I'm building a PC for my dad. What OS should I use: Windows 7 or Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB N? I'm split down the middle, Windows 7 is spyware-free but Windows 10 boots a lot faster. Personally I use Windows 7, but then again I'm not a normie.

My windows 7 installation boots in less than 25 seconds, including the stupid mobo logo. I do use an ssd, but the way windows 10 realises 'faster' speeds is by not turning your pc off at all, but rather put it in a 'sleep' state.

If you really hate windows then use a noob linux distro like mint.
If you need windows then use windows 10 and just run all the debotnet scripts and it's fine.
I did a clean install last week and I was able to turn off automatic updates, disable the cortana process from running, uninstall most (not all) of the preinstalled shitty apps, and disable all telemetry.

Windows 7 Enterprise. I use it and my 5 year old laptop boots in 1 minute, it's not justifiable to install a piece of shit OS like Win 10 to go under that.

If you want a windows OS then windows 7 won't be EOL until 2020. And no doubt will be extended.
If you want to experiment with a linux distro then mint or unbuntu is the way to go if your new to linux. Although the architect installer can really simplify arch.
It is worth experimenting with linux now as computers are moving (slowly) in that direction.
Windows 7 isn't spyware free. If you do install windows 7 make sure you install spybot anti beacon to remove the pushed telemetry.

Arch is not a timesink os. The reason this meme exist is because it's the OS the big techie nerds go for and much with stuff.
It's like saying a rally car is a time sink car. It's not because it isn't stable or breaks down a lot it's because the sort of people who like to tinker use it to.
It's really quite stable. If you need help installing it architect linux installer simplifies the process.

And there's no reason to give him the LTSB N version either, you can turn off automatic updates in the Enterprise version so they are non-intrusive and you still get regular security updates, and he will probably need the media features too. Unless you're gunna install MPC-HC + KCP for him and a tricked out foobar2k or something stupid.
Unless he's already using W7 right now and doesn't like change, just ask him if he wants to upgrade you idiot.

Just go with windows 10 mate. The spying is a meme, they gather some info but /g/ is like a tech version of the daily mail. It also updates itself and gives you more recovery options. With win 10 you can nuke the PC back to how it was when you installed it and still keep all his files, making it much easier for you to fix if he fucks it up.

I installed Ubuntu for my mom over 1.5 years ago. She uses the computer every day and it only had two small problems that were cleared up in 5 minutes during all this time.
Best decision ever.

There are also Peerblock lists you can get which block the IP's the data is sent to.

Windows will still download priority updates on a metered connection.
That priority update could be a new ip address for updates / telemetry dumps.
Microsoft has the ability to remove identify and remove programs on a machine remotely. This is for the removal of virus and pirated software/games.
They have no used that ability maliciously. But people have reported sysbot anti beacon being removed. Peerblock can also be removed this way.

I didn't see if you had posted whether your pops can even pootter. In my experience the older gen can't handle computers. Use an OS that you will not have to service in the future.
