That shit takes up more space than just getting a really small m-itx desktop. Seriously you could use the same space that laptop is in and have all of the desktop shit in it's spot.

just started to do my research after my msi gaming laptop gpu seems to be fucked up. i can replace my gpu sice is mxm but that shit is retarded overpiced. i have an esate connector but can;t find anything about if i can connect a normal gpu to it also the main problem is the fucking power suply. do you really need a psu designed to power a main board, hdd, dvd blue ray or whatever other shit ppl get into their pcs, just to power a gpu? if somebody comes up with a smaller version i think i;ll go for it. if i can connect it to esata

You can't run a GPU over eSATA what the fuck are you talking about?

The only viable method before was over ExpressCard. Almost nothing uses that shit anymore. The future is going to be TB3 for external GPU. If you don't have either of those you have to replace the internal MXM part.

Recently made an eGPU setup, i'm on my phone so this shitty collage is the best I can give you. Using NVIDIA because if you mod the driver you can trick it into working with switchable graphics, and Optimud allows it to use the internal monitor.
In pic related I just ran the cable (HDMI that connects the M.2 port to an external PCI 16x slot) into a draw in my desk so it looks clean.
Would recomend using a modular PSU and don't use Lenovo unless you know how to remove the whitelist.
I've been able to run both Crysis 3 and The Division in medium - ultra at around 60fps on the internal monitor with no problems.
I did it coz i'm a student and need a laptop but didn't want to buy a seperate PC just for gaming. If you can afford both, or don't need a laptop, stick to PC's.

Yes familia, 2.0 x1 is just enough to handle Fallout 4 at medium-high settings and 2560x1080 resolution. The bus usage NEVER went higher than 45%, unless I used the GPU-z stress test. In that case it was 60%.
Also learn what native bandwidth compression in nvidia cards is, desu.

I've been waiting for a viable TB1 solution since I bought a laptop in 2012.

That never happened (unless you want to pay $500) and now things are moving to TB3.
>>
>>53734165
Ah nice. I'll have a X220 in my hands come an hour or two. Upgrading from an X61.
>>
>>53734503
Remember to disable throttling. x220 throttles like a bitch.
>>
>>53735369
Will do. Eradicating Winshit after I remove the whitelist and add the msata ssd and 16gb of ram I ordered with it. Also plan to disable the trackpad. Might even just unplug it for good when I'm in there installing the ssd.
>>
>>53735450
well, you can't disable throttling it without Windows.
Also why not just stick to Windows 7? You'll get much better battery life than under linux.
>>
>>53735487
I dislike Windows, and I already have it installed on my desktop. No need for Windows on a laptop, in my view. Last I read, throttling was not a problem under Linux on the X220.
>>
I have a Thinkpad X220. Never been interested in gaming but I would like to try Space Engine. How do external GPUs work? Where does one connect them?
>>
>>53735592
ExpressCard to pcie
>>
I just wish someone would made an Expresscard-based Thunderbolt adapter so I could use one of those mass produced eGPU enclosures with my ancient Thinkpad. I'd prefer to have the option of connecting my laptop to a GPU whenever I set it down on a desk rather than buying some fuckhueg retarded gaming laptop that has no use as a portable system.
>>
>>53735592
Answering myself. Found this image.
http://imgur.com/a/StGdd
What one needs is an Express Card adapter, then connect the GPU to that, and that's it. Might try it with some second hand graphics card, as I was not looking to upgrade my laptop any time soon.
>>
I tried making one just this weekend using an express card and an R9 280X. I managed to get the device spinning no problem, but it wouldn't output to any monitor I tried, though any method I tried. DVI and HDMI both didn't work, meaning I couldn't actually get to bios to see if things were working.

Anyone have any ideas?

>i have an esate connector but can;t find anything about if i can connect a normal gpu to it
Because you can't
>is the fucking power suply. do you really need a psu designed to power a main board, hdd, dvd blue ray or whatever
you need something to power the GPU an easy way is to use a regular one

some brands have USB-C TB3 enclosures with everything you need included + extra ports
>>
>>53733054
Do you know what your average FPS on gaymes were? Battlefield 3/4/Fallout 4?

Looks sexci, but I can see why you sold it.
>>
>>53735888
fallout 4 - average of 50FPS. Could be 60 but I decided to not lower the settings.
BF3 is a constant 60FPS. Never tried BF4.
>>
>>53735852
If your GPU doesn't require more power than the one taking directly from PCIe slot you can just use a standard 12V laptop PSU. That's why GTX750Ti/GTX950 are the best choices for eGPU.
>>
>>53735643
I just did a little googling and it seems express card run at PCIe 1.0 speeds.

So just to be clear, if I hook up my laptop to a gtx 980 ti, I wouldn't get the same performance as if it was in my mobo, right?
>>
>>53736429
Express card can be either PCIe 1.0 or 2.0. All Sandy Bridge CPUs and newer laptops have Express Card 2.0 port.
>>
good thing is, eGPU is now an official thing that is natively supported with thunderbolt 3. Razer and asus I think have egpu cases for tb3 around.
>>
How can I check if I have expresscard 1.0 or 2.0? I have a Thinkpad X201T, only ifno I could find is that it's 54mm. Also, how much power can such a port supply? Is it enough for GTX950?
>>
>>53736864
That's great, but almost nobody has TB3.
>>

The last good Thinkpad Tablet was X220T, which has Sandy. I might get that this year.
>>
>>53737008
Soon anon.. soon. Most new laptops have it now cuz intel now completely owns tb license and prices are lowered.
>>
>>53737042
The last good ThinkPad Tablet is x230t. You don't even use the additional keys available in old shitty thinkpad keyboards, and the backlight is a very nice feature in x230t.
>>
>>53737068
x230t has that new keyboard. It looks worse and I've heard it's shit. Also, is it much upgrade from X220t, considering it has ivy?
>>
>>53737062
>new ~12in ThinkPad
>soldered RAM, soldered battery
>drop hinges
>that garbage keyboard that replaced the godlike one
>flex flex flex

Calling it now.

Yes, I'm mad.
>>
>>53737096
It's not shit. It's much better than x220t's one. Keys are bigger and nicer in touch.
Ivy is 22nm, including the iGPU. iGPU performance in about 2 times better than HD3000 found in x220, and the CPU is much cooler. x230/x230t doesn't overheat and throttle as x220/x220t does, also you got much better battery life, ESPECIALLY considering the only 6cell battery option in x230t.
Don't be such a fa/g/got and get x230t. At least the IB CPU won't be a bottleneck in eGPU gayming.
>>
>>53737168
also, forget about 1866/2133MHz RAM in x220. IB is the first one to support higher frequencies than 1600MHz. This really matters when you play gaymes on iGPU.
>>
>>53737168
Where can I get info on available CPU options for X230T? Thinkwiki has only a page for X230.
>>
>>53737261
Same as x230.
http://thinkwiki.de/X230

Obviously get the i7 version. 1MB of additional L2 cache helps a lot when using iGPU and eGPU.
>>
>>53737324
I can't find i7 versions in my country. The i5 ones have the same options, only a bit lower default clock and 1MB lower cache.
>>
>>53737375
and lower iGPU frequency, also locked XTU settings.
Well, in that case get i5-3320m vesrion. It's still better than the Sandy Bridge i7 unit.
>>

>>
>>53737657

so let me get this straight (sorry im a retard)
i plug in the 950 to the pcie card and then the expresscard adapter to the laptop and then install newest drivers , is that it?
>>
>>53737912
the gtx 950 DOES need an external power supply the 750/750ti do not
>>
>>53737912
Yes.
>>
>>53737934
>>53737912
My bad, GTX950 (even the smallest version from MSI) requires 6pin PSU connector. Forget it.
750/750Ti from MSI doesn't have this 6pin port, so you can power it up entirely from a 12V laptop brick power supply.
>>
>>53737986
That card pulls 55W, so the power brick might not work alone.
>>
>>53738104
My GTX750 >>53733054 with 1.35GHz OC (from stock 1GHz) was rated at 90W. The power brick I used was 12V 10A, so that's 120W. PE4L v2.1b is in theory a PCIe 3.0 complaint device, so you can pull that much power from the PCIe slot directly.
So yes, the laptop's power brick will be just fine. No need to use autistic ATX PSUs.
>>
>>53738149
No need to use an ATX PSU, but you need a powerful brick. My original Lenovo one is 65W, for example.

The idea behind it is having a portable machine that's completely usable without the external gpu though, isn't it?
I do like the concept since I have to switch between my laptop and workstation all day anyway, having something that can do both would be pretty cool.
