I went back to OpenOrifice. It actually works and Oracle donated it to Apache so you can't complain about it not being free enough for you.

There might be more money in server functions, but there's still plenty in the desktop, even if just to make programming easier.
It's a lot easier to test the server your writing when you can quickly spin up and instance on the same machine you are working on.
Also, windows just isn't usable for me on the desktop.
Git for example, is far too slow, it's a good order of magnitude slower on windows.
Catching up, but why go through all the pain of using windows when I can just use linux, and have everything just work.
Also, I imagine there is a good chance you use either chrome or firefox.
(Chromium is libre, so good enough.)

For Git on Windows I've found the best way to use it is through Cygwin, if you're the tyoe to use Git through a GUI you'll be limited to gitk and whatever else is in the Cygwin packages but command-line works just as well as ever and it does not have the weird gradual slowdown that the native Windows Git has over time

Most of the functionality in Word has been replicated in LibreOffice, save some issues with transitioning to docx format. The only problem is that the interface is closer to pre-2007 word, so most people transitioning from Word don't know where to find most features.

A lot of times open source does require backing. It may be open source but that doesn't mean that money wasn't pored into it.
Also commercial products have to sell so they have to compete with the best in the market.

First, MS Office is not created by a "small" team.
Second, LibreOffice and OpenOffice are pretty good and are superior to MS in many ways. For example, Microsoft Word has no support for Smartfont, UOF or LaTeX, OpenOffice and LibreOffice run on many more platforms than MS Office does, HSQL is literally ages ahead of Microsoft Jet, Excel can't export proper HTML, no portable version, no SVG support, no MathML, no hyphenation in Excel, no OpenFormula, Access has terrible integration with most DBMSes, etc. etc. etc....
Last but not least, I could mention dozens of examples of proprietary software that can't keep up with its free software competitors: web browser implementations, standard networking protocols, database management systems, etc.
