I already use custom new tab for a custom new tab page, but the url gets selected in the address bar everytime a new tab gets opened and that looks ugly with my settings.

cmwm is what I use. It's a basic floating manager with no window decorations or anything. Very minimal. If you want window decorations get openbox, fluxbox or pekwm. If you want tiling i3 is good for beginners, but if you're going to just use it in floating mode anyway get one of the above.
