I've been using XFCE for a long run of using LXDE. I thought about using KDE again, but for the life of me I can't see why it has to have so many interconnected parts that just bloat the whole thing. It's a fuckin mess! I don't even use QT programs because it pulls in all that shit. There's some rally good programs out there that would be great if they didn't pull in a whole other DE. It's fucked.
>>
It's strange. Whenever I've tried KDE I got the feeling that 'something is wrong'. It was mentally discomforting, I felt somewhat repulsed. I can imagine that when your uncle's hand is slipping into your underwear and starts to fondle your 11 year old penis, pulling the foreskin off, caressing the sensitive tip creating the shock that just leaves you parallelized, so you can't scream, can't call for help and there is only you and your uncle in the room must feel very similar. Gnome3 on the other hand it's so bad.

I use "calm window manager" provided by the nice folks over at OpenBSD. It's the best window manager I've ever used.

Anyway, if it sucks for other people, why? Educate me!

Also contrary to what people say I enjoyed gnome experience especially new gnome 3.20 is amazingly well optimized.

KDE is great, just behind XFCE. It's bogged down by its bloat but it's the prettiest DE.

Plasma 4 was quite nice in its final version after some 10 years of development, but then they discontinued the product in favor of Plasma 5 and it's shit all over again. Plasma 5 has been first released two years ago and they're yet to reach feature parity with Plasma 4, let alone all the bugs, it's horrible. It could be the the best desktop environment out there but it isn't.

Good thing about Plasma is it is getting better at each updates.
5.5 is really as stable as KDE4 ever was. Don't know about 5.6

People break KDE when they rely too much on gtk softwares I guess

Why is the KDE project so based?

Seriously though, KDEgames deserves more credit. I don't know of any other Sudoku program that will warn me if I have to guess, or any other Solitaire program that will let me know if a game is still winnable.

I literally dont understand GNOME hate. it just fucking works. It stays the hell out of your way, has god tier window management, actually makes the super key useful, has a ton of software and extensions, is stable as hell, and can look gorgeous if themed correctly. I have literally no idea why people have problems with it.

Unless you're on a laptop, that is, and need as much power saving as possible. I use MATE on my laptop but simply because I customized it to function like GNOME 3
>>
>>53745397
>just works
Barely.
>stays the hell out of your way
Except that its forced compositing slows everything you run down.
>god tier window management
HAHAHHAHno
>super key useful
It's called being able to customize keyboard shortcuts. KDE Plasma can do it and you can specify any super+key shortcut to do anything. Making the Super key by itself do anything is goddamn stupid because accidentally pressing it and losing focus on what you're doing is poor design.
>ton of software and extensions
The software is horrible. "Here's a generic version of software that does X with no goddamn features, enjoy." At least it has some decent extensions that will give you back desktop features that it should have came with in the first place.
>stable
HAHAHHHAHHHAHA
>gorgeous
I'll give you that it does look sort of nice.
>>
>>53745397
GNOME fights against the user. It wants a single solitary sacred paradigm for the user interface, and will work to prevent you from ever conceiving and implementing your own paradigm (like, say, putting the dock at the bottom). You can mitigate this by installing extensions, but the extensions are unstable and prone to breakage.

If you do not believe wholeheartedly in the developers' One True Vision for how a desktop should work, then you are not welcome in the Land of GNOME.

So, no thanks, I'll stick with KDE which encourages me to break away from the defaults and design my own paradigm which functions exactly how _I_ want it to function, not anybody else.

haha yes. it just fucking works dude.
>KDE Plasma can do it and you can specify any super+key shortcut
>super+key
thats the fucking point on GNOME. you just hit super and it does everything: window layout and immediate searching of applications. You can have keyboard shortcuts too for christ's sake. thats not KDE exclusive. jesus.
>>53745494
>design my own paradigm which functions exactly how _I_ want it to function, not anybody else.
so use MATE
>>
>>53745542
MATE is a technological dead-end.

If I wanted to use a GTK DE then I would use Cinnamon.

But since Qt is the superior technology, I'll stick with KDE.
>>
>>53745542
>slowing your computer down and making it buggy as fuck
>not shit
what
>just fucking works
Okay
>you just hit super
Again, this is bad design.
>not kde exclusive
That's the point, it's not a Gnome plus, but Gnome makes it into a minus by having Super by itself do something.
>>
KDE 5 is a complete trainwreck, I have no idea what the developers were thinking. It's extremely slow (with 8gigs of ram, like what the actual fuck) things crash every five minutes...just nope

But KDE 4 is great, I use that every day. Fast, highly customizable, comfy.
>>
I've never used linux, but looking up pictures of Kde Vs Xfce, I think I'd rather use xfce. Xubuntu seems comfy.
>>
>>slowing your computer down
are you using a ten year old integrated GPU? fucking christ. Of course I dont recommend gnome for non-desktop usage
>you just hit super
>this is bad design.

You can just switch KDE5 back to the Oxygen theme of KDE4.

>>
>>53745603
You can always switch back to the Oxygen theme.
>>
>>53745596
It doesn't matter how good your computer is, compositing is a waste of fucking resources and will make your system drag by comparison.
>drop down terminal extension
Is it accessible by a single key? If so, yes. Anything that a single key can rob you of the focus of what you're using is shit. This is why the keys around the super key do what they do -- they are MODIFIER keys, and so is the super key. It MODIFIES the key (or keys) you press with it to do something else, and can't very easily be done unintentionally.

I can't believe I have to actually explain How To Computer 101 to fucking people these days. For fuck's sake, how far down the stupid hole have you all gone?
>>
>>53745600
Look, I joined the Linux community last september. I tried out various distros and DE's. KDE 4 gave me what I wanted - customization, gorgeous looks. KDE 5 on the other hand gave me tons of crashes and ebola. Literally, there were things that once crashed I was unable to start that feature ever again. I tried KDE 5 a month ago, that bug is still there by the way.

I don't care how "modern" and "'advanced" something is, if it can't fucking work properly it's trash. Also it's a total system hog, despite hardly improving anything from KDE 4.
>>
>>53745627
>It doesn't matter how good your computer is, compositing is a waste of fucking resources and will make your system drag by comparison.
