That shit processor can barely handle 768 let alone 1080. And yeah, Acer. It's gonna have a shit matte screen and it's going to have the usual problems with getting Linux running on a Chromebook.

>That shit processor can barely handle 768 let alone 1080

You don't need a powerful CPU to run a 1080p display on a laptop. Were you planning to play games on it or something?

>it's going to have the usual problems with getting Linux running on a Chromebook.

What problems? Chromebook are one of the best laptops to run linux on with crouton.

Chromebooks are this generation's netbooks - slow processors, shit screens
and wicked sense of humor
>>
It's a pretty nice machine. The screen resolution will not make it slow per se, so no worries there, plus Celerons are fast enough. I'll keep an eye on it, might grab one.
>>
>>53753981
I've tried plugging a netbook with similar celeron N2840 into a 1080p monitor in single monitor mode. The performance was not up to par. It really just sucks.

And Crouton is a hack. You've still got useless ChromeOS running in the background taking up resources for no reason.

WHY THE FUCK IS THIS STILL A THING

because of supply and the fact that it provides a readable ppi

At least it's not 15.6"

Only thing that's lacking for a nice Loonix laptop is storage. I can't do with only 32gb. Wonder if it's upgradeable?
>>
>>53754634

sometimes you can't discern å from ä on school laptop but I guess that is just another Euro problem that we will have to put up with

I don't see expandable storage anywhere but you could always throw a low-profile flashdrive nub into one of those usb 3 ports and still have one open

How about 屨 and 屩

YES

I've been waiting for a premium upgrade from my C720. I might convert this guy to a Windows machine for my stat class.

that's a rough one, even for 1080p

Honestly, it seems almost a perfect laptop to me. I've been looking for a nice replacement for quite some time now. I just might get this guy and take your advice and add some USB storage.

Probably shit parts that will break after a year. But for that price point, sounds like a half decent Linux machine.
>>
>>53754612
The same reason why 1280x1024 is still a thing going strong for 16 years now. It's cheap to manufacture and distribute. We're just starting to see 1920x1080 widescreen monitors enter the workplace now, so hopefully laptop screens should improve within the next few years.

In other words, free market blah blah blah trump 2016.

Gentoo, actually.

Because the screen is 14 inches you dummy, you don't need anything higher.

You're not fooling anyone with that, Acer
>>
>>53754462
The Toshiba Chromebook 2 which has a 1080p display also uses the same CPU and most reviewers are satisfied about the performance of it.

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-CB35-B3340-Chromebook-Celeron-HD-Screen/dp/B00N99FXIS

But you also have to remember that ChromeOS performs a lot faster on low-end hardware compared to windows.

>And Crouton is a hack. You've still got useless ChromeOS running in the background taking up resources for no reason.

When I run chrome OS on my 2GB ram ARM chromebook I never really notice a different in performance running both at the same time. I can run 10 tabs in a web browser in crouton and chrome OS and it still feels fast.
>>
>>53755171
Hardly. Sure, it's based on Gentoo but it's barely what people mean when they say "Linux."
>>
>>53755888
Acer have a better photocopier than some other laptop makers.
>>
>>53753866

so it' either an internal sd card or emmc? that combined with uefi can give linux fits for starting up properly

Chromebooks are based off coreboot. Generally they have a M.2 2242 slot for SSD, also generally they have hardware write protect you have to disable if you want to install your own custom coreboot. The Google version relies on a very specific way of partitioning the SSD which is a bit of a pain, but even then with a bit of hoop jumping you can boot Linux (see chrx).
>>
>>53753981

The main problem with Braswell is VP9 decoding, you really want an i3 if you expect smooth VP9 video.

I like my Dell Chromebook 13.

You don't need to use Crouton. With some relatively easy adjustments you can run a full blown linux distro on your botnetbook without running botnetos in the background.
>>

A Chromebook is only useful as a netbook. 14 inch is too large to be portable.
>>
>>53753866
A laptop like this already exists, and with a quad core and a 128gb ssd
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AS3B79G/ref=psdc_565108_t1_B017BX510W

There is a kernel bug that causes hangs sadly. 4.1 kernels have worked "okay" for the couple of months I have had this thing. I got mine for $200 off of Woot.
>>
Acer has made some nice chrome books, I think they finally found something they're good at.

For anyone who doesn't own a Chromebook, Acer is the ibm/Lenovo of chrome books, decent specs and nice build quality for a reasonable price. The c720 is /g/ approved as a partial FOSS machine even.
I'm still preferable to the cb3, simply because I got mine for 100$.

I'm personally not that interested in an aluminum body, I prefer matte abs plastic
>>
Wondering how this compares to a $900 macbook air?
With linux it wouldn't be all that bad.
>>
Matte screen? If it's glossy, fuck no.
>>
>>53753866
I agree shit goes well with extra shit on top of it. Linux is perfect for it.
