He's a pathetic redneck with a huge ego. He's honestly convinced he's at least RMS or Torvalds caliber figure in the Free/Open Source movement, because he wrote fucking fetchmail (literally, his *only* technical contribution; I used in the 90's and it sucked massive cock) and a bunch of pretentious advocacy texts like "Cathedral vs. Bazaar".

This thread reminded me of an old web comics called "Everybody loves Eric Raymond" I used to read years ago (also featuring RMS and Linus). ESR was portrayed in it as a right-wing gun-loving delusional nutjob that he is.

>>
>Raymond is a member of the Libertarian Party. He is a gun rights advocate.[22] He has endorsed the open source firearms organization Defense Distributed, calling them "friends of freedom" and writing "I approve of any development that makes it more difficult for governments and criminals to monopolize the use of force. As 3D printers become less expensive and more ubiquitous, this could be a major step in the right direction."[23][24] In the midst of the hockey stick controversy on the origin and severity of global warming, Raymond opined that climate scientists have been bullied into pursuing a specific outcome.[25]

Try applying the basic principles of cybersecurity to America and you'll see the Constitution works as a massive backdoor to reactionary shit with its first and second amendments.

If you disagree then you should just go back to /pol/ and keep being irrelevant because the prevailing line of thought these days is massively progressive. I'll love to see your and /pol/'s tears when Congress passes provisions controlling guns and banning hate speech in our lifetime.

Last time the US defended my country was..... never, really. All they've done for us is selling us overpriced jet fighters that are subpar in comparison to jet fighters designed and built in the fucking 1970s and force us into participating in not one but two armed conflicts we didn't want any part of but "hurr durr you're our ally and we say you have to so you have to"

Ironic, isn't it? We've actually saved US' ass, and not the other way around.

And defend us from what? Your communist boogeyman that you created precisely so that you could obtain political influence? Under the pretense that you're "defending" us from it?

How about actual threats like fucking ISIS? Oh yeah I forgot, the ones fighting ISIS are Russia and North Korea, while you just keep sending them guns and training them!

No, Norway.

We have a bunch of F-16s which we bought from the US in the 70s and 80s. We recently bought a bunch of F-35s which are not only past due, they're also ridiculously overpriced and the worst part is that our F-16s have longer range and higher cruising speed than the F-35s.

And we're not getting the hi-tech radar prevention system stuff either, as we're not as good an ally as for example the UK.

Steve Jobs is overrated. He never wrote a single line of code.

Guys like Gary Kildall had a much greater role in enabling personal computing than ridiculous college drop-outs like Gates and Jobs, but they didn't get the fame because they were too busy actually doing science instead of marketing, and remain underrated and largely ignored to this day.

Some of his essays are quite interesting, especially The Cathedral and the Bazaar. He was a vocal proponent of open source software before it had a name, and he contributed to identifying and formalising OSS as an entity which could more realistically be pitched to coorporations than FOSS.

He talks himself up a lot but put a lot of effort into documenting hacker culture and has arguably made a solid contribution. He's pretty irrelevant these days though.

When your country has a GDP the same as the united States with he policies that you are currently enforcing, then we can start talking business, but as of right now, the US is the single country (single country does NOT include the EU) with the highest GDP in the world, why should we change to your likings? You want us all to be piss poor like you?

Sheer GDP isn't meaningful, GDP per capita is.

Not him, but free software and open source software are two different things, which is why there are historically two different terms to describe them.
