Vista, in a sense, set "the standard" for future Windows. Everything you see in Windows 7, 8, and 10 is based on Vista.
Hell, there are basic Microsoft drivers in Windows 10 that date back to 2006, when Vista was RTM'd.
Everything, from the Control Panel layout, to the Device Manager driver updating, to Sound settings, is based on Vista.

In Sept. 2007 I bought an Acer Aspire with a Pentium D, 1GB of RAM, and a 5400RPM drive. OS was Vista Home Premium 32bit. Of course performance was shit in that laptop, but I managed just fine at the time. Pic related.

I really liked vista. I actually remember when I first booted vista and was genuinely amazed by aero, I must've spent around 10min moving a window around, just to see it fading away and coming back in.
Aero was rad as shit at launch.

seriously apart from some outdated XP applications not working, it ran smooth as silk, i had 4GB ram at the time.
To be honest when I built my PC back then I bought vista home basic, did t care about the glass effect or any of the extra crap the other versions had, it ran well and was very reliable on my core duo PC.
