What do you think /g/entoomen?
will VR headsets ever be as popular/mainstream as laptops, TV, or smartphones?
>>
>>53736399
yes.
>>
>>53736399
No, at least not until holograms are released. Nobody wants to wear a stupid box on their face.
>>
>8K + res
>Covers peripheral vision fully
>Weighs less than 50 grams
>Has force feedback controllers
>Costs less than $200
>Has 3D waifu's
Give it another 20 years
>>
>>53736497
Holograms are shit compared to VR. With VR you are immersed in virtual environment, if someones solves locomotion problem, it will be a fucking new world my friend.
>>
I'd like a VR headeset EXCEPT FUCKING NOT

Because all applications I've seen are just shit and useless, especially games, they all are fucking lame
>>
>>53737773
>With VR you are immersed in virtual environment
the only immersion you have is strapping a screen 2 inches from your eyes and putting headphones on
>>
>>53737941
I know it's far from Matrix experience, but it's still better than to look at some shitty hologram.
> screen 2 inches from your eyes
How else would you want to project virtual world, with fucking lasers shooting into your eyes?
>>
>>53738283
Laser in the eyes is something that's being worked on
>>
>>53736399
I'm gonna invent a vr program where you use it whilst fucking your wife except with vr you think your fucking some hot actress bitch and your wife is wearing one too fantasising with Brad shit. Then, once I become a multi millionaire I will sell a program for paedophiles, contains kids of all ages, this will help reduce actual paedophilia, then I'll make a rape one, animals and fresh corpses. After that I'll sell the company to Google for a couple of billion, all cash no stock then use the money to get lobby Congress to get this filth outlawed.
>>
>>53738336
It will take years before retinal display will be a fucking thing. Right now your best option is classic HD screen.
>>
>>53736399
I wouldn't buy one since I don't play video games - I can find 0 practical uses to it.

It will be like a gaming console nothing more.
>>
>>53737803
Exactly. It's demo stuff, you try that shit on for a few days, until you are used to the immersion and notice that playing muh games felt a lot more comfortable when you didn't have a display strapped to your head.

Also, maybe I'm just not neckbeard enough, but most of the applications, especially the more hypothetical ones are weird escapist fantasies.
>You can meet online with other people in a virtual world using an avatar!
Yeah, right, and then enacting furry porn or something, disgusting shit.

Nah, VR is clearly overhyped regarding it's potential impact on a mass market.
>>
>>53736592
>20 years
>implying we won't all be zombies with brain implants connecting us, all our senses and our consciousness directly to the mainframe.
>>
remember when people said 3D TVs would be mainstream? or that 4K would be the standard?

lmao
>>
>>53739390
Didn't everyone buy 3D TVs though? And 4K is still relatively new. 4K will be standard. You just can't expect people to upgrade to 4K when they barely purchased their 1080p TVs only 2-3 years ago. I can almost guarantee that 5 years from now anything below 4K will be considered antique.
>>
>>53739468
>Didn't everyone buy 3D TVs though?
It doesn't really matter though, because nobody used it. There was literally zero enthusiasm for that technology. Everybody was annoyed by it in cinemas, didn't care for the free shutter glasses they got with their new TV and wasn't even aware that 3d blu-rays exist. The 3d hype was literally just a fantasy of the industry. I hope they learned from that experience and won't try to force VR on us in the same way.
>>
>>53738872
Habbo hotel VR, here we go
>>
>>53736592
By then we will have neural linkage
>>
>>53739622
Neural linkage in 20 years? We don't even have a remote clue how our brains works in detail except for some really vague basics. That stuff is not even imagined as of yet. >50 years, at least.
>>
Microsoft's Hololens AR experiments have been more interesting and useful than anything Oculus has shown thus far, which is more entertainment-based than anything.
>>
It's already a gimmick for neckbeards which has the same utility as 3d TVs.

Why are stupid people so hyped about it?

A fool and his money are easily parted I guess.
>>
>>53736399
industries will force it to become mainstream.

samsung already does this with free Gear VR for every Galaxy S7 sale
>>
>>53739803
They are visualizing matrix type stuff instead of actually considering that the tech is way too shit
>>
oh god guys. i have the worst feeling as of now

remember when parents/old hags told you that it's a bad gesture to be sound isolated by headphones and buds?

WE, will be the next generation when we tell those kids that it's bad to not only isolate you soundwise but also peripheral visionairy
>>
>>53739873
the thing is. in many countries, matrix didn't really get that much attention

VR will supposedly feel very fresh and new for the non tech aware normie.

this means that you will have much lower expectations to begin with
>>
>>53739913
This /g/ you retard what the fuck are you on about? Half of us are hikikomori and then there's kids like you
>>
Its one of those things that sucks right now but will be cool in like 10 years once tech catches up with the concept, sort of like the first lcd displays (they were awful), first usb drives (slow as fuck), first colour printers, first digital cameras, etc, etc. It will really only be useful for games though, and possibly simulated training (ie, pilots, commercial drivers)

Anyone that tries to tell you its useful for anything other than vidya is a lying shitbag. I swear to fuck if I see a commercial a year from now with some GQ-calibre sexhunk in a dress shirt/pants with perfectly rolled up sleeves wearing his VR headset smiling like a retard while taking a conference call (hurr but its like youre really there!) I'm going to lose my shit.
>>
I hope so I get the chance to make love to my waifu
>>
If Polaris which can do 4k VR is cheap enough and headset prices dip just a bit, sure.
>>
>>53740008
I think it might be useful for flying a drone or for controlling a crane.
>>
>>53740097
funny you mention that cause I actually do operate cranes sometimes for my job. It would be terrible for operating a crane since you need to constantly be looking beside you and kind of have one eye on the ground and one eye on your load at all times, your peripheral vision is an absolute necessity and those dont have nearly the fov to accommodate.

It might work if you had a camera on the boom or jib and the headset on a spotter's head and then he could give you directions telling you where your arm is, but 9.9999/10 there's a guy spotting where you're craning to anyways so it wouldn't really matter, and a screen that the operator could just look at would be more effective
>>
>>53739696
Random break through will happen 20years
>>
VR won't be mainstream until that shit can directly link up with our brains. So not for a long time.
