How many of you have your own domain and have roaming profiles set up on your home server? Is it worth it?
>>
>>53749406
I'm actually curious about what hardware and software goes into making one
>>
>>53749426
I've heard it takes a bunch of storage, but I'm not sure how much.
>>
>>53749426
You have to use Windows Server if you're retarded like me and don't know how to set it up on Linux.
>>
>>53749406
I know that there are certain Linux distros specifically for server hosting, but besides that, that's all I know
>>
I just think it would be nice to have a couple of identical computers that anyone in the house can use and have all their files sync and be centrally located
>>
>>53749406
Why should i setup a home server? beside hosting a website/email, nas, seedbox.

This interest me i think this should be my new personal project. any website ideas?
>>
>>53749632
I have Plex set up on my server. Works great.
>>
I'm starting to set up one now. I got a bunch of drives from work. They'll being going into RAID1. Probably software dmraid unless I can find a cheap RAID card. Old case and old mobo/cpu from last PC.

Gunna use it for storage and backups. I want to find a tagging file system / manager so I can decently organize my porn. If I do that I'll write a script to pull tags off boorus based on md5.

Why not host sites as well and get that extra sheckle
>>
I run geekbasic.com from a home server with an AMD sempron and software written in BASIC, yet my site has an alexa rank of about 400k

I also own geekbasic.info, digitalkickback.com, bitshares.co.nf, and dogechat.co.nf

Is it ever advisable to run a web API from something other than a VM (that is ideally brought up and provisioned using Vagrant)?

I'm trying to think why anyone would not do it this way, but it seems the best way to me

Also does anyone use Vagrant with KVM here? Does it just werk (tm)?

Digging the retro look
>>
>>53749831
thank you. it took me years to make the site not look stupid. :P
>>
>>53749774
A couple reasons. Mainly because I already have a colocated server that I split with friends. We'll host some people to recoup the costs and then host our own sites. Secondly I have shit internet and don't want to put in effort for minimal profit, I work too much as-is
>>
>>53749830
Depends what said API is for. Something light, VM. A load balancing database, maybe go with a dedi.
>>
>>53749774
bandwidth can be a bitch when you get 100k plus connections a day

Winshit
Nyet nuigga.
Have a handful of domains, but I rather use hostfiles with links to my IP's, don't need to worry if you can't get a dns connection.
Makes secure surfing on public wifi trivial.
SSH, SOCKS, and tmux. What more could you need?
>>
>>53749955
>Winshit
Meant to be greentexted, like that.
>>
>>53749907
Sorry don't think I made myself clear. Wouldn't you even run the load balancer from a VM just because it is far easier to reproduce and pull up and down than a dedicated machine?
I meant I think we are at a point where everything is better in a VM, possibly except for vidya.
>>
>>53750017
Depends how much storage/power you need. I was planning an online system with friends a while ago (project fell through). DBs could be put in a VM but the nodes serving images would need a lot more storage space. Colocated 1U servers were the cheapest at that point. That would have been permanent expansion, not temporary.
>>
>>53750091
Why are you doing local storage? Get a SAN if you're going to be doing Enterprise level stuff and dedicated storage for DBs.
>>
>>53750017
Any server you build would ideally be part of a system like Vagrant, salt, PowerShell DSC, puppet, etc. Special snowflake servers lead to trouble.

My home srever has duel 4core amd opterons at like 4ghz and 32gd ddr2 ram

I'm using an old dell. 2.0ghz core 2 duo
>>

I have a domain but I don't use roaming profiles. Not much point, it's mainly used for end users who are too stupid to find their files. I can access my NAS from any VM I happen to be on.

There are more things you could do/try/learn than you possibly have time for. This is merely a shitty brainstorm from some anon, go nuts familia.

>Not much point, it's mainly used for end users who are too stupid to find their files
Not really. Use it as a profile backup, and re-image machines without regard for user files.

Makes life easy.
