As far as I've seen the GTA04 board is the closest thing we have to an open source phone today. The Modem is the only blobbed hardware and it is setup with kill switches and voltage monitors so you can tell if its activating without you knowing. Also its not connected straight to the cpu and memory...
I love OSS but its worthless if your hardware is bending you over the night stand.

I discovered them last week and noted the slow development (and have investigated price.)
They are still releasing info and talks. It sounds like this is the best option so far as far as componates go, they are still adding and updating stuff. Obviusly production cost is gonna be high.
Are you aware of alternatives. I feel this falls under products like the Libreboot x200, older hardware but as open as possible. I would pay to have a product start open as oppose to being dragged in the mud to freedom.

Now, I cannot attest to the scammer situation. It seems clear to me they are not promising anything. I was in IRC and someone did bring up the last leader ripping people off. These new guys are very transparent it looks like, and dedicated to the community.
Sorry about your misfortune though, I havent givin a large donation to these guys yet. I would put 1200 down for a finished product though. Thats the only thing holding my back is being ripped off a half dozen times by early access games...
