Which is better for computer science in college, a MacBook or a Windows Laptop?

MacBook has no gaems therefore less distractions. Winner - MacBook.
>>
Mac isn't better for anything except looking like you have more money than sense.

Macbooks are overpriced and gay (duh). If you're in college you'll want to save as much money as you can so go with a windows laptop, particularly an A10 APU laptop if you want to play some vydia in low 720p settings every now and then.

Depends on what you do. Engineering? Clearly Windows. For everything else it doesn't matter, as you can always install Unix on your Windows Laptop. I happen to work in a department (physics) where everything is mac.
>>
>>53771395
literally nobody in my CS program uses Windows

Everyone uses either OS X or some Linux distro

When will this end?
99% of corporate coding jobs (those are the ones that actually make you a living) use Windows for software engineering and you'll have an easier time using IDEs like VS or Eclipse which both are the best on Windows.
>inb4 le server sysadmin maymay
Yeah knowing a few bash scripts and maintaing servers isn't real computer science.
>>
>>53771494
Mac OS X is unix-based.

It's not a bad choice for a CS student, but it's definitely better to just go with linux on a normal laptop.

I've heard good shit about MacBooks for CS. Of course, everyone is running at least a dual boot or full Linux. But, most industry stuff is still in Windows. So take your pick. Good time in school with adjustment period afterwards, or slightly tougher time in school that results in experience in an environment that employers find useful.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!
>>
Sigh. Another day, another thread full of fags who have never touched a Mac in their lives berating people for considering Macbooks.

OP, get the fucking Macbook. I'd recommend the 13" rMBP, it's the best value:money proposition Apple has going on right now, especially if it's going to be your only computer. Don't bother with Linux, you don't want to have to fix your computer when your assignment is due in four hours.

And don't forget your student discount. With Apple, the discount applies not only to the base build, but to any customizations as well.

You can get a 1440p laptop with a quad core i5 and an ssd for a lot cheaper. You can also buy a 500gb ssd and put it in the laptop, it'll still be cheaper than the macbook. Macbooks use flash memory btw, which is slower than a cheap ssd.

Thinkpad x220 w/ ips screen, additional 9cell battery, and running gentoo as your main os.

you have the option to dual boot w/ winblows if required for normie class requirements or to waste your time and potential playing gaymes like a manchild instead of learning and expanding your mind.

Pros:
-portable and lightweight.
-powerful for the price, i5- i7 options exist
-low cost, money saved can be spent on beer and trying to get laid, also if a nigger steals it because your college allows "diverse enrollment" and "students of color", you're only out a couple hundred bucks at the most as opposed to $1000+ for a macbook. Plus niggers are more likely to steal something shiny w/ an apple logo rather than a black nondescript thinkpad
- you can supposedly spill liquids on the thinkpad keyboard without frying your shit, this is good for college life.
-sturdy construction, will not break as easily as a fragile macbook. Also good for college life.

There's no reason for a CS major to buy a macbook other than mindless materialism and/or you are female and daddy will buy princess whatever she wants.

Like what? Have you ever heard of this great new thing called porting? You must be too new to know, but a long time ago Macs weren't x86, you know? And they won't be forever, nothing lasts forever, son. And the sun is setting for x86. Too bad really, it had a good run.

Also, even crappy cheap MIPS chips like Loongson's can run x86 code these days.

I find that hard to believe, normally when you develop software you need to test on all platforms, and since windows is the most widely used one, it would be foolish to ignore it.

You're delusional. It's true that something will eventually replace x86 but it sure as hell won't be ARM.

I never said it would be ARM, I just said it would be RISC. But how can you be so sure? As far as I'm concerned, ARM has a pretty good shot.

I'm not going to tell you which to choose definitively, but I will tell you not to buy a Macbook (or any laptop, really) with a HDD instead of an SSD.

So does ARM but you get what you pay for. In the end things like servers and super computer need the best energy efficiency and software support. Only x86 can offer that right now.

POWER is the only cpu architecture that can compete with x86 but will soon be phased out because of lack of software support. Sparc is a joke.

Unless people spontaneously start porting x86 software to POWER it's days are numbered.

This guy has no idea what he's talking about. Don't get a fucking Macbook. You're probably going into a significant amount of debt to attend university if you live in the States, and wasting money on a Macbook isn't a particularly good idea when you can do just as well with a much cheaper machine running GNU/Linux. It's 2016, you won't have to waste time fixing your computer just because it's a Linux machine. You can literally do everything you need for a CS degree on a used ThinkPad X200 without any problems whatsoever. You can even upgrade it to 8GB of RAM, an SSD, and get a new battery and still save a significant amount of money. Why the fuck would you waste money to get a Macbook when you don't need one?

Do you know what logical thinking is, or do you just shout shit and hope nobody notices that your thoughts lack a basic cause:effect relationship?

You'd have a point if you were complaining about 10 pound gaming laptops. Because even a drop from 10 to 5 pounds is a big deal. A drop from 4 pounds to 3 isn't a big deal at all, and a drop to 2 or less is basically "Okay, that's neat." However if you're saying the difference between carrying 4 pounds all day and carrying 2 pounds all day is backbreaking or some shit, I'm left to assume you have no fucking idea what you're talking about.

The fact that my entire post went above your head says enough. You completely ignored the fact that the difference between weights become less and less of an issue. A Windows laptop.

And not even a good one either. My suggestion would be the cheapest piece of shit you can find that will still run the programs you need to run to get your homework done.

With a cheap machine you can drag it anywhere and not worry if you drop it. You won't be able to play many games so you won't be distracted. Back up all your work to a network storage in case the hard drive fails.

Save your money for other things that matter. Spend it on a weekend trip, or a nice dinner with a girl. You'll be glad you did ten years down the road.

Ideally, you're gonna want to run Linux.

I'm right now working on my master's degree in computer science myself, and plenty of my instructors have designed assignments under the assumption that they would be fun either on the lab machines (which run Linux) or on a personal Linux machine.

Having access to package managers, and first class support from the most popular development tools is pretty important.

If you can't give up things like games, dual boot your laptop with Windows.
