Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

help /flt/ gnome is kaput

Pretty much every other WM/DE works but GNOME, the one I want to use, just goes to a screen that says "Oh no something has gone wrong" with a logout button.

I've spent the better part of five hours trying to fix this but nothing works.

Arch Linux. What do?

My rxvt-unicode journey has ended. Once I was done, I realized that there were no gains or advantages over my old xfce4-terminal.

>had to manually compile and keep track of updates, so i can enable the custom icon option
>no difference in terms of space consumption or dependencies
>getting tab functionality either required using an additonal package (tmux) or settling for a slightly worse version
>getting the same visual glitch (prompt disappears at certain times)

Found your problem

So many broken packages in their repo..
>>
>>53794005
That's what happens when you use what the other cool kids use just because it's popular.
>>
>>53794022
Thanks for posting, but you didn't really help me.
Arch is actually the first distro I could even get to install on this machine. openSUSE, my usual go-to distro for trying out new stuff, couldn't even boot the installer.
>>
>>53794051

That wasn't really the case. I thought it would fix that annoying disappearing prompt issue.

Tell me more about your problem. What happens exactly?
>>
>>53794171

The PS1 prompt just disappears and the whole thing becomes black. I think it's a known bug, because I've seen other people complain about it too. No solutions though.
It happens when I unmaximize the window after it was maximized. It's not a big issue, since I just have to start typing for the prompt to appear again.
>>
How can I install debian if I need the nonfree firmware to connect to the repos and install the nonfree firmware? Could I install with the nonfree firmware netinst, and then use a debian live cd to chroot in and install linux-firmware-nonfree?? Does it work that way?
>>
>>53793949
Well after about five hours of trying to fix it I finally got it.

Turns out that it actually WAS a driver issue. Xrandr was only seeing my intel chip but installing and setting up Bumblebee to work with both xf86-video-intel and nvidia caused everything to magically start working.

Fucking Arch, always coming around in the end. God I love this distro.
>>
>>53794116
no, not really

like with everything, providing hosting services gets cheaper the more of them you're able to provide.

how many machines you got?

how good connection youre able to get to your house/garage?
>>

put the firmware on a usb drive
>>
>>53794223
Mh, check out these settings:

shopt -s checkwinsize
so it redraws at every resizing

and

stty -ixon
stty -ixoff
to disable ^s/^q

My 2 cents.
>>
>>53794285
If you're using bash or anything with readline, the stty stuff isn't necessary. readline does it by itself.

If you ever start to find it annoying, search for cork in your pulse config and comment it out.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, Windows/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Windows plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Windows system made useful by the NT corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by Microsoft. Many computer users run a modified version of the Windows system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Windows which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Windows system, developed by Microsoft. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. NT is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the Windows operating system: the whole system is basically Windows with Linux added, or Windows/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of Windows/Linux.

Hi all, I need some help and am new to debian.

I need some firmware that's non-free, but don't want to go through the trouble of re-installing the whole OS, just to get some drivers. I'm rather new, so I was wondering if there was anything I could run to get these drivers from an image, and maybe some technical explanation of how it works.

Stupid question: I've been messing around with trying to get Manjaro to work and could not for the life of me get the graphics drivers to work (I will try again in the future, maybe this weekend). I had a working Mint install and just formated the root partition and replaced it with Manjaro Cinnamon. My concern is now that I have yet again formated my root partition and put Mint back, is it possible some config files in my home partition could cause issues in the future because changes were made by the Manjaro install, or am I just being paranoid?

Also is it even worth changing to Manjaro? I've been using *buntus and Ubuntu derivatives on and off for a few years now and have had no problems with them.

And so the storm was unleashed.

In all seriousness, Linux is a sort of clone to UNIX.

Unix: Linux is too devolved to be considered Unix
gnu:A man in his 40's thought he was a big part of the internet world, and wanted to claim another mans work for 30 years, he of course had the minority vocal 1% support,so the joke became from this mans inability to produce anything in 30 years time, other then sucking the credit from Linus
Linux: The name Linus(the creator of Linux) decided to name is program.

1. Yeah, absolutely. GNOME works great on Wayland (often even better than X). There's also a few meme WMs that try to be special snowflakes, and a couple i3 clones.

2. Depends on whether or not you find GNOME easily customizable.

3. What do you mean "run commands directly?" Awesome has Mod+R, which is deprecated, and Mod+P which is just dbus with some intelligent filtering. Unless you're referring to something I don't know about.

didn't KDE have a wayland support too ?

2. Depends on whether or not you find GNOME easily customizable.
For this part I was really thinking of a WM. I find it stupid to be forced modifying lua scripts and learning a whole API to achieve what you want to do, or having to look on the internet for other users scripts.
You end having something confy, but not worth the time spending on it for me.

>>

1. I think so, yeah. I've only ever used GNOME, Weston, and one of those i3 clones though so I didn't want to get your hopes up.

2. If you found Awesome too intensive, you're not really going to find anything that's easy but also configurable.

3. Yeah that's Mod+P, which is literally just dmenu2 combined with the mainmenu applications. You can easily get that in any DE/WM but manually setting a keystroke combination to launch dmenu2.

So, like, majority of my co-workers at my new job are using some distro of Linux. It's an android/iOS app development company. They don't care what OS we use, unless you're on the iOS team in which case they prefer you to at least have your own macbook.

Right now I'm running Windows 10. I'm not overly attached to it and all I do is code and play TF2. Is linux (any distro) inherently better to code with for app development?

Every Linux distro is light years ahead of Windows in terms of development.
So much so that it doesn't really matter what distro you use because for the most part the software they run is the same. I'd just stick with openSUSE at first.

It depends if you want to have it as a backup or propagate it to multiple machines, how different those machines are, etc.

In easiest case you just make a disk image of your root partition (or a tarball)
