Is there anyway to test the 'health' of an external hard drive? Like a software or behavior to look out for?
Can a hard drive stop working because of months/years of not using it?

If it appears as a HDD, crystaldiskinfo or any other S.M.A.R.T analysis tool will do the job, mechanical or otherwise.

If it appears as a portable device, no idea.

Oh I guess I was wrong about telling him that >>53749760
Lemme delete it

I am reading on Google now that I need to look for SMART Status. Apparently SMART data indicate mechanical faults on drives!
I can do it via command prompt using
wmic
diskdrive get status

However I was wondering, will that also check external drives or just internal drives?
If not I gotta get an app like DriveDx (reddit recommends that).
Not a fan of apps desu senpai.

op here

>>53749760
it's ok
>>53749776
do you think the commands

wmic
diskdrive get status

will show about external drives too? I get status OK for the internal drive now.

Do you have an external HDD to try it on? If not, I can try it on mine.
>>
>>53749801
Huh, I >>53749776 didn't know you could do that in WMIC, however it appears to just list all the drives, not let you select one specifically from what I'm seeing here. I'd still suggest downloading a S.M.A.R.T monitoring tool, just for dat comprehensive information.

Just did that, no dice and it does not appear you can specify a drive like you can in DISKPART, but OP's thread is about an external drive soo..

Only if moisture and temperature fucks it. But you have plastic containers for HDDs to mitigate that shit.
I had an old HDD stay in a plastic container for 4 years and 3 months in the attic if i remember correctly. Still worked and all data was still there.

oh hey, I connected the drive and now I get 2 OKs instead of one.
So it does check for all drives. It doesn't say which OK is for which drive though.

I might also get an app just to see the extra info. What should I get CrystalDisk or DriveDx?
