What do you think about short courses in programming like http://www.makersacademy.com/ ?

Are there any others like this which are worth doing? I'd like to get into freelance developing. Thanks.

Use a book. Courses like that try to give you the sense you are making real accomplishments while only teaching you minimal syntax. And they aren't really teaching... it's mostly monkey see monkey do sort of stuff with no real thought involved.
