Why all the hate on here for Linux mint cinnamon 17.3? It just werks.

Why all the hate on here for Linux mint cinnamon 17.3? It just werks.

because it's fucking bloated shit

fuck off
>>
>>53758103
it runs fast as fuck though. if you say otherwise your machine is crap or you are an idiot.
>>
>>53758103
this. it comes preloaded with x11. what a piece of shit.
>>
>>53758017
I've been running it since december when windows 7 shit the bed and i didn't have an activation key so i just went to mint.

It's been great but i will most likely switch to the next mint LTS release which is around April 20th or so.

Don't expect to get any love from /g/ using mint, The Arch autists here will just spam you to death with their inane ramblings.

I have to dual boot win10 for some programs. I wasn't happy with the telemetry so use Linux mint for most things everything seems fast using ssd and i5 no issues to speak of.

I was just wondering why all the hate, I'd used Linux before but had a nightmare with drivers etc. I just installed mint got my hp drivers for my wireless printer setup my vpns and never looked back.
>>
>>53758131
you are an idiot if you insist on using bloated garbage over something else that runs just as fast and has FAR less bloat
>>
>>53758131
It's very fast anyone saying otherwise hasn't used it imo.

I installed it because I wanted something unfuckupable for my first kick at uefi dual boot.
Still using it 2 months later.
Shit just werks.
>>
>>53758308
Name me one distro I can install that is as fast and will work with all of my components without having to fuck around reading wikis for hours?

Cool mint and the gang. Like you said it just werks and the price is right.

Not OP, but I'm running Mint now and getting ready to install Xubuntu when the next release comes out in a few weeks. Cinnamon is very good but I don't find myself using most of the features, and XFCE is snappier so why not go back to it? Mint's own release of their xfce version won't be until sometime over the summer.
>>
Because it is popular. If it is popular then 4chan hates it, period. There are no logical reasons for the hate.

I don't think they allow it anymore though, I tried to update an unactivated win7 to 10 and the upgrade worked but 10 stayed unactivated.

The botnet was like a few weeks ago.

>site gets fucked by some random guy
>mint devs notice and don't immediately take the site down to protect users from other potential issues
>entire user database was compromised
>ISOs were poisoned with a literal botnet

There's other issues as well though.

Another interesting thing is Linux Mint does not update the kernel by default. The devs actually recommend you stay on a kernel release for as long as possible which is a hilariously bad idea when many of the changes in kernel releases are security and stability related. There's also a lot of performance tweaks that you wont be getting this way.

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=111929
>>
>>53758880
That's because if it screws up your OS is fucked. I would rather not risk it unless there is a specific reason to do so.
>>
>>53758996
If it screws up you can just reboot into the previous kernel release.
>>
>>53758193
I'm surprised someone who can't activate Windows 7 is able to use Linux.

>>
>>53758996
>I would rather not risk it unless there is a specific reason to do so
Improved security, stability, functionality and performance aren't reasons good enough?
>>
>>53759084
No because most of that shit isn't true. For the most part the minor updates just add more drivers. Linus refuses to add security to kernel updates.

By need, I mean you are trying to do something, but are unable to unless you update the kernel.
>>
>>53758996
Aside from the obvious solution of just using the previous kernel release, Linux Mint is just a downstream release of Ubuntu and Ubuntu's devs already test kernel releases for regressions. Debian devs do it as well. Kernel releases go through two other sets of devs before they even reach the Mint. What are they even doing that causes a kernel release to break on their system when it doesn't on the other two?

Ubuntu is shit. Unity is literally being assimilated by gnome as we speak. Eventually they will have to drop it entirely because the entire thing is based on gnome and the gnome devs don't give a shit if their upgrade path coincides with Unity.

This is why the ubuntu software center was dropped for gnome software and the unity file manager had to be dropped because gnome made incompatible changes to it.

Just watch ubuntu will eventually have to dump unity and switch to gnome.

Cinnamon is missing too many features and desktop applets. I'm too stuck in my ways. Linux is a hobbyist distro. Granted the devs handled the security issue as well as they could but it still brings up the lack of security. The issue with potentially sketchy codecs and lack of security updates is troubling too. It's basically just an extremely out of date Ubuntu, there's no real reason to use Mint over Ubuntu with Cinnamon. Hell just keep it and call it Cibuntu. You don't have to go through as much trouble maintaining an independant distro and you can still keep the design of Cinnamon and include whatever default programs you want on it.
