Used to use Arch. On Funtoo right no, been using it for years. I'm going to install Fedora on my new laptop though. I'm tired of fucking around, although I have a feeling I'll be back.
>>
>>53733252
enjoy your systemd cancer and faggot devs.
>>
>>53735538
I have to agree about the devs. In every forum thread I've been in they have acted like huge retards.

What is arch?

Arch currently. Switching to Fedora soon most likely because it's comfy. Need something pretty stable for college soon. Arch is just a risk I don't want to take.

oh you never used Fedora I see
well its definitly not comfy trying to get 3rd party drivers working, the word frustration comes to mind
and stable? are you joking? two times it borked on me during the 6months upgrade
and I even stopped using it in VM for testing shit because they would just refuse to be stable and reliable with hostadditions
and lets not forget the beautiful RPM packages which just have this thing where they do fucking nothing just fuck the shit up
>>
>>53736637
I used Fedora 17 for 2 years straight. Never had any issues. What issues am I going to run into with a C++ compiler, internet browsing and PDF reading? The most complicated thing I'll do is Minecraft lamao. I'm math majoring with CS minor.

But that being said. What AIO distro would you recommend? Not gentoo, arch. Debian or laggy shitbuntu. Literally can't get Ubuntu to run smoothly and I have a 5820k, 16gb ddr4 and GTX 980.
>>
>>53736153
An alternative to GNU. So it's Arch/Linux instead of GNU/Linux.

>themoreyouknow.jpg
>>
>>53736694
well not fedora that is considered bleedign edge and tesk monkey for corporate red hat

>Not gentoo, arch. Debian or laggy shitbuntu.
Manjaro should bring you benefits of arch while being more stable thanks to delayed updates
Xubuntu LTS should be out in few months and I would consider that as more stable and reliable than fedora by a landslide

but I personally would just use arch and I would backup my shit and everything so that I can redeploy whenever
>>
>>53736377
If you want stability, get Slackware, or Zenwalk if you've not enough slack to use Slackware.

Quick question for Archers

I got UEFI arch+windows installation on my large SSD
I have small SSD
and want to play with centos on it
how would I go about installing and booting it whenever?

It feels so damn complicated ever since UEFI :[
previously I could have just install on the hdd and boot with F12 menu from hdd I choose
but now its boot manager in bios that I choose and its all fucking me up

Do you not use GRUB?
>>
its a shit ton of work learning how to vim/ranger/computer in general. ADD is consantly fucking over my rtfm
>>
>>53737650
gummiboot or systemdboot as its called now
>>
>>53737654
>that font rendering
>>
>>53737583
so you're saying your two working OSs are on your ssd and boot via UEFI while your hdd that you don't seem to use is using grub? I'd say back up whatever you need from your hdd and format that bitch and do a proper UEFI bootloader style install
>>
>>53737583
You need to put entries in /boot/loader/entries duhhhh
>>
>>53737694
I am not saying that

PC is recent skylake build with gigabyte mobo UEFI of course
I have arch+windows7 dualboot using systemd boot

now I have empty 128GB ssd on which I want to install centos and play with it

How would I go about this?

I'm more focused on learning how to system without gui. If you have resources to share to provide constructive criticism i'm all ears. Pic unrelated
>>
>>53737659
I can't help you then my man. I'm not familiar with that. I would have just installed GRUB.

I know the beginner's guide only provides UEFI instructions for systemd boot, but you can find UEFI instructions for GRUB on the main page for it on the wiki.

boot loader entries point to specific initramfs-linux.img and to vmlinuz-linux
I did try to copy from centos installation /boot directory to directory on EFI partition
and point to those in an entry in boot loader...
>>
>>53737745
oh yeah, you just install the system and add a *.conf to /boot/loader/entries
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd-boot#Adding_boot_entries
>>
>>53737787
sorry did not finish the comment
It did not work, it said something like vmlinuz not valid or not accessible
>>
>>53737761
enable the hinting and subpixel fontconfig presets and get some good fonts. infinality if you really want.
>>
>>53737801
>>53737787
I went and check that boot again
it says vmlinuz-2.6.32-573.el6.x86_64 is unsupported
>>
>>53737787
you need to mount the efi system partition to /boot when you install. Look at a UEFI installation guide and carefully read it.
>>
>>53737853
I guess.. will go and try again
maybe there was such option when I was selecting root, that I could also choose /boot
though I am kinda worried
1. what if it wont fit, windows only created 100MB efi partition and theres already 2 systems there
2. what if it fucks up my other stuff there

but will see recovery from such should be relatively simple

will let this thread know in 15 minutes

Thanks anon.

Should I install a login manager or just stick without one? The ones I tried looked bad.
>>
>>53737959
if it's a single user system don't bother, just auto login your tty and have your shell start X.
>>
>>53738017
I'd rather avoid auto login, I don't want my non-tech savvy partner to break it.

>>

>>53737893
well Centos anon here
no dice
when I tried to select my fucking EFI partition for `/boot`
it told me that EFI partition cant be set as bootable or some such nonsense
shit, I will probably create EFI partition there fresh
and then disconnect my previous drive and install as if centos was alone on the system
hopefully I could then later choose by choosing which disk to boot from
or if shit fucks up just reinstall systemctl boot

how fucking awesome and simple and reliable MBR+Grub used to be
