This is Torvalds' workstation. He is able to do develop the Linux kernel with only one monitor thanks to the superior window management and virtual desktops in many Linux graphical environments.
Ever notice how wincucks always have two or three monitors?

He answers emails on the mailing list.

Sounds legit.
Atleast windows has a decent window management, you easily snap windows to sides of the screen without any hassle.
on OSX its a nightmare, you have to press and hold buttons and select shit.
Is that one of those standing desks?
How awful
All I'm getting is "linuxfags are poor, Winfags can afford two monitors because they get more work done".
>>53760481
It's a treadmill desk. Even worse.

OP is retarded, Torvalds runs OSX.

Torvalds is from a Socialist/Communist country...which is why Linux is communist.

At least you have virtual desktops and exposé. Also utilities like BTT add snapping features which are even better than Windblows
Linus has said himself that he barely codes now. He's full normie.

He doesn't work on the kernel much anymore. He just wrangles the retards on the mailing list and repo.

Treadmill desks are great. You're just a fat ass.
>>53760514
You're an actual idiot.
Programmers have very minimal working environment requirements, despite how fucking prissy they get about their text editors. Some (most) of the most influential software in the world was made with around 80 columns and 24 lines of monospaced text - and less.
You really don't need a huge screen unless you're a fan of OOP's ObnoxiousConventionFactoryProducesObnoxiousConventions.
>>53760445
Most linux users focused on work don't have brand new unsupported gaming graphics cards, so this isn't the case except for little skids who install it because they want to rice.

All you have to do is hunt for the title bar, drag it all the way to the side of the screen (and hold it in the correct place if you're using multiple monitors), hold it there for the correct amount of time, and then release. Then, you do the same thing for the other window. And of course there's only one partitioning scheme, and you have to do it every time you want this.
I have to do... literally nothing. Windows are automatically positioned and sized to make the most of screen space. I can't even PRETEND it's harder for the sake of sarcasm.
I'm talking of course about tiling window managers.
If you use the default window manager on OSX or Windows exclusively, you are like Tom Cruise from Minority Report but with downs' syndrome.
But I like more than one monitor.

OSXfag here. Managing windows, especially with 2 monitors is easy as shit.
Windows on the other hand I don't even know how to use.
>>53763244
damn nigga, u salty. Vertical screens have clear advantages in writing, reading, programming, and depending on the website browsing.
>It's not Linux it's GNU/Linux

Elite was coded on a 20 line BBC Micro.
>>53763136
>but then you want a different layout than the default one
>press and hold obscure key combos to resize and re-arrange windows
>WM might not even be capable of more complex layouts than master/stack and columns unless it's a manual tiler, which defeats the "LOL ITS AUTOMAGIC" point
Altair programmers used to hand assemble programs, then flip switches to input them in byte by byte.

>>53763136
>hunt
wow so hard to find the top of the window
>hold it there for the correct amount of time
No you don't, you just move and release the mouse
>hold it in the correct place if you're using multiple monitors
Not difficult since it provides a snapping area
Not to mention that there ARE shortcuts for all this. Windows+Left/Right will move windows to different sides. Up/Down gives you half height and maximizing/minimizing.
>>53763391
Congrats my friend, you have successfully memed!
>>53764062
That's great, but it's still infinitely slower and more annoying than a tiling WM. You'd know this if you'd ever actually tried at tiling WM.
>>53764062
You just fell for the vim fallacy
>poser vim user: YOU COULD, UGH, DRAAAAG THE WHOLE FUCKING MOUSE AFTER MOVING YOUR HAND A MILE AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD AND TRY AND CLICK ONE FUCKING PIXEL AND THEN MOVE TO ANOTHER FUCKING PIXEL LIKE A FUCKING NOSCOPE MOUSE SNIPER, JUST TO SELECT A RANDOM BLOCK OF TEXT TO COPY AND PASTE, AND THEN RIGHT CLICK BECAUSE RIGHT CLICK MAKES TOTAL SENSE UNLIKE Y FOR YANK AND SELECTED FUCKING COPY
>OR YOU COULD JUST TYPE ?FOO<RETURN>2FXV5TYJJJY WOW WASN'T THAT SIMPLE
>actual vim user: well dude i just used the mouse
>>53760442
It's like you're saying that a conductor has nothing to do with the music an orchestra is playing.
>>53764132
I've been using vim for development for the past 5 years and I've literally never used the mouse even once.
What the fuck are you talking about?
>>53764119
It sucks. The windows are always sized to fit the screen instead of their content. The more windows you have, the more precise control over the onscreen layout you need to keep them from shrinking or growing to sizes that severely hamper usability. It gets to a point where you are forced to organize a rigid "workflow" with dedicated workspaces and programs configured to open on those workspaces and fight against your own system when you want to do it differently one day (because you are not literally autistic and do not need routine to function).
If you do use a tiling WM, the best way is to use it in floating mode (awesome has very good floating support) and only tile when it fits the task at hand.
>>53764146
I've been using vim for development for the past 5 years and not only can my computer run an X server, but it has a pointer controller on the homerow and buttons below the spacebar, so I can use the mouse without losing out on the handful of milliseconds of valuable time it takes to move your hand three inches to the right and back.
>>53764132
this >>53764146
Yea, vim commands are hard to understand at first but it's an outright lie to say it's not faster and easier once you actually know what you're doing. The problem is actually investing the time to learn it. If you don't want to then fuck it, just use the mouse no one really cares.
>>53760445
>too poor to afford more than one monitor
>develop "free" virtual monitors
>>53764175
It's an outright lie to say "it's faster, period". The less rational your operation, the more significant the "stop and think" cost AND the longer your key sequence may be. There's a tool for every job. While the mouse may not be very good for selecting around the outermost parens of a large lisp function, it is great for selecting a snippet of this text for a quote like
>...the mouse may not be very good for selecting around the outermost parens of a large lisp function...
Which, from the end of "like", without excessive counting retardation and performed in one clean shot, would have been ?the mouse^Mv/function^Mw. If you have good motor skills, you can use the mouse much faster than you can think of proper endpoints that won't require any damn nN-ing and then type them. It's a visual motor skill, something [most] human beings are very good at.
But I guess /g/ hasn't played a video game since quake live dropped linux, so....
>>53762371
