I currently have a Note 4 thats totally payed off. So far the phone does everything well and is rooted and modified to suit my every need.
Are the newer (similar) phones today worth upgrading to?

Wait for the note 6, it'll probably have the sdcard slot back. Note 5 is pretty good but custom ROM support is complete shit and it lacks expandable storage. If you don't mind loosing the spen and other samshit "features" then get a Nexus 6 for a bigger screen, or a 6p for a finger print reader and longer support. If you want to keep expandable storage and removable battery, a LG V10 is pretty good but ROM support it probably shit because of the dual screens.

Oh, well yeah most people don't have that kind of cash. I had to put up $250 on an S7 but I'll be paying $26/mo. on top of my data plan until the remaining amount is covered.
