In any case, I'm prepared to believe the article, though there are probably a few possible explanations. I imagine if you're a woman and you want to get into an industry that is mostly men, you'd have to be pretty sure that software development is actually what you want to do, whereas I bet there are a lot of dogshit awful programmers out there who don't know the first thing about software development, but feel they should do it anyway because they're a nerdy male who likes computers (even if they mostly use computers for video games.)
Also, if the only difference between male and female coders was that there was more variation among male programmers, you'd still see that result. You only have to meet a certain (hypothetical) bar to get a pull request accepted. It doesn't matter how far over that bar you got, but a slightly higher percentage of males hitting way under that bar would not surprise me.
