If you want packages from the dark ages, sure. Maybe on an old pc that would be fine, but with a new one you really need the updated drivers.
>>
>>53733037
It's true that GPL is the best. Using MIT or BSD license is asking for apple to steal your work and make it proprietary. In fact, their kernel is literally the BSD kernel modified and made closed source. BSD users usually use BSD on their servers and a macbook for desktop use. It's literally doing apple's work for them.

Also, that piece of shit whines about the smallest possible problem and makes your computer useless for whole 90 seconds, and that adds up if there are more problems or the same one persists for a longer time.
When I upgrade, I'll try gentoo.

https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/2015-July/039443.html

>Arch has *never* been minimalist... a Linux kernel with every module available and every feature enabled at least when there's no non-bloat
related cost, feature-packed/complex GNU tools, nearly all optional features enabled across all the packages, etc.

>It has always used significantly more disk space and a measurable amount of additional memory than Debian and especially Gentoo as a consequence of keeping things simple (again, from a development perspective).

>>
>>53736410
Are there any visible advantages to Gentoo though? I'm sure there's something going for it
>>
i have arch installed by i'm only using barebone components; i3, urxvt, dmenu, and some xresources colors to spruce it up. thing is, i can't get my folders to not look puke green, and navigating through zsh is a pain at times. i'm using windows 8.1 as my main OS, but i go back to it once in a while to try and embrace it more. It's really annoying because i want to try and get wine to work with my programs like abelton and photoshop, but i don't know how to winecfg most shit so that it shows up in dmenu and wine automatically scripts itself to work with it.

does anyone else have a similar disposition? i really like what i have, but i just don't know how to use it efficiently. also i can't get mpv to seek through a folder while a video is playing. and ncmpcpp is giving me network errors. all gripes i want to go through because i try to just use transmission or foobar it makes me question why i bothered using it.
>>
>>53736483
A minimal install will usually mean lots of stuff missing, it's actually difficult to have everything working when you cut everywhere
>>
>>53732971

http://systemd-free.org/
>>
>>53736553
well it's mostly configuration files i think in my /etc. i'm not upset about that, but it's a pain to figure out how to actually edit them when the manpages don't do much other than commands for me, even worse for wine.
>>
>>53736476
Slightly faster boots and no systemd
>>
>>53736476
Yes, the entire concept of portage. People keep memeing about "muh 2% performance gains" for some reason, but that's not even close to why people use Gentoo. I can't stress enough just how fucking flexible the packaging system is while still being easy enough to use that you don't have to practically become a distro maintainer to actually use it.

Don't want systemd? Cool, just set -systemd in your global USE flags.

Want to use libressl instead of openssl? Set libressl in your global USE flags.

Need to write a patch to fix a bug or add custom functionality to a package without maintaining your own totally seperate package? OK, write the patch, drop it in /etc/portage/patches/${CATEGORY}/${PACKAGE_NAME} and then portage will apply the patch every time you install or update that package.

Don't want gtk3 support in Firefox?
echo www-client/firefox -gtk3 > /etc/portage/package.use/firefox
>>
>>53736677
>no systemd
Optionally. You can absolutely have systemd if you do real sysadmin work and you don't just pretend to care about the UNIX philosophy because some retard on /g/ told you systemd is bad once.

>>53740306
No, but it's not hard to install either. Just follow the installation manual. The standard way of installation is by using a stage3 anyway. If you go the Funtoo way, this also includes a precompiled debian kernel, so you don't have to fiddle with that either.

>>53740354
I've used Arch, but Funtoo is better in literally every way.
>>
>>53736410
for some large packages, firefox is one of them, there is a binary package available.

Why do I need an installation manual to install a desktop OS? I'm accustomed to the GUI providing enough information to guide me through the installation and leave as little room for human error as possible.

I think he just has slight asbergers. Distros are designed for certain kind of users. If you are interested in the process of compliling and configuring then gentoo is the one for you. He's trying to express that the point of having a guide and not a do-it-for-you installer is so that you can get an in-depth feel on how operating systems work.
It's not an exclusive club or something, its just a matter of using the right tool for the job.

Best desktop OS with MacOSX
Best server with OpenBSD or FreeBSD
Best NAS with FreeNAS
Best router/firewall with PFSense.

1/3 of peak internet traffic comes from a FreeBSD server. This is a testament to the superior IP stack in BSD's.

we're at least two different voidfags ITT.
But to be fair, i need Arch as a secondary system solely for the Androud compat-libs. At least until Android N.

>>53742667
I think so. Tough real men use ALSA with a good .asoundrc - wich may not be needed on void if you don't use a sound card (it's designed to work on a basic setup without conf file). My system would be mute on the sound card, but i took the .asoundrc over from Arch. Yes, i was an Arch user for almost 3 years.
>>
>>53742792
I don't think so. Pulse audio requires systemd which void doesn't have.

Void is the definition of hipster trash. Tries to stay away from GNUs C Compiler but the userland itself is GNU

Do you know what else void is void of? Major Desktop Environments like GNOME and KDE. Unless you don't run GNU/Linux there is no place for this hip distro(let)
