Didn't see one so I figured I'd start one. I pirated a copy of Skyrim and I can either run it in full screen that's too big so the bottom bar gets cut off, or too small in windowed mode. When I try to alter skyrimprefs.ini, it won't let me. I'm using windows 10. How do I fix my resolution? Is there a separate program I could use to force the program to fit my monitor? My resolution is 2560x1080.
>>
>>53775666
>My resolution is 2560x1080
I'm guessing this is your problem. That's not a 16:9, 16:10 or 4:3 res. Does it run at 1920x1080 with vertical bars?
>>
Would you dual-monitor 144hz screen as a main screen and then a 60hz monitor as a secondary?

Also, opinions on curved monitors?

When do the new mid range AMD/Nvidia cards come out? My 7870 died yesterday so I want a new card ASAP but if there's good mid-range stuff coming soon I'll wait.
>>
>>53775808
It does. I just hoped I could run my game normally. Figure when I use the startup to determine the best settings for my computer, it'll run and fill the screen, but the bottom edge is cut off. I've been googling since yesterday and none of the fixes have helped, so I might just have to find a program to increase the resolution in windowed mode.

I just bought an AMD A10 7850K, what intel cpu is it comparable with ?
>>
>>53775851
I'm guessing the UI is not designed for wider-than-wide resolutions.

>>53775831
Absolutely, why not? Refresh rates don't need to be the same between screens.

Curved always seemed gimmicky to me, and like it creates a sweet spot and is just distorted if you're outside the sweet spot.

>>53775940
There's not a really great comparison since that CPU's deal is many slower cores. It outperforms an i3 4160 on multicore, but the i3 beats it by a similar percentage on single core.
>>
my cpu: xeon e3-1230 v3
my gpu: Radeon HD 7950 PCS+

can run pretty much every gaym on 1080p 60fps high/ultra but The Division doesn't even run on medium settings without huge fps drops

also planning to play dark souls 3 and all the other shit that will come out in future

should I get something like the r9 390 nitro or should I wait for polaris (? whatever that is)

some guys tell me I shouldn't "waste" my money right now for this one gaym and wait a few months for the polaris shit

Recently built a desktop with only one 1TB hard drive. Installed Windows 7 onto it to play games, but I really haven't been playing too much and I have better things to do. I want to go back to Debian but I don't want Windows and Linux on the same hard drive because I'm a tinfoil hat enthusiast. I'm also too much of a kike to buy another hard drive because I'm a student and I only make $200 a week. Can I just make a recovery point and keep my Win 7 disk/activation number with no worries of having to buy another copy. I really don't know too much about Wangblows and I just wanna go back to Debian 'cause it's comfy.

How does Polaris 11 compare to the current cards in terms of performance class?
>>
>>53776159
Depends how sensitive you are I suppose. I don't really mind some differences myself. When I dock my laptop, I have a large monitor with the laptop screen to the left and an old VGA CRT to the right. They're all a bit different DPI and the CRT has a higher refresh rate than the others. Probably the most jarring bit is differences in color temperature though -- the laptop's IPS panel is slightly on the warm side, the TN monitor is a little on the cool side, and CRT is, well, glowy, bright, less crisp and puts the other two to shame on black and contrast levels.

I don't mind screens being different so long as I don't try to put a window spanning between them.

>>53776185
You doing more single or multi core tasks? It will depend on that. Also whether you care about the iGPU, which is considerably better than you'd get in an i3 but obviously still not really suitable for much in the way of gaming.

But yeah if you're coming from a Core 2, the A10 is going to feel like a formula one racecar.

Anybody know off the top of their head how to add vp8/vp9 to ffmpeg on linux? I installed it last night and hadn't thought about it.

Am I really going to have to remove it, download it again, and compile it with new options?
>>
I'm tired of my glossy, IPS monitor since the reflections and glare are starting to get on my nerves.

Until I can sell this will screen protectors help me out or will it ruin my image quality? If everything gets a tad darker or the image is slightly worse I'll be fine.

>>53775884
You can look at a 960 2GB, my 660 is still keeping me comfortable though I think it will start being even more obsolete soon, and I usually turn down post processing, motion blur and such. It may not be the best but that's off the top of my head.

You need to specify "-codec libvpx", in case you were trying to type "-codec vp8"

It's the same with MP3, where you need to write "libmp3lame" instead of just "mp3".

It sounds like a reasonable upgrade. It looks like you'd be able to play at least some games. I don't know how balanced an A10 7850K and a 750ti would be, but it sounds reasonable.

Given that you're looking to use it mostly for Photoshop, the A10 looks like a reasonable value since it'll be almost all multicore workloads, which is that CPU's strong point. Obviously a stronger CPU would be better still, but it sounds like it's not in your budget. Passmark does suggest you'd get better performance for less money with an FX-6300 though.

BTW, you can get comparisons of just about any pair of CPUs by googling something like "A10 7850K vs E6750".

>>
>>53776829
I don't recognize either laptop, but the size of the actual laptop shouldn't matter

I say take both apart and attempt to move the processor. Don't force anything when taking the cpus out or putting it in, there's a good chance of soldered cpus/different pin counts
>>
>>53776731
This is more a function of drivers than DEs. X11 is a bit of a clusterfuck in terms of getting vsync working well. But Nvidia drivers seem to manage it through a bit of hackery, while AMD drivers just throw their hands up and give you tearing regardless of your vsync setting.

Hey I bought this used "surface pro 2" on ebay for a reasonable amount of money but I'm lead to believe it's not a surface pro because the windows logo isn't right above the keyboard(it's next to the charger), the charger isn't the normal charger you see on window's surfaces (it's a normal Samsung charger that most smart phones use) and on the back of the device it has a windows logo and it doesn't say surface.
Should I send it back to the seller and ask for my money back ? I'll include the sellers listing just in case I misunderstood something

The IPS technology doesn't make them any glossier than any other monitor, and like everything else they come in glossy and matte varieties. I'm guessing people are seeing more reflections because the blacks are darker, while a shitty TN would drown out some of your reflection with backlight bleed.

If it bugs you, get a matte one. The coating really doesn't hurt image quality unless you get one that's so shit that the coating makes sort of an RGB grain effect. I think people mostly associate matte with poor image quality because matte is most common on business laptops, which often get crap panels because who needs beautiful color reproduction on their spreadsheet? Glossy panels are more common in consumer laptops designed for movies and sold in stores where a shit panel would look really bad next to the other laptops and sell poorly.

Forewarned, this post has words that /g/ considers to be cancer.

So I just switched over to Windows 10, and since I prefer the iPod touch (I like having a separate player for my music) I installed iTunes and use it to manage my music. I've noticed though that for some CDs that I rip iTunes can't find the album artwork/won't update the album artwork. This is confusing, since for the same albums I can look them up on the iTunes store and sure enough they are there with said album artwork. I am in the middle of ripping around 300 CDs, and while I could download, store, and update the artwork for those iTunes can't find, I do find it odd.

I also did double check to make sure the album name and band spelling is correct as well to make sure it matches. The thing is that it finds the album names and info just fine.

Is this a known problem or a recent thing?

Overclocking isn't really my thing, and I was messing around with the overclocking settings in the "AMD Settings" program. after clicking "apply" screen went black, buzzing sound through speakers.

I have restarted, removed the card, reinstalled the card, attempted to uninstall and reinstall the drivers, which failed. Safe mode still works, so the card isn't fried. I tried moving Profiles.xml and WSProfiles.xml from C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE to the desktop to force a new profile to be created, but that hasn't worked either.

Safe mode works just fine, but I cannot access most drivers in safe mode. Any hardware identification drivers, including the ones that the AMD drivers use to install themselves, won't run in safe mode. If I boot normally I might or might not get as far as typing my password before it crashes with black screen and buzzing. I cannot access "AMD Settings" to undo the changes.

Yes. Every little request to the disk for some trivial little file or a page that was moved to swap takes longer, and likely waits in a queue of other requests as well.

Check the detailed status of the drive's SMART. Defraggler can display this along with other tools. Also check performance with CrystalDiskMark.

Unlocker seems to fail to find anything sometimes in my experience. Another thing to try is Process Explorer. Find->Handle or DLL, type in "sizer.dll" and see if it finds anything with it open. From there you can either kill the process or close the handle. Closing the handle might cause the process to behave strangely or crash, but if it's something with no legit reason to still have this file open, it's probably just a handle it forgot to close and it's safe to simply close the handle and leave the process running.

If he wanted to reformat the computer he made a good first step. Next thing to do is put in a Windows DVD.

If he bought the computer with Windows pre-installed, pirate a **clean** DVD of the exact same edition it came with. MD5sum the iso and google the sum to see that it's a clean MSDN or DigitalRiver source. Install that and it should pick up the key embedded in the BIOS and be a fully legit licensed Windows. If it prompts for a key, see the sticker on the bottom/side of the computer.

Hello, I have a noob question that I've posted yesterday and gotten some harsh criticism for not knowing better.

So, my friend that studies computer science recommended me code academy to start and learn a little bit about programming. I learned HTML in their course and tried Python, etc.. and found it very useful, because I actually learned something and know how to make at least website after enrolling in this for 2 days (at least on beginner level).

I come here, ask about it, and of course everybody starts saying to kill myself, strangle myself with ethernet cable, etc.. even though I find it good for me.

Other recommendations were to read SICP or attend edX computer science course to learn more, even though it is more video based and harder.

Now I have no problem with studying, but I do want to know some personal information on how you started so I don't have to kill myself for not knowing better anymore.

I will complete the code academy course anyway, because fuck it, I like it to be honest as a total beginner. However, I would appreciate recommendations.
>>
>>53782239
Most likely not. Also 1 MB is big enough that you should probably use a blob rather than an ungodly long base64 data URL.

550W is fine, though if you're overclocking I'd lean on the side of 600W, even then you're best off getting a PSU that's a couple hundred watts better than you need for peak efficiency.

>Computer engineering vs computer science vs electrical engineering

Electrical engineering: Circuit analysis and design, including both analog and digital, though I'd probably expect an emphasis on digital these days. All hardware, a lot of it not even computer.

Computer engineering: Designing computer hardware and making firmware for it. It's a specialty within EE, but EE alone won't teach you enough computer specific stuff to do this. Mostly hardware at the chips and wires level, with a small touch of software.

Software engineering: Designing software, generally in a corporate environment, with an emphasis on the process of writing formal specs, class design, collaborating with a team on large projects, and writing the actual code. All software, generally at the application level.

Computer science: Analyzing and designing algorithms, then proving mathematically that they will always produce the correct result and perform at a certain level. This sits sort of between software and math.
>>
>>53782364
CS focuses on computers, algorithms, boolean algebra, programming language syntax/structures etc
EE is more focused on circuit theory, physics, hardware/electronics
CE is a combo of both, but generally pretty similar to EE

All of them will deal with programming to some extent, EE least so. It really varies by school though.

Thank you guys! I knew I could count on the techies of 4chan to solve it.

HTMLCanvsEelment.prototype.toBlob

Am I doing something incredibly wrong here?

So I want end up as a programmer for big companies, which one should I pick to get my college degree in?

Basically it's not a health or allergy issue, I just want to have to dust all my stuff way less often. So if I bought a HEPA filter purifier for $100-ish it would do that? Overkill is good in the sense that I want it to reduce dust as much as possible in the room.

A couple things to consider are that a HEPA filter will reduce the overall CFM but capture virtually all dust
If you do get a HEPA filter make sure to get a model with a reusable filter.

I learned to code in college. I really don't feel you can get enough to be useful beyond the "I can paste together examples from stackexchange and prod at it until it sort of works" level in the time these code academy things give.

I would generally recommend a mix of edX and online tutorials if you want to learn on your own, at your own pace. Depending what you want to do, there's a lot of different areas you can study -- anything from asm and reverse engineering for malware analysis (Art of Assembly, then grab OllyDbg, Ida and some crackmes), to web design (w3schools and such).

If you want a more structured learning environment, there are versions of many online courses where you turn in assignments and get feedback and grades. Or sign up for actual courses.

Or stick with code academy and accept that you'll have to flesh out what it teaches you with your own exploration or any of the above. And drop it if the teachers suck.

So basically HEPA purifiers will work more slowly but more thoroughly? And it seems like pretty much all purifiers with decent reviews are HEPA anyways, even if it is overkill

there is software gimp and then there is hardware gimp

What exactly are you doing? If you're trying to dump things from a canvas based game or whatever, use code pasted into the js console, entered as javascript: URLs or stored in bookmarks. All that bypasses same-origin and effectively executes as if it loaded with the page in Firefox and Chromium.

"HTMLCanvsEelment" -- if you spelled it like that it's not going to be found. Instead try "HTMLCanvasElement.prototype.toBlob", which does exist in my Firefox.

/g/ always argues against CS but if that's really your main goal I'd say CS (or software engineering if that degree is offered) is the way to go.

CE/EE will give you a basic understanding of programming, but you'll ultimately end up writing shitty code for years until you learn the actual concepts/best practices through trial and error/exposure. The type of coding skills you'll gain from CE/EE probably won't transfer that well to working in a big company.

With CS you'll end up graduating with a few good projects to show off in interviews and you'll have experience in the software/tools used by most big companies.

Can someone explain why my file icons look bugged?

That would be software engineering.

I'm guessing you have a bed in there. Beds are dust factories. Wash the bedsheets weekly and vacuum reasonably often. It makes a pretty big difference in dust levels.
