The only class that required Windows was my database class because we used SQL Server, though the professor wanted a more Linux friendly option but never had a chance to implement it for the course.

i use windows with a linux vm tbph. all my professors use word documents and powerpoints and other things that are very convenient for windows. oftentimes i develop in windows and then just move the files to my virtual machine to submit it. my university even provides virtual machines that connect to the university but it's terrible because of the latency so i installed virtualbox

With a cheap machine you can drag it anywhere and not worry if you drop it. You won't be able to play many games so you won't be distracted. Back up all your work to a network storage in case the hard drive fails.
Save your money for other things that matter. Spend it on a weekend trip, or a nice dinner with a girl. You'll be glad you did ten years down the road.

Ideally, you're gonna want to run Linux.
I'm right now working on my master's degree in computer science myself, and plenty of my instructors have designed assignments under the assumption that they would be fun either on the lab machines (which run Linux) or on a personal Linux machine.
Having access to package managers, and first class support from the most popular development tools is pretty important.
If you can't give up things like games, dual boot your laptop with Windows.
