Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Would I be able to put a w520 heatsink in a t520?

I swapped an i7 into a base model and if I enable hyperthreading temps will go through the roof. Without hyperthreading I'm getting beyond 95c on high loads.

My second idea was to water cool it since I can make a custom block, then have a bracket to mount the rad on the side. Would still be somewhat portable if I can find somewhere to get 12v from the laptop. But yeah swapping to w520 heatsink would be way better.

Does anyone have any experience with the x1 yoga? I was approved to receive a 2 in 1 for school and was told I could request a surface book if need be. I know the draws of ThinkPads are upgradability, build quality, and price. Well, 2 of those don't apply to the x1 yoga because it's new and the profile doesn't allow for upgradability. So does the build quality and design trump the surface book?

Read the guide but not looking for a used device ever. It just sketches me out let's leave it at that.

Somebody is most likely buying my PC this Friday for 1300. Possibly 14-1500 if he wants the sound system and monitor too. I need a laptop for college. I feel obligated to fall for the thinkpad meme. Going to college for Math major + CS minor for muh options.

What's the best thinkpad to get? Hoping for 8GB of RAM, SSD + HDD, 1080p and good battery life. If it has a 500gb ish SSD then no HDD required. Very flexible in the specs it just needs to have power and last me the next 4 years. Budget is 700-1100. A little more if absolutely necessary but I want to buy extended warranty and or insurance on it because I'm going to be broke in college.

What do you guys recommend? If you recommend I go elsewhere than lenovo then that's okay to.

I think syrupniggers on average pay just a bit more than we do here in the US in syrupshekels. If it isn't total bottom-barrel specs, then it's a fair price. Not great but fair.

I'll defer to a Canuck who has his finger on the pulse of the local market.
>>
>>53761830

Why? I've literally never had a good experience with used electronics ever.

I'm not rich. ~1400 is kind of pricey for me at the moment. Is there anything you could recommend in the 700-1100 range?

---mid edit---
So if most people here would prefer used, then at least give me a recommendation of which series to look at new. I just need a decent screen and good power. But above all I need it to last me the next 4 years.

If it is a 1600x900 screen then it's a good price. But honestly you're almost better off getting from eBay. I've seen people charging retarded amounts for Thinkpads here... like $400 syrupbux for a 1600x900 T420.

The exchange rate is actually pretty bad. I miss the Canadian Golden Age of buying online.

I got pic related for a little over $290 USD, fantastic deal you might say, but factor in the exchange rate and it ends up being closer to $390 CAD. I noticed when I plug it in the power light comes on, and then it turns off, and then it turns back on and stays on. If I turn it off after that, then when I turn it on again it just turns on one time.

Does that mean anything?

Man, government auctions can be so cash. I once bought a lot of ten T500s off the City of Owen Sound for about 200 Canadabux. Nobody else at the auction wanted them since they thought shit was all ancient. This was back in 2013 when they actually still had value as well. Since they were all 1280x800 screens I just kept my existing T400 and slowly got rid of them on Kijiji over the course of several weeks (mostly sold them to students in the city where I was going to university). Made about $2,300 doing that.
>>
>>53773916
I don't know what the fuck Lenovo was thinking by switching to the current form factor. They always had the enterprise market by the balls, and everyone who bought Thinkpads for personal use had nowhere else to go. Now that they've bent to the current trends, they've only succeeded in commoditising their product. We can get something similar from pretty much anyone.

I just found this thinkpad I've never seen before in my basement. Its acting really weird.

I boot it up, and it makes a beeping noise. Then a blank screen. I close the laptop, then open it and I see a BIOS menu, then it makes a rhythmic beeping noise then promptly goes away

What's going on?

What is /g/'s opinion on the new P series? Waste of money? How well does Intel HD 520 perform? I'm not buying the laptop for gaming but I'd like to be able to do something on it when I'm bored since I'm selling my PC.

Can it play battlefield 4 on low settings? What about the T460s? Can that do it? Probably play Minecraft, trials HD, battlefield and Sims or something.

It looks like my options are the t460s or the p50. The x260 looks good but their website doesn't offer any other SSD sizes than 128gb.
>>
>>53776618
Me here. Overlooked the select option that allows me to customize everything.

The thinkpad T560 looks sweet. Just under a grand for i5 6300U, 8Gb RAM, backlit with number pad and ~16" fhd IPS touch screen.

I was going to buy an SSD to go with it since paying 230$ for a 256gb SSD is a ripoff.

Is it worth it to buy a laptop with ddr3 RAM now that ddr4 is available and not much more costly?

Are ideapads durable? They look like any other laptop but the specs are crazy compared to other models. 900$ for a dGPU GTX 950 4GB. It doesn't specify that it's an M model but it probably is. Still though. One of the few models with HQ processors and DDR4.

Oh shit H means soldered. Okay. Fuck. Honestly I don't know shit about laptops. I didn't even know you could change out CPU's.

So even though it's going to cost me more to get the P50s which has a lesser processor(6300U) and DDR3L and a quadro m500m, I should still get it?

Can I buy aftermarket laptop graphics cards? That m500m might as well be a 920m. Lower bandwidth RAM and dual core i5 for about 300 more than the idea pad 700.

But the p50s looks way more durable and attractive than that sleek modern shit. Fuck. What do?

>>53779782
Do some research. It took me awhile before I decided on the e6440. It has every feature I want and the future upgradability I might need. The price was right so I took the plunge.

Lots of dGPUs are built onto the mobo, but if you're looking specifically for a modular GPU slot in a laptop, look at the Dell Precision laptops. m4800 is pretty much god tier for that.

anything with a U is going to be ULP (Ultra Low Power) and those are usually soldered. Also anyting from intel starting with a 6 is skylake, and not worth it.

Look for laptops from 2013, or 2014, very good prices, and the only, literally the only improvements between them and the newest generation is lower power consumption and shit like m.2 support, which i'm still not sold on.
>>
>>53779852
>>53779782
By the way, one good way to really evaluate a laptop is to search for the model number + the words "owners Manual"

so "m4800 Owners Manual"

this will essentially discuss all the hardware features and supported upgrades. There are also tons of "Owners club" threads on various laptop forums where they talk about custom mod potential.
>>
>>53773619
I think everyone here thinks that. Why do you think the **20 series Thinkpads are the newest ones anyone recommends?
>>
>>53779852
>>53779888
Let me explain a little something.

I'm going into college. I have approximately 1400-1500 to spend. I'd prefer not to have to do much more than buy an SSD and RAM. I'd also highly prefer to buy new because I -need- a 4 year gusrantee/warranty. If I'm left without a computer in college I'm fucked. I'm mainly looking for a PC with a solid processor, 8GB RAM. And GPU equivalent of about a 940M. Soldered isn't that big of an issue because if the PC fails or gets crappy on me I'll make a warranty claim since it covers 100% of all cases including if I smack it with a hammer.

That being said. I'm looking for durability and performance. I really like the P50s but the 6300U dual core i5 bugs the hell out of me. Sure it's hyperthreaded but it's 15w. I want the performance. I can't go from a 5820k/gtx 980 down to a 920m and 6300u and be happy
>>
>>53779963
My dude, you are wasting your money.
>>
>>53780002
I appreciate the input but without any supported evidence i really couldn't care. I need as high end of a PC I can get within my budget while preferably staying close to the classic thinkpad look but that's not a requirement.
