here. And I agree. However I waited until the fast charging came out on them. Instead of having more 5v 1.0A shill usb outlets. And not taking up needed plugs where my waifu and I commonly charge our devices. Like in the kitchen or my bedroom. I like my phone going from 20% to 85% in the time it takes to take a shower.

See>>53796676
>>
>>53796757
The transformer can fail if there's a power surge or something like that. It can also just fail spontaneously
>>
>>53795712

You either have Apple cables, or you're doing it wrong.

I've literally only ever had one USB cable fail, and that was from keeping it crumbled up in a small pocket.
>>
>>53795616
>deprecated

That's the only flaw.

Should be very efficient in combination with solar panels and batteries.
I really hope USB (type C) will become the standard power input for all lighting and small home appliances.
>>
>>53796937
Shit happens. You can't always control that stuff. Lightning can hit your house and fuck up electronics too. Point being electronics can fail unexpectedly even if you don't think they can.
>>
>>53796974
Why are you so against 120V?
>>
>>53797148
So why are you still on your computer?

Shit could happen and kill you.
Why aren't you living in the woods, far away from any "dangerous" technology?
>>
>>53797191
That's a nice unrelated point to avoid admitting you're wrong about transformers not being able to fail
>>
I prefer to mount USB-equipped power strips to the edges of tables. More convenient. Outlets are always too low and behind furniture.
>>
>>53797283
He was someone else. I am the person who called you out on your stupid bullshit.

Of course they CAN fail, but these things are reliable and I was simply saying the person who said they could 'easily break' was a fucking moron.
>>
>>53797283
wasn't me who claimed that.

Everything can fail.
Doesn't mean it will kill you.
Electrical fires are extremely rare apart from illegal marijuana farms.
>>
>>53797347

Why yes, yes we do.
And before you ask anything, they are all rated to a certain watt rating.
If the total number of device's power draw exceeds that rating then you'll probably fry the thing.
>>
>>53797725
Adding to this, the outlet assumes you're already carrying the usb cable. Why not just carry the adapter too and stop being a lazy retard?

Did you mean "Mains Sockets"?
>>
mfw the point of these is to keep your main plugs free and people seem to forget that
>>
>>53798009
We just don't use that term in the US. When someone says mains here they would think you are talking about the main circuit breaker.
>>
>>53795554

if our phone doesn't support wireless charging.. you need a new fucking phone.
>>
>>53796712
I saw a breakdown of one of these outlets by an electrical engineer. He pretty much agreed with what you said. Most of these outlets are Chinese shit. In one case only one of the usb ports would work at a time because they were implemented so poorly. A high quality version could be made but I don't know if they exist. At this point it might be worth it using USB Type C, which really should be a universal standard for low voltage devices, not just computing devices since it can put out up to 100 watts.

imagine a bedside table with a lamp and some other thing (laptop, electric blanket, humidifier, powertool dildo, etc) taking up both regular AC outlets. you have too much good taste to stick a power bar beside your bed. because you're also a goddamn baller-ass millionaire, you can afford a dedicated charging cable to go into a $30 outlet with a usb port that took you 3 minutes to install one rainy saturday afternoon

>>
>>53795554
Fuck these shitty things. Low current, shitty power output (lots of noise) and are probably unsafe. Plus output coding matters if you want to charge a device quickly.

Get something like

https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10015204/3785600-authentic-aukey-pa-t2-quick-charge-2-0-3-port-usb

and you can have automatic coding up to Apple 2.4A (and everything in between), plus Quick-charge 2.0 on one port.
