Exactly what they said. It's rarely needed. They aren't talking about servers but desktop OS. All the major distro's have GUI's for things that used to be CLI only.
>>
>>53758283
also they are talking about normie novices using it not power users.
>>
>>53758283
I've been using Linux for years and am a bit of an evangelist, but that's simply not true. There's always something (if it's not a FB machine at least during initial setup) that can't be done through a GUI.

They're talking about how females think the cli is icky and gross. That's why we have GUI's so that low IQs and females are given pretty pictures to interact with because they will never have the mental skills needed to be a power user. It's like how a fast food restaurant will replace words on their POS system with pictures of the food items so that they no longer have to rely on their employees to be literate.

If you briefly examined society, you'd see that what those anons are saying is largely true. The very same women who champion a feminism that says that they deserve equal pay, can do the same jobs, and honestly can be a firefighter or fight on the front lines are going to school for arts degrees, they want to learn gender studies or other nonsense social studies.

Instead of getting angry about what they're saying, you should ask yourself why the West has constructed this backward and confusing social paradigm. Don't you think it's strange that the most well-known woman in tech, Anita Sarkeesian, has no actual technical know how and is just a social critic?

As much as feminists want to pretend they're solving the problem, they're actually doing jack shit. When an anon on /g/ shines a light on that, you ought to think about how to respond long enough that you don't look like a moron.

I honestly can't call myself a feminist because I'm not sexist and feminism is the biggest purveyor of sexism in modern society (against both women and men) , although somehow it's fooled everyone into thinking otherwise.

I don't mean to be pedantic, but "things more people should know" is the opposite of what a secret is. This is just a bunch of little-known facts (and some of them are debatable, so "fact" is a little overzealous)

Linux is just a kernel though; Debian and Fedora and etcetera are all different operating systems
It's less confusing than saying that MS DOS or Windows 95 programs won't work on Windows 7 or 10

That's why it will never be the year of Linux.
>>
>>53758890
they use common components because the distribution of those components is not hindered by restrictive licenses (the linux kernel for example), however they're different operative systems crafted by different people.
>>
>>53758930
The only differences between Debian and Fedora are the package manager (which can be easily replaced) and the available packages in the official repositories.

Then articles like the one the OP links to should stop referring to Linux as a homogeneous operating system and start referring to it as a jumble of distinctly incompatible operating systems affiliated by their shared kernel.

The fact that the article even needs to acknowledge that there are differences between Linux distributions is an admission that "Linux" isn't a single thing, which makes it impossible for Linux advocates (or zealots, as in this thread) to defend.

Forking is the only reason why free software works

>don't like the direction of your software project?
>mutiny and make your own fork
>compete against the original
>software becomes better as a result

Just look at libav vs ffmpeg
>>
>>53759063
then we should stop calling them "distros" because that's belying the incompatibility between these things. they're different operating systems, like OS X and Windows 10 are different operating systems.

Comparing the broader grouping of Linux with specific operating systems like OS X and W10 is like comparing the Homo Sapien species to the Arachnida order.
>>
>>53759082
i don't think that is the only reason why FOSS works, however i agree with your second statement regarding that competition is good.

One big advantage of the open source is precisely that is open to collaboration, so people that wouldn't have been able to collaborate or improve something in the first place now can do it.

>>
>>53758217
It's a misleading statement.

Most linux machines on the planet are phones. So for most linux machines, you never have to use the terminal.

Linux desktops often don't need a terminal, but it's still the best thing to use for troubleshooting.

You can install, configure, and interact with a linux server without ever using the command line, if you choose just the right tools, but it's not going to be the norm. Or even the best option.

Feminist like every other term has lost all meaning in the internet age. Find 10 random people and ask what Feminist, Fascist, Capitalist, or whatever else means and you will get 10 different answers. Everyone has contorted terms to fit their own personal needs. (mostly politicians to push agendas)
>>
>>53759140
I agree that they're different operative systems and it may be a good idea to don't call them distros if the word bothers you. I think more people should inform themselves that they're different operative systems to avoid confusions (/g/ is a very good example of htis).

Because it's true. Unless you're a sysadmin or developer you almost never need to use the terminal. These days I mostly use the terminal for programming only, most other things can be done via GUI apps more easily than having to memorize command line options and editing text files.
