i did this. I bought the M-Audio AV 30 speakers. Turns out there is an well documented issue where they have a heat issue that causes constant low level static.

The point of a subwoofer is not to add more bass volume (though they CAN be used for this), it's to provide bass extension, so you can hear lower bass frequencies. If you set the sub volume correctly, you won't have more or less bass. Just deeper bass.

There's more than money issues when it comes to subwoofers. Depending on room arrangement there may not be a good place to set one at all.
