Free Software has come along way. If you need it for business, libreoffice is just as good as Microsoft Office. If you need it for research, the vast majority of research and software for research is done on it. If you need it for desktop, steam is on linux and has a pretty large library already, and it will only grow. There really is no reason not to use linux anymore. The functional requirements are there.
