Why programming? There is a whole array of industries that are much more male-oppressed:
* mining
* HVAC repair
* rescue

On the other side, there are occupations that are female-dominated:
* education

Why not push for more gender diversity in these professions instead?

Well, if you let the unwashed masses freely choose their jobs then they will end up concentrating on a handful of jobs. According to supply and demand this means jobs like nurses are being paid lower than average. In theory a rational economic actor would always choose the best paying job they can learn. Somehow software engineering or stem in general is being percieved as uncool. So you need some advertising to make software engineering cool and cool again. But why this industry? Obviously companies are heavily sponsoring these camps or events because the job demand is higher than supply in this industry.

Is it? To me programming looks like a very safe & lucrative occupation, especially so when compared to mining or tree logging. It looks like women try to push their way into easy&good paying jobs using their "gender imbalance" discourse, while ignoring harder jobs. Getting the opportunities without taking the obligations, so to say.

Looks totally unfair to me, honestly.

Why do women even want to do a lot of these jobs though? it's not that women are shunned in those jobs, it's that most women aren't interested in them because they're too physically or mentally demanding, and women don't have the same motivations as men do. Same reason men don't want to go into nursing generally, because they are less nurturing in their nature.

I'm all for gender equality but I'll never understand why feminists insist that there has to be a perfect gender balance in all industries and in all governments and in family life.

now people like karlie kloss are telling women that they SHOULD be entering male dominated field, but did they ever stop to think that they're male dominated for a reason? Like the fact that the hours are anti-social, it requires vast amount of intricate knowledge of computer systems etc. Like there's a reason most programmers are autistic spergs, why would a woman want to be associated with that in any way?

Call me a chauvinist but I maintain that programming is not a good profession for most women, same as its not suitable for most men.

I'm not him, but as far as I can tell he didn't say that, he just said girls aren't interested in being 'coders'. You think it's because they're told that they can't be coders by society. I think it's because they're bad at logic (as demonstrated by your post) and so aren't naturally inclined to be interested in an activity that requires a lot of logic. There are exceptions and those women are welcome to contribute to the field, but there doesn't need to be a special effort made to get more women into tech.

I think pushing women into STEM alone is a bad idea, but I get the idea behind it. Women are currently socialised from a young age to prioritise relationships, feelings, people, fashion, art, etc. much more than young men are. Young men, on the other hand, tend to be more encouraged towards building things. These are reflected in the majors that men and women choose -- women tend to choose fashion, art, psychology, sociology, writing, etc. because that's what they were raised to prioritise. Men choose programming, engineering, mathematics, and hard sciences because the way they were raised tends to encourage an interest in those areas.

Pushing women into STEM does not solve the root of the problem; we should instead focus on trying to introduce girls to logic, to building things, etc., and an increase in women in STEM will follow. I think that's what KodeWithKlossy is trying; introduce these teenagers to programming to try to get them interested early, but I don't think that's early enough for a lot of girls. If you're a 17 year old girl, your mind will mostly be set in its ways.

And why would any of us not want women to be more logical and more like men? They're half of the world! Like it or not, women influence how the world operates; they have voting rights and power nowadays and it's detrimental for them to be raised so differently from men.

>Most grade schools have never taught programming

I've actually noticed that immediately after the dot com crash that schools began to drop programming or computer classes in general.

I wasn't sure whether it was related to the fact that IT skills suddenly looked less important, or they assumed that kids were teaching themselves computer literacy on their own time better.

Anyway, it seems the coding classes are back, but you have to do it out of school time now. I kind of think this is a good thing considering that kids are less computer literate than they were ten years ago.

Anybody that thinks that this is going to end up with a flood of programmers is delusional though. It's the same like teaching physics at school would flood the market with physicists. All this is is a counter to the decline of computer literacy.

I'm honestly happy that Kloss even knows what hello world is because it means she can actually appreciate the difference between an total beginner programmer and a professional.

Because programming is neither physically demanding or necessarily requires insane work hours, but programmers are still relatively respected in society and are paid relatively high wages. That's not true for any of your examples. And what's your point anyway? there are people on /g/ who've spent their entire lifetime around computers, their inner working, languages, etc and create cool stuff.

What's wrong with "learn some code" though?

What's wrong with learning to code as a hobby, not to be a professional coder?
What's wrong with learning to draw as a hobby, not to be a professional illustrator?
What's wrong with learning to play an instrument as a hobby, not to be a professional musician?
What's wrong with learning to speak another language as a hobby, not to be a professional linguist?
All those professionals spent just as much time and energy on their interests as you did on yours, so HOW DARE amateurs disrespect those professionals by being amateur???

Most of the beneficiaries of Karlie's scholarship program will likely never code at the professional level, but I still think it's nice to see them learn a new skill as a hobby.

And if they ever do decide to move on the professional level, well, this brings them one step closer to that goal, so good for them.
